OT: Mike Reiss' espn blog

It's awful...I was in complete confusion and shock when I first saw the new site.
I spent really a lot of time on there, now I only go there once a day, for like 30 seconds to read the headlines and leave disgusted.

Why are you clicking on it?
.

On the blog? Or the post?

The post feeds into the blog. So if you load Reiss's blog, it's there. You can't avoid it.

Unless you avoid the blog. Which unfortunately, I am now doing.

I discovered that if you click on a tiny little link that says 'send feedback' (found under the little grid on the upper right next to the search icon), you'll get a chance to fill out a little survey on 'our new modern look'. I had quite a lot of fun filling that out. I especially enjoyed the page that had the questions: What do you like most about the new site? A: nothing. And What do you like least about the new site? A: everything.

I suggest everyone fill it out. It's very easy and quick. It would do them good to get an idea of just how bad this screwup was. Plus, you can mention Mike's blog.

It's free and I like Mike, but I agree that it's ridiculous to think someone intentional made such an ugly and poorly functioning site. I use to linger at the old site, even clicking on stuff I normally wouldn't [isn't that the idea?] I still go occasionally, find any new
Reiss stuff, then leave immediately.

Spots "journalism" just seems like the male version of Kardashianism these days, all about sensationalism and sideshows like fantasy foot ball.

I hope some organization decides to go after sports fans again and Reiss can go back to doing an excellent job in a dignified environment.
I just purely hate his site now and I used to love it. What the heck is ESPN trying to do, drive away readers??

I just filled in the survey. Funny thing, as I analyzed it, I found what I did and didn't like and it wasn't too far off from where I'd like it to be. If they got rid of the headlines at the top and the social media icons in the middle it would be pretty clean.

If you narrow the window, the table of contents disappears, and if you keep narrowing it, the social media icons and headlines disappear, and suddenly it looks pretty good.

So after some thought, I don't think the site is so bad anymore.

We'll have to agree to disagree. There are a lot of things that used to be completely straight forward that are a pain in the ass now. Navigation is horrible. There used to be many pieces of team based information available in the sidebar that are all gone for and require searching for independently. Just for an example, you used to be able to access a team's schedule from the sidebar. Not any more. You have to leave the blog, access the team drop down, and then the schedule. And THEN you get the entire schedule instead of the upcoming games. (I'm using the Celtics blog to determine this since their still in regular season).
I'm also pretty sure you were able to switch between team blogs without going back. You can't do that anymore. Plus, there's the whole issue of |42| ads being blocked by ad blocker the second a I hit the site, and the way it, at times, drags an iPhone to a complete standstill. For something that /appears/ to have been at least partially motivated by the whole 'mobile' thing, that isn't really an optimal result.

@rochrist. All good points. Going back again today, I was frustrated by the sidebar table-of-contents switching from Patriots Blog titles to some amalgam of other stuff with Reiss' blog. No consistent sense of context. I don't notice the ads so much, since they get blocked, but surely the slow it down.

Like the tip. I've got an add on called no squint for Mozilla and I blow the page up to 215% then adjust text size and it's a nice uncluttered blog again.

Scroll past articles on the murderer and it's almost like the old reiss's pieces.

Also might be fun to see what an integrated veteran receiver trio, plus whatever additions and receiving RB make the team, with Tom getting the green light to put up some points to offset temporary defensive soft spots.

I could really see some marches up and down the field with Ede, dola and LaFell after another training camp.

Brady has absolutely no problem with the long ball, it's a gamble for any QB and he hasn't had a consistent partner on that. However, no one in the history of any kind of football can touch him moving the chains, the hurry up and getting multiple quick receivers involved and Edelman and Amendola, and the Yac of LaFell, might break some new ground this year IMO.

Many think we can have six highly paid all pro receivers catch 80 balls each, but in reality. If Brandon Gibson gets less than his average, with some ath;letic plays, he could be a big contribution on a small salary.

I think they can replace most of Vereen's production at RB, but that remains to be seen. There are plenty of undersized receiving RBs in college every year and could be affordable, but that doesn't mean one will step up.

ESPN keeps on getting worse and worse. You can't click on ESPN Boston during the evening and get the score of the Sox game, let alone pertinent Pats info. Unbelievable that it keeps getting worse in every iteration

Unfortunately Reiss is in a bind. ESPN gives him the visibility that leads to a LOT of other business for him. Almost anything else would be viewed as a step down for him.

Agreed. The only place for Reiss that might not be a step down is the NFL Network. However, that move would come at a cost. He has small children and a wife and I suspect his role would be to provide a league-wide perspective which would involve a ton of travel. From my experience, being thousands of miles from home weeks at a time when the kids are sick and say that they miss you is a steep price to pay for career advancement.

I assume that he is currently paid well and has a good lifestyle situation going. As long as his personal brand doesn't take a hit, that may make working at ESPN and dealing with the negatives worth it.

For all those of you piling on to kick ESPN while it sucks...

I'm with you 1000%.

I didn't want to bother starting a new thread on the topic, so I'll post this here.

Off-topic to Mike Reiss and his blog, but it does involve one of espn's on-air 'personalities'.

The funny thing is that all her comments came after she was warned that she was being videotaped.

She's been suspended for a week. We've really got to put a stop to companies exercising power over off-the-clock employees.

yes, I agree....I refuse to have my right to act as a moron on my own time abridged by any media monstrosity with proven zero credibility.

So, was the tire pressure on their truck low? I assume this is part of the ongoing investigation.

wake up, RC...we're on to tire pressures and inspections going back twenty years...do try to keep up...

I'm not a fan of seeing her treatment of someone whose job is probably miserable as it is with angry people coming in all day to essentially bail their cars out of jail...she went way too far and did a great job of making everyone absolutely dislike her. I had no idea who she was until now and now I'm definitely not a fan, especially since the woman at the counter had zero to do with how her car got there. So that was completely out of line and deplorable.

But I also agree, penalizing someone for what they do off the clock is ridiculous. As I said, I obviously don't condone her behavior, but it's an interesting angle to think about and it makes you wonder where the line really ends.

Yeah, we are essentially allowing our employers to manage our personal lives. It needs to stop. These slopes get very slippery, very quickly.
