Could we be Getting Ready to Trade Up?

As others have said, one week to Draft Day, this thread is right on schedule.

Belichick seems to like having a lot of picks and using them rather than trading a couple to move up. His logic seems to be that, since anybody you draft, whether in the first or sixth round, could turn out to be great or a complete bust, the more you pick, the better your odds.

I guess there could be an exception to that if the Pats had a crappy season and were already in the top ten and there were a once in a generation talent like J J Watt on the board or they needed a QB and there was consensus on one of the top candidates. But, I don't see that happening anytime soon.

Or they could just let time run out and get the first and last pick of round 2. I think they lose the 5th year option doing that tho.
Wouldn't that make pick #32 more valuable in trading down to a team given the 5th year option versus 4 on the contract???

Trade up for Danny Shelton please
Would you give a 1st and 2nd for Shelton? It would likely cost more than that.

I doubt Belichick gathers up draft picks with the intent to trade up. He plans to draft in bulk. He'll trade up if he really wants someone, but I don't see that as part of his plan when he trades for picks way before the draft.

Shane Ray is going to fall because of his toe. Will he fall to 32? I don't know. Would the Pats b interested? I don't know enough the player n ask those who do

There's so much value in rounds 2/3/4 that I would prefer the Patriots parlayed pick 32 into lower round picks or even a first next year.

Yea perfect year to trade your first this year for someone elses next year if someone is desperate enough.. literally worst case you get the same #32 the next year and have two 1sts to select or trade

If he gets past the Bears, Shelton could have a pretty long fall. I expect BB has at least looked into this idea.

As has been stated before, even by BB I believe, he doesn't know what he is going to do until his pick starts getting close. Nobody has any idea what is going down after the first few picks of the draft. Sure would be nice to have pics of all the other team's draft boards to see who stacks up where.

Hmmm.....Draftgate !! :D

I could see us swinging a deal with Detroit at 23 if they want to recuperate the 4th round pick they sent for Ngata. Pick 32, 96, and a 6th or 7th should get us their (similar to the deal we made to get Daniel Graham).

Trae Waynes (assuming he slides down that far) or Marcus Peters would be the likely targets, IMO.

if it was for Herschel Walker, I'm all in.

Who are we kidding. I like your premise, but BB doesn't play that game. If you invert your thesis, but maintain your concept, it makes no sense.

If we need few spots, it makes sense to have more players and the winner gets the spot and the rest get dumped or PS. While an elite player can make all the difference and you won't get that elite player. Putting all your eggs in one basket isn't BB's way. if the player is a bust, you have nothing.

BB's economic approach will get you a B rating who might be coached up or fill a niche and give you a B+.

Belichick has traded up as often as he has traded down. Trading our 96 is indeed something Belichick would do if he wanted the player enough. We would still have picks at 64, 97, 101 and 130.

If people are going to make this argument, they should probably acknowledge the obvious when doing so:

  1. Part of that is because of the team's OL philosophy of not generally taking IOL in early rounds, and relying on the QB to deal with middle pressure
  2. Part of that is because BB has been neglecting the 'O' in order to fix the 'D' (6 of last 7 1st round picks, 9 of last 14 2nd round picks, and 5 of the last 10 3rd round picks (so 20 of 31) have been on defense), and counting on TFB to make it work.
  3. Part of that is because the team missed on so many picks in the 2nd and 3rd round during the rebuild, especially from 2006-2009, which has forced the team to play 'catch up' on that defense, and re-draft positions.

Take Brady out of the equation, and see where that method gets you.

I concur. It is sobering to realize that there is only a single first Round player on the entire Offense. That is why I suspect that BB will make this an almost pure offensive draft. I expect two premium O-line picks and a couple of RBs too. I think there is little need for a WR given the TEs on the roster and the depth of the good but not great WRs.

The AFCE is becoming a good Defense division throughout, and BB needs Offensive talent to counter.

Or you could argue the offenses on all the team's have improved as well.
So I would argue last we need is Buff putting up 30 points in the air along with a vicious D.
I would argue Tom can always make a play.
We need defense to stop Cassell, Tannenhill from looking like Kelly and Marino.
So I say Edge Rusher or Dback number 1 if we do go offense it has to be Gurley. Unless we do something crazy and trade up for Amari Cooper.
If you twisted my arm today I would say Defensive back.

Didn't they trade up for either Hightower or Jones?

You're spot on. They traded up twice in the first round that year (2012), for both players.

As far as the OP's question goes, I think it's impossible to answer without knowing who will still be remaining on the board. Belichick has proven that he's not afraid to trade up or down.
