Would you roll the dice on Justin Blackmon ?

The Patriots have a history of rolling the dice on high risk and high reward players.

Rotoworld is reporting that the Jags have moved on from Justin Blackmon who needs to apply for reinstatement after missing 2014.

http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/7402/justin-blackmon

Reports have Blackmon spending a lot of time in rehab and if reports are correct he should qualify for reinstatement.

Blackmon is a former top 5 pick who has a ton of talent and nobody has ever questioned his on field commitment. He has been called a jerk off the field, but didn't Corey Dillon & Randy Moss also have questionable pasts?

If Belichick was willing to roll the dice on Albert Haynesworth, why wouldn't he give Blackmon a shot, if the price was right?

First you have to ask Contra if he's seen him in the bars lately.

I would if it was for a 6th round pick and if there was a to make his cap hit very minimal.

Given this Hernandez bs I'd be surprised if the team took a risk on a dude who could DUI into a bus packed with small school children any time soon. Figure it will be at least 3 years before we go back into the reclamation project business.

The Patriots made a contract offer to Rolando McCLain. If they think they're strong enough that they can handle his issues, they should be able to handle a (hopefully former) drunk.

He had a solid rookie year and was looking like a stud to start 2013.

He's on the last year of his deal though, right? That really ruins the appeal in him. If he had a breakout season with us then he would cost a fortune in 2016.

With his history even a break out season isn't going to cause anyone to break the bank for him. He'd likely still get a short term "prove it some more" deal.

So if we think he is likely to have that break out year is he worth a 6th or 7th for that one year? Maybe, especially since we could recoup the pick as a comp pick if he has a great year.

If he's on the last year of his contract and is currently under suspension, what possible trade value could he have? If the Jags release him, if he's clean, and if he is reinstated, then sure why not give him shot?

I don't think his last season counted on his contract, so he's still got 2 years left.

I would assuming the cost is low, both in dollars and in any potential compensation to Jacksonville. Why not?

They're not counting on him, but they haven't necessarily moved on. The GM said that they "Plan to go without him, but if he emerges, he's going to go in with the top guys and compete." The Jags have stuck with him this long, if he's sober and had his head on straight why wold they give him away?

From the Rotoworld stuff on the side in the OP link:

The Florida Times Union's Ryan O'Halloran believes Justin Blackmon is "done-zo" with the Jaguars.
O'Halloran made the comment in a chat, so he was merely speaking his opinion. The Jaguars' higher-ups have backed Blackmon to a certain degree and said nice things about the former No. 5 overall pick, but by the way the team has approached free agency and the draft over the past year, they appear set to move on. O'Halloran believes Amari Cooper will be in play at No. 3 overall. Apr 24 - 10:35 AM

I'm not so sure someone would ever break the bank on him, especially so soon. He's shown a repeated pattern of horrible decisions, so what would he be capable of if you handed him a guaranteed signing bonus of like 20+ million dollars?

My guess is the same night he signed the contract he would be out at da club, popping $150 bottles of crystal in the VIP section

That being said, he's not a violent criminal, he's just a young kid who appears to be an addict and has made steps to try and get his life on track. I'd take a chance on him for a 6th and/or 7th rounder.. if he produces at a high level for 1 year, you win.. if he doesn't and he screws up again, then the risk was minimal and you move on.

TMI Alert: His talent in this offense would get me aroused in all sorts of ways!

Nope. Not for a good long time. Last time was at an Irish pub in Jax Beach called the Shim Sham Room about 2 years ago and, even then, he seemed somewhat sober.

You know my thoughts on the WR position. If Blackmon's sober and willing to make some assurances, I'd be all over the idea of the Patriots making a move for him.

I actually told him that night that he should look for ways to get to New England to let Brady make him into a Hall of Famer. He laughed and said "that's what's up".

That is a true statement. A lot of contract language and a peepee cup every day would work. Dude has more skills than any WR we have had since Moss. Will he ever use them.
