The NFL is Now ACTIVELY Trolling the New England Patriots

Like some other posters, I'm leaning toward this quote coming from someone within the Jets or a being made up completely. Why would anyone in the league office care about a positive attitude at Jets HQ? It's 2 days before the draft, every team should be positive.

With that said, I'm at the point where it would not take much for me to believe someone at the NFL office would think it would be funny to take a shot at the Patriots while punishing another team.

Or in other words, we don't have to have "smoked something" just because we are on opposite ends of the pessimism-optimism deflategate spectrum.

I don't necessary think we're on total opposite ends, but no--I can't say that I am waiting to wake up tomorrow to find out that the league has suddenly turned on itself, apologized to the Patriots, taken the focus away from the deflation/pressure issue, and decided to punish our rival teams and individuals instead.

Personally, I will be happy with the report stating that there's no proof of tampering, considering who we're dealing with here. Any other scenario seems a bit too fantastical, but that's just my opinion which may be very incorrect. I think our difference in opinion lies in the level of skepticism that I feel, which is primarily based on past results/events.

Like I said, I'm just hoping that there's no proof of the crime in which they were accused. If the entire NFL, as we know it, is turned completely upside down, that will be a major bonus.

Why not? The POTUS just got a shot in as well!

D'ya still think there is an even playing field for the New England Patriots in Goodell's NFL?

OK, THIS is just the NFL publicly giving New England the middle finger:

"The Jets shouldn't be too deflated over the decision," a league source said. "It won't change the positive air around the team."

How can anyone claim this is not a crooked playing field?

.

Assuming it's an accurate quote, the lack of professionalism from "a league source" is astonishing. Even if he said "this is not for attribution," he put a quotable quote out there. If he said this is on background, and just used irresistible language (by Mehta's standards,) well, that's on Mehta I guess.

However this made it "out there" - and there's always the possibility that it's just made up - the whole deflategate thing is not yet wound down, and this quote makes it look as if the league has an interest in the outcome (i.e., has taken a side.)

Of course, the NFL does not have to look like it's even-handed, but that calls into question Wells' marching orders... but once again, only to Pats fans. The fans of 31 other teams are giddy to read this... fans of the JEST being at the top of the list.

I'd urge that Kraft take with him any other disgruntled owners and walk out of the league, if it weren't un-doable from a business standpoint... and if it weren't so satisfying to see the Pats kick the **** out of the rest of the league on the field.

.....and of course, the Globe's Benjy loves it:

Lol. Great uses of "deflated" and "positive air." https://twitter.com/MMehtaNYDN/status/593381247369519104…

Exactly - - when the league, which is responsible for adjudication and discipline, publicly TROLLS the team that it is judging, then there is an unacceptable situation.

How about if, during AH's trial, the judge cracked jokes about Hernandez' home security system to the Boston Globe?

I usually don't pile on the journalists too hard in Boston, but Volin doesn't even try to at least pretend like he likes the team. What a douche.

I don't want him to LIKE the team. If I want rah-rah, I'll come here (most of the time).

I just want the reporter to not have an agenda AGAINST the team.

Benjy is not very good, and he suffers greatly in comparison to his predecessor. Plus, he obviously wants to be back in Florida.

Can't say I blame him for the bolded. There's a reason people want to come here to die.

That would seem to make sense, but here's the problem. All the people who benefit the most from Goodell's reign of terror, are Bob Kreaft's fellow owners. Remember as long as the Pats reign supreme THEY are the ones who have to face angry fans who are demanding that THEY produce similar types of excellence.

Jerry Jones might seem to be a likely partner for Kraft, but Cowboy fans have to be wondering what's happened the last decade, and again, the Pats are an ugly constant reminder of what it used to be like for Cowboy fans. So seeing the Pats brought back to the pack would be a huge relief for Jetty.

