New England Patriots – Mock Draft 5.0 The Defense Never Rests

Steve Balestrieri

Peters is an intimidator and his physical play and athleticism stand out. He has excellent play recognition, having the innate ability to know when to turn around while the ball is in the air to knock it away or intercept it.

Would Nick Marshall even be getting considered if he wasn't the auburn QB? Has he really shown anything at CB?

All set, just fixed the feed so it should be fine moving forward.

Ian, Good Draft.
Some tweaks? I had D linemen Marcus Hardison in Round 3 and Xavier Williams (late). Would love CB Marcus Peters but I think he is gone. If he is there you grab him.

Two picks I am not interested in (my opinion) are RB Ajayi and WR Coates.

1)Do we sacrifice a high pick on a RB? I think we have depth there in the way BB values RBs. You have Gaffney and the "red shirted" White on the roster.

2)Coates can't run patterns and his hands are suspect. He is Chad Jackson II, is he not?

Rather than reach for a kid like Nick Marshall (although I like the idea), I had Michigan St. CB/WR Tony Lippett (Notice CB). He has that Troy Brown versatility and at 6'2" with great ball skills he already has some solid CB experience, he can also be a fifth WR on game day. Lippett even had a better 3 cone than Coates.

As far as a WR project (which is what Coates would be and #97 is too early for a project) I would rather have Tyrell Williams Western Oregon at 6'4" 210lb (taller than Coates who looks to have better hands, equivalent speed and actually blocks) a little later.

So pick #97 I might suggest CB Tony Lippett, #219 I would have WR Tyrell Williams AND instead of RB at #96 I go Ali Marpet G if we miss out on Jackson. That leave us the #2 slot.#64.........

Shockeroo. I give up my #2 to Cleveland for RFA S Tashaun Gibson with a second round tender, who after Richard Sherman owns the most prolific Int numbers in the league at 11 and is only 24 years old. We then have the best S tandem in the NFL which helps our CB situation. McCourty is the organizer, not the playmaker Gibson is. His tender is only $2.3 mm. Would Cleveland match with so many holes? I don't know. You might have to sweeten the offer (as in Wes Welker tender offer to the Dolphins).

Is there a better player on the Draft Board at #64 than Gibson? He is an upgrade on Chung and Harmon, but now with Teams using three Safeties in alignments, it is a luxury for Matt P. He can play McCourty, Gibson and Chung the same time.

Thoughts?

Played it at the Senior Bowl and looked pretty good. Certainly good enough to be considered for a position change.

32 and 64 seem very possible. One would think Peters drops because of off-field issues. If he doesn't, I also like Byron Jones or Kevin Johnson there. Tre Jackson fits a need. Scar has been checking the FSU guys out.

Ajayi and Coates at 96 and 97 is very unrealistic. CBS has Ajayi at 42 and Coates at 59. Both will be long gone by 96. They have 10 rb's 93 or higher. Mike Davis at 107 and that seems more plausible. They have 15 wr's 92 or higher. Not sure that's a good spot for a wr if that many are taken.

I love Hardison at 101 though. And, the Nick Marshall pick later.

Most of those picks seem somewhat unrealistic for their draft position picked.

I have retired from mock drafts ... always an exercise in futility for me ... o_Oo_Oo_O

as for this mock draft ... I like it.

Very nice mock! The peters pick is gold. Best tape of all the cb's in this draft. Instincts, timing, anticipation. Everything bb needs to continue in press man.

The last pick is a guy I like. A guy truly maximizing every ounce of his natural ability. He is all guts and desire. Heart if a lion.
