2015 Patriots Draft Contacts

From Tony Pauline

New England Patriots worked out BJ McBryde/DL/UConn last week. Team is looking at a lot of late round/PFA type defensive linemen.

3rd UConn player we've looked at.

He's an interesting athlete:

6'5", 292

5.05
31.5" vert
10'3" bj
7.22 3cone

Haven't watched him though.

According to Mike Loyko:

Talked to one scout last week who told me #Patriots worked out by far the most players prior to the draft. Upwards of 350 players he thinks

350! Makes my list a little paltry.

The New England Patriots have held a workout with former Notre Dame and Florida defensive back Cody Riggs, according to Ross Jones of FOXSports.com

Riggs spent his four collegiate seasons at Florida, but finished up his eligibility in South Bend last fall.

While with the Gators, the 5-foot-9, 185-pound free safety appeared in 40 games from 2010 through 2013, totaling 107 tackles, nine tackles for loss, two sacks, nine pass deflections, one interception and one forced fumble. But the fifth-year senior moved on to South Bend as a graduate student in 2014, and played cornerback in 11 contests to collect 36 tackles, one tackle for loss, three pass breakups, one interception along with one forced fumble.

Griggs was not invited to the NFL Scouting Combine in February, yet recorded a 40-yard dash between 4.41 and 4.46 seconds, as well as a 33-inch vertical and a 115-inch broad jump at his Notre Dame pro day.

Seen as an undersized but intelligent defender, Riggs is projected as a potential late-round pick or priority free agent in the 2015 NFL draft later this month.

Navy long snapper Joe Cardona worked out for the Patriots, per @RavensInsider.

Seems apparent that the Pats are looking at LS's this year.

I'm sure Ryan Allen is happy too.

That's really interesting.
In past years, there were generally ~25 reported of the 30 official visits. It's usually been a good indicator of which positions the Patriots will target, and a pool of players they will try to select.

This year around 12-13 have been reported.
Wonder if that is a conscious effort by the Patriots to players and agents, requesting that they keep these visits confidential.

Florida LB Neiron Ball visited Patriots, Buccaneers, Broncos, Texans; workouts Falcons, Rams, Steelers, Cardinals

STRENGTHS
Good athlete with adequate play strength for his size. Willing to take on lead blockers and play physically against the run. Plays with toughness. Played outside 'backer in a 3-4 and 4-3 and took reps at inside 'backer. Stays square to line of scrimmage, using controlled footwork to slide along line of scrimmage. Has ability to cover man to man. Doesn't quit on a play. Will continue bird-dogging a play until whistle sounds. Has speed to close out on perimeter and uses same burst as decent pass rusher. Can cover kicks and punts. Mentally tough and has overcome difficult circumstances in his life.
WEAKNESSES
The microfracture surgery he underwent in mid-November is a substantial concern. Slow with his eyes. Gets off of playaction and into coverage slower than desired. Inconsistent with diagnosing quickly and attacking. Looks like a thinker rather than reactor when playing inside. Angular linebacker who could use more bend and leverage in his game. Had brain surgery in 2011 after being diagnosed with rare, hereditary condition.
BOTTOM LINE
Versatile linebacker with good play speed and a motor that teams look for. While Ball's play clearly improved from 2013 to 2014, his physical issues will be tough to overcome by draft day. He overcame losing both of his parents before the age of 10 as well as brain surgery in 2011, so he's no stranger to adversity and perseverance. Ball might have to attempt to beat the odds once again and make a roster via the undrafted-free-agent route.

Sounds like an ideal Pats UDFA. Seems like there's some upside to him.

Interesting story too:

Central Florida offensive lineman Torrian Wilson

Central Florida left tackle Torrian Wilson had a private workout for the New England Patriots and participated in the Miami Dolphins’ local prospect day.

Wilson worked out for retired Patriots offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia.

“It was great, their offensive line coach and scout came down and saw me and we did drills and board work,” Wilson said in a telephone interview. “He added a little twist to it and taught me their plays and put up about five plays and I had to memorize the calls and what exactly each and every offensive lineman has to do on each play. We talked for a while and he asked me if I would like to visit New England.

You've met and spoken with a lot of teams. Who would you say has shown the most interest in you?

"I'd say Detroit, the Patriots and the Dolphins."

I understand the defending champs sent a special executive to check you out.

"Yes with the Patriots. I had film work with coach Belichick. I sat down and watched film with him. He had me watching film and going over our whole scheme. He wanted to see if I could handle different calls and changes in a quick second. Could I switch up the calls and think on the go. I also met with the Patriots. I met with the Dolphins O-line coach and sat down and did more work with them."

That must have been a memorable experience to go through tape with coach Belichick.

"Yeah, it was. He's an easy-going guy - surprisingly. A lot of people have said that he's hard nosed and has that edge on him, but he was easy-going and relaxed."

UCF redshirt senior LT Torrian Wilson is moving inside to OG for his senior season, according to CBS Sports' Dane Brugler.

"Good to see UCF OL Torrian Wilson is moving inside to OG as a senior. Was going to happen eventually, struggling at LT on 2013 tape," Brugler tweeted. Some evaluators think the 6-feet-4, 308-pound Wilson projects more as a guard at the next level

Oklahoma cornerback Julian Wilson

Oklahoma cornerback Julian Wilson has prototypical size and speed for an NFL defensive back.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound cornerback has 32 3/8 arms, 9 1/4 hands and ran the 40-yard dash in 4.47 seconds at his campus Pro Day workout and bench pressed 225 pounds 15 times. At the NFL scouting combine, Wilson ran a 4.58 and had a 36-inch vertical leap.

Wilson has worked out for the Philadelphia Eagles, New England Patriots and the Atlanta Falcons.

Probably a 6-7th/UDFA option.
