I had to laugh at all the people in the HighT thread saying Jones wasn't worth it - after a season where he injured his hip and was a surprise to even play.

Will some posters ever get perspective on anything?

Awesome. Two excellent young players. Hopefully we can get them both longterm!

Haven't you heard? You either are an all-pro defensive end or you suck. Atleast that's what I've gathered from many posters here. People seem to believe that $7.9M is top end all-pro money. When it would actually be the 14th highest defensive end contract if you look at it as a one year contract and compare the yearly average.

I don't think that Chandler Jones is an elite DE. But $8M isn't really close to elite end money either. He's definitely worth $8M/Y in my opinion. Easily our best end.

There were people who thought his option wouldn't/shouldn't be picked up? Wow, that's insane.

I am happy to hear this.

For the reason you cite, it wasn't that unrealistic to argue Jones not being worthy of $7.5m. With Sheard on board, you had to wonder what the team's mindset was.

Their mindset was probably that Jones is a lot better.

The NFL live feed is really surrealistic. They have 2 no name announcers with glasses in some booth that look like 195os game show hosts, another room with a cute blond and a guy that must have throat cancer, I mean he's painful to listen to. They have some dude with the "fans" with a feed so bad it freezes every time he moves and some chick who is a "social media" expert who is actually counting how many tweets there are.

Ya know, it's a real shame we had to win the Super Bowl.......

It totally ruins draft night.

Good news

Thanks

Back to the draft

Pretty sure most were saying that he wasn't worth an elite defensive end contract

Which is asinine of them to even think anyone is suggesting the Pats should sign him to an elite DE contract. But people complaining about his production really should go look at some other top end DEs thru their first 3 year his production is not that far off.

Justin Houston's first 3 years for example
5.5
10
11
26.5 sacks thru 43 games

then he had his huge breakout season

Chandler
6
11.5
6
23.5 sacks thru 40 games

But there were some people that suggested that Jones isn't worth the money he'll get if he plays 2016 under the option.

Which then if Jones goes out and balls this year and puts up a 15-17 sack season and BB didn't pick up his 5th season, BB then has to either give him a big contract, franchise him or let him go which then people are cursing BB for being stupid and not picking up the 5th year.

The stats for the first three years show similarity in their first three seasons but do nothing to project that Jones will have a breakout season in year four or even that he will improve. Johnny Manziel barely played his rookie year...does that mean he will win a Super Boel in year two, like Tom Brady, who also was a backup in his first year? Extreme example, acknowledged, but similar reasoning. Most players with Jones' stats through three years will continue at that level in year four and beyond, unless you can show that most pass rushers peak after three years, but I don't think that's the case. Houston is not the norm.

I'm not dogging Jones. I'm just looking at him for what he is right now. I think it was probably the right move to pick up the option, but I think there is a reasonable argument both ways. Good, not great player, and now the salary borders somewhere between good and great.

I do agree with you, though, that I expect Jones to produce better based on the eye test; but I won't be surprised if he plateaus either.

Good Belichickian move.. we are continuing to get younger and faster.

They need to take care of Gostowski soon, and wrap him up long term..
