One of the more exhuasting positions I have done and I still feel it might be a little incomplete as I am just running out of time to watch all these guys. I feel good about it though and hope you guys do to. Let me know if there are any glaring omits or anything. I hope you are all enjoying this excercise I am doing and I want to get through all the positions by the end of next week so I can put my vertical board out before the draft.

Great post, I enjoy reading your site as well on a regular basis.... it's very informative. and a must read for any Pat fan!!!!

Agholar, Lockett, Mcbride and Montgomery sound like typical receivers we go for.

I'm also starting to think if Funchess is there with our second rd pick if he's in play? You have to think BB would love the mismatch his size would bring.

I'm afraid I can't see why someone would take Funchess on day one or two when the more athletic Darren Waller is available on day three. It's not as though Funchess has top quality WR skills that sets him apart.

He doesn't, and I remember seeing a few mocks months ago and laughing when I seen guys mocking Funchess to us in the first, but I don't know. His size, with the ability to move around all over the field, doesn't that sound like a BB pick?

I'm fine with just waiting on McBride, Bell or Smelter to be honest (with a special mention for Gavin Lutman). I think all three can give us what we need as much as higher rated WRs can. Off the top of my head, my WR board would be:

1. DGB (we won't draft him though)
2. Devin Smith - 2nd round
3. Sammie Coates - end of 2nd round/early day 3
4. Tre McBride - day 2
5. Kenny Bell - Early day 3
6. DeAndre Smelter - Day 3
7. Gavin Lutman - 7th round/UDFA
8. Tyrell Williams - same

But he doesn't have the athleticism, something BB likes in his receivers. The only thing I would say that favours a possible Funchess pick (or other tall WR like Jaelen Strong) is that BB did work out Kelvin Benjamin personally last year and they brought Mike Evans in for a visit. There is definite interest in a big WR. However, Tim Wright might have satisfied that interest.

Thanks for the nice compliments Ashley.

Smith was one guy I really struggled with as far as putting him on my list or not. I tend to agree with you in that I prefer the team waits on WR so I didn't want to have too many top heavy guys on my list. In a vacuum, I really like Smith's game. He tracks the ball really well and has great hands. He is a true deep threat right out of the gate and I think has the movement skills, athleticism, and fluidity to be more than that. I just don't think he fits what the Patriots need short term as we all know Brady's game is not the deep pass.

Man, I watched a lot of full Georgia Tech games to sift through and watch Waller and Smelter and now I see draftbreakdown has put up a lot of Smelter tape in the past week.

Actually, I think he fits the Pats in the short term better than anyone else, precisely because he is a bit of a one-trick pony, and what he does well is the one thing the Pats lack, namely the deep ball. Brady's tendency is to overthrow the deep pass, whether that's down to accuracy issues or 'playing it safe' is a question, but Smith is the one guy, I believe, that can better track and run under those deep passes.

Manx, I see you are still sleeping on Austin Hill.

He is being underrated because of his knee injury and absence from the combine, but when reading about these flags you'll see they are being overblown.

Why was Hill left out of the combine? I'm told he was graded poorly after the initial four games of the 2014 campaign, and though he played better later in the year, was never able to rebound enough to get an invitation. Regardless, at full health, Hill is a next-level prospect.

You'll notice that I don't have much under his "negatives". That's because Hill was considered a top prospect, potentially a 1st rounder, before his injury. From the tape before his injury, he was victimized more by QB play than anything else. Hill is a big, tough, athletic, versatile kid, with reportedly high character.

How He Fits: Austin Hill passes the 3-cone threshold needed to play receiver for the Patriots with only Edelman’s 6.62 3-cone time being better than Hill’s 6.65 result. Hill was primarily used in the slot in 2012 and outside in 2014

It's not so much that I'm sleeping on him, it's just that I only try to talk about prospects that I've watched - and I don't really plan to watch anyone else at this stage. You make a good case for him though, I'll keep an eye out for him. I'm always interested in underrated prospects.

You know me, I'm not exactly a big fan of investing a lot of draft capital in WR's and this thread is a good example of why. You guys have a done a GLREAT job in uncovering some very intriguing WR candidates that seem to have both promise and value like Smelter, and Hill, etc. It only confirms my contention that WR is the deepest position of talent in the league, not just this year, but EVERY year.

Thanks for the info

The more I thought about this, the more I tend to agree with you. I am still not sure if I would use I high draft pick on a guy like Smith, but I go who could add another level to the passing game would be a good thing. Edelman short, LaFell intermediate and someone who can make plays deep would make for a potent offense, and I didn't even mention Gronk and the other TE's

I can see Bill taking a WR at any point from 64 thereafter. I hope he doesn't reach early for guys like
Coates, Perriman & Funchess, in all of whom I wouldn't begin to show interest until 96 at the earliest.

5 drafts have concluded since Bill found a WR who could help TFB. About damn time he found another.
There's plenty from which to choose, so there should be no excuses not to find one to his liking.
