Byron Jones

SOURCES TELL US
"High-character player with the vision and instincts you want from an NFL cornerback. I'm not sure I like him in man coverage but there is a place for him in our league. Really nice young man who you cheer for." -- NFC North scout

"Team captain and leader on the field and in the locker room. Scouts say he's willing to play hurt and inspires his teammates."

Comments like that, I'm sold. May be out of our reach at 32 but I'll keep my fingers crossed. He's got perfect Patriot written all over him.

Maybe yes maybe no but consider this: How many shutdown corners are there in the league? Two, maybe three if you count Talib. How many top-flight QBs are there? A half a dozen at least. Of this is sub.ective but it seems as if there are a lot more top tier QBs than CBs.

Elite ? Revis, Sherman, Peterson, Haden, Talib..

Then you can also add in Chris Harris Jr, Vontae Davis and Grimes among the better CBs.. maybe also Flowers and Verner

I am sure I am forgetting a couple others as well..

Would you as Pat's GM trade up for Byron Jones ? I would.

In a heartbeat. As I said up thread, prospects like this don't come along too often. He has everything you look for in a great corner: speed, athleticism, intelligence, size, length, excellent hands. I can't say with absolute certainty that he will be a great corner because there's a mental aspect to the position that it's hard to quantify but I really like his chances. I wouldn't give up our second for him but would definitely trade 96 or 101 to get him.

No surprise there. Looks like Jerry's finally getting the hang of this draft thing, because he's now starting to listen to other people in the room, a lesson that Bill could use.
I can't believe (actually I can) that he didn't take a CB until the 7th damn round.

that's because stephen jones is doing the drafting.

i am fine with malcolm brown. both cb and nt were areas of need. the cowboys took jones a lot earlier than he was projected and there was no chance belichick would trade up.

I'm also fine with Brown, and with Flowers, but not with any of the others.

Admittedly it's coming from his own coach, but this is where I say "told you so" :)

You were right!

And you were right!

I apologise for patting myself on the back but this is my only forum to do so so forgive my self-indulgence :)

Easy there, Big Fella!!

Nobody's a bigger Fan of yours than I, but Jones was drafted in the 1st Round, after all. ;)

"I told you so" only applies if somebody was actually arguing with you.

And just about everybody expects good thing out'f'm.

I gave'm a lower Grade than most, and even that was that of a Warrior ~ 2nd/3rd Round Range.

Now if you're crowing about being the first on PatsFans to take notice of the kid ~ and I expect you were, as I don't tend to comment until I publish my Scouting Reports ~ then allow me to applaud, Sir.

I think that Marcus Peters really surprised me, he is playing as first or second CB and he is not bad, i am impresed on him. IIRC Byron Jones doesnt play a lot CB, he was covering Gronk and think that he is more safety than CB. He has ton of upside. Very good, keep up the good work.
But i think another of ur binky UDFA CFL Delvin Breaux is playing the best of the bunch. Tehnically he is not rookie but IMO u should get praise for him.

It's nice to see a guy I really liked do well. No need to take what I said as anything more than that. I'm not crowing, just pleased.

In Manx's defense a lot of people questioned if Jones was worthy of a first round pick and he defended his stance. It wasn't that others myself included didn't like him we just preferred corners who were more suited for press coverage. although Jones has surpassed expectations in that regard. My top three were Peters, Rowe and Jones in that order. Peters and Jones have clearly been the top two so really anybody who picked either can stake a claim. Rowe has really been coming on strong and was the most raw of the bunch so it's not a shocker he's taken more time.

I also like Quinten Rollins a lot and defended the knock that he lacked top end speed to be an elite corner. He was playing really well before his injury. I also advocated for a day three pick for Justin Coleman who's working out really well. I sent more time on the corner position than any other so naturally the Pats didn't double dip as many, myself included, suspected so I do take a bit of pride that I hit on the players I liked a lot.

Since you've brought up other CBs:
Would you have considered using our 2nd on DJ Smith or PJ Williams,
Can Tony Lippett make a successful conversion from WR to CB,
And would you have considered JaCorey Shepherd at 178 and/or Ifo Ekpre-Olomu at 202?

I was a big fan of Jacorey Shepherd. Shame he got injured in Philadelphia.

Nothing wrong with Crowing, Gents.

I'm a big Fan of Crowing. :D

I'm just saying that Jones wasn't exactly a Deep Dark Secret and that his lofty 1st Round Pedigree, combined with his burgeoning Success at CenterFielder, doesn't necessarily warrant an I Told You So from my Esteemed Colleague. Brother Manx pays me a very reasonable Stipend to bust'is Balls from time to time, and I feel honor-bound to give the many his Money's Worth, my fervent Admiration notwithstanding. :p

Well Jones ended up a first round pick but early in the draft process he was rated a lot lower universally. Maybe it's all the Patriots whiffs at the corner in the draft that have made us sensitive. :D

I don't have a problem with getting my balls busted from your esteemed self but there was a great big smiley face after my "told you so" - I wasn't being too serious. As I said, just glad for him and happy with my scouting.