The NFL is a an entity that HATES anomalies, and the Patriots have been an anomaly for close to a decade now, and they would like to stamp it out. So while I am sure there are several owners who will gladly commiserate with Kraft, there aren't going to be many if any, who will help him fight this injustice

I believe a reporter can like the team, want it to win, and still be credibly objective when it comes to critical reporting/analysis. A couple in our own backyard are Reiss and Jerry Thornton. This fashionable shtick of reporters proclaiming "I am not a fan" and playing negative contrarian to prove their "integrity" is nonsense.

Revis' ring stopped meaning anything to anyone other than himself the day he signed with the Jet. I don't care about him or his current team

This farce that the "league office" meted out just solidifies my belief that the Pats and their fans are not out to get them, because THEY ARE!. There hadn't been a more text book case of tampering in years. It was about a HOF level player and the stakes couldn't have been higher. Yet the league felt comfortable to acknowledge that tampering occurred, yet deemed that an embarrassing small fine be imposed. If Bob Kraft looks at this and doesn't see a GIANT F**K You being thrown at him, then he isn't a tenth as smart as I thought.

Roger Goodell and his minions have told Kraft without any ambiguity that they are out to get them. They also gave fair warning as to what to expect from Welles report. While I doubt very much there will be any consequence from it, there won't be any satisfaction either. The report is sure to be ambiguous enough that NONE of the stain that tarnished the Pats will be wiped clean. Instead there will be another opportunity for the league, its minions at ESPN, and the usual haters to spew even more slander on our team.

When is Bob going to get it. THE LEAGUE want to take the Pats down. Their continuing consistent success is a threat to their mediocrity. The longer the Pats can maintain their run, the more difficult it will be for these less inspired owners to justify their own mediocrity to an increasingly demanding fan base. They aren't Bob Kraft's friends or partners. They are his competitors and HE is the guy they need to knock off.

Every time I see the potential for something good to be happening for the Pats lie this tampering charge or good rumors coming out of the Wells report, I get disappointed and I'm, shown once again that I'm not just another overly sensitive Pats fan. With today's actions the League just told the Pats as well as the other 31 teams they compete against, that their players are open season for any and all of them, regardless of what their contract status is. AND if Kraft doesn't get equally down and dirty they will just allowing them to win.

This is no bright side to this

It would really suck if the Patriots went on to win SB50....I'd hate that. Then I'd have to continue to wear my Patriots gear whenever I'm on the road traveling. Two weeks ago, I had on my SBXLIX hat and long-sleeve T-shirt in Chicago. No one gave me a hard time and I didn't notice any angry looks.

But in 2 weeks, I head to Baltimore and I'll wear the same gear....thankfully I'll land in BWI and head north!

If Goodell doesn't resign as commissioner and actually shows up for the NFL opening day at Foxboro next season, can we please make it "free rotting fruits and vegetables" day for all those in attendance.

It wouldn't be too bright for Goodell to come to Foxboro....but he is that stupid.

The more I think about it, the more I think Mehta is making up the quote. I said originally that there are enough Patriots haters in the League office who might say it. But with the growing sentiment in the media that the Wells report is going to look worse for the League than anyone with their actions being investigated, I am thinking no one in the League office is making Deflategate jokes right now.

Tom Curran and Chris Gasper are pretty good. Marc Bertrand isn't a reporter but he actually likes the Patriots and now openly trashes Felger and Mazz on his show with Zolak.

"A league source" could be basically anyone working in anyway in the NFL. It could be a janitor. Or just a Jets employee, which is most likely.

It could also just simply be total ******** from Mehta as an extra FU to the Pats, since he can just say that he can't reveal his source.

Agreed on Curran. I don't care much for Gasper. He follows whichever way the wind blows and fancies himself as a "media personality."

Shoot--I think we'd all be very happy with just being found innocent, let alone an apology and seeing other people fired. I'd take that any day of the week.

Exactly this!

I'm just hoping that they come out and unequivocally state that the Patriots did nothing wrong... but for some reason I just have this sinking feeling that Roger GoToHell is just going to phrase it in a way where people can just slam us endlessly about it..

something along the lines of suggesting that they couldn't find "sufficient" evidence of tampering would be enough for the mediots and haters to run wild
