@AroundTheNFL: Bill Belichick: Backup QB Jimmy Garoppolo 'looks like a linebacker'

http://t.co/VOx1ign7Z9. http://t.co/GNlFsRbiiR

In his first season, Garoppolo showed some promise in his few opportunities. According to Garoppolo's personal quarterback coach Jeff Christensen, the signal-caller is ready to attack his second year.

"I talked to Bill (Belichick) at the combine, and I asked him how Jimmy was doing," Christensen told WEEI.com in a recent phone conversation. "He said '(Jimmy) looks like a linebacker. He works out like a linebacker. He acts like a linebacker. I really like him a lot, coach. You did a great job with him. Thank you.' "

What is this saying, is he trying to get bigger?

Cousins,
Josh can line him up in the backfield with Tom as a blocking back. That way we'd have Tommy Boy, Aladdin AND The Squirrel as potential passers! They could play keep away from onrushing defenders until someone gets exasperated, leaves their man, then WHAM! TD pass! Epic!

I predict this innovative offense will be outlawed in the 2016 (non) competition meeting.

LOL I think it's more that Jimmy is beefing up to take hits maybe develop some more zing on his passes.
The future looks bright and no way if they feel he's the heir to the throne they would trade him away.
This kid has a lot of skill what we don't know is if he has the fire Tom has and thats what I want from my next QB.
If he doesn't have the fire we haven't got our guy.

Given that the Combine was only a few weeks after the Super Bowl, I don't think it is a comment on what Garropolo has done in the offseason, but what he was like last year.

If you remember, TB's 2d year (IIRC) he won some workout award for coming back with most muscle mass added or something like that. ( definitely was a parking space involved) I think it is typical that college QBs who are doing other things ( like trying to graduate) don't have the time or the resources to be in the physical condition they need to be to take the pounding of the NFL.

I take this as a signal of 'walking in the GOAT's footsteps'. He is doing what he needs to to be successful in NFL and is taking the coaching-advice and ACTING ON IT.

Be funny-ironic if we end up with a qb controversy by sep 2016. Although TB normally doesn't need anyone to push him, even so it might be good to have him challenged a little during practice week.

We go from

2 TE offense to 2 RB (RB & FB) to 2 QB offense. Sounds legit. Bring on 19-0

Well...except he was already pretty much built like a linebacker. Wheras Tom was, well....

That.

Why do people assume Ali G will be watching from the sidelines, or replacing Brady, with nothing in-between?

It takes any WR a year to learn the the Patriots playbook, and being a quarterback won't be any easier. If we find out that Ali G used the 1.5 years to learn the offensive playbook and get stronger than any other QB in the NFL, he'll be used on the field along with Brady and Squirrel.

Which other coaches are as inventive, successful, and tenured as McDaniels and Belichick? They are the best at trying new things based on the personnel.

I predict we'll draft a quarterback, if a smart one falls to us. It won't be a slight against Ali G or Brady -- just a natural progression of starting Ali G in some interesting role and developing the next guy to start or trade.

Seriously, when you have a GOAT quarterback like Brady, you're doing a disservice to the NFL not to have another young guy developing behind him. Especially so if Ali G is developing quickly and wants to participate as a starter on the offense like Squirrel, rather than taking a spot on the bench.

Brady isn't leaving the field.

Brady added muscle mass once he became an NFL QB. Jimmy G is doing the same.

Maybe JAG has figured out that the only way he will ever see the field is by playing linebacker.

Maybe he wants to play on special teams (a request not likely to be approved)
Joe Theissman was buried on the depth chart and started out returning punts for Washington....

As manx said, Jimmy G was already 6'2 226 at the 2014 combine.

For comparison, Tebow was 6'3 236 and Winston was 6'3 231. Any more weight and Jimmy G will be a tank. That's why this news was interesting to me.

Not too much of a surprise, considering he played as a linebacker in high school

I see Garoppolo plans to give Luck a run for his money as the hardest tackling QB.
