Interesting Tidbit from Albert Breer about the Wells' Investigation Today (4/10)

As far as the Colts the only potential wrongdoing would be tampering with the game ball, however they could be looking at Grigson contacting Kensil and Kensil going rogue and trying to frame the Patriots, which I still believe was at the core of this whole fiasco.

I agree, though there is no "only" about the potential (hypothetical of course) of the Colts wrongdoing.

If they had officially accused the Patriots of cheating by deflating footballs and then deflated a Patriot football in an effort to frame the Patriots then that's a very serious act of wrongdoing exponentially worse than anything the NFL has seen before.

And you can take this a step further and hypothesize that the Colts did more than contact Kensil but that they actively were working with him in a known rogue investigation and both were working together with the intent of catching and framing the Patriots in a way the NFL wouldn't be able to sweep under the rug. If so then that too is exponentially worse than anything any other team has done in the history of the NFL.

I'm not saying any of this happened, but the first scenario is well within the realm of plausibility.

Yeah, I mean if they (hypothetically) interview guys like Kensil, Grigson, Pagano, etc. extensively and haven't talked to a person from the Patriots in weeks; I guarantee you many people in the media know where the investigation is heading. They just can't report it because they have no source to make these claims.

Never stopped Kravitz or Doyel.

My point was that there is nothing wrong with contacting the league about a concern a team has, so the focus would be on tampering with the ball. Teams contact the league all the time so if Harbaugh told Grigson to have the Patriots game balls checked that would be well within their rights.

My belief for a long time is that Kensil was driving the bus until Goodell felt the need to farm it out to Wells because the league office had come a part of the investigation, and my take on that has been that Kensil never informed Goodell of what he was up to only to have it all blow up in his face. I really think he will be out of a job once the Wells report comes in.

My guess is they are awaiting a report from a 'Science' source on the temperature versus pressure issue (e.g. Columbia University). My recollection is the manufacturer denied the BB statement. So, there may be a second report forthcoming from the manufacturer (three, if Kraft commissioned a report as well).

IIRC, the manufacturer statement was just from some sales rep who went on talk about how Wilson's footballs stay inflated for years, and that when the Sun swells and engulfs the Earth in 7 billion years, Wilson footballs will be the last thing to go. Or something to that effect.

The problem is that the Wilson rep, like with everybody else in that first week, was talking about the wrong thing. He was saying a Wilson ball will not leak [moles of] air unless prompted to - he was purely making a comment about the integrity of the ball. He was ignoring the fact that temperature drop = pressure drop.

I do think availability of scientists could be a factor in the delay. You'd have to think by now they could've corralled somebody into doing an experiment that many patsfans folks did in a few hours.

The single game ball with 2+ psi below minimum will NEVER be any cause for a colts tampering charge (unless they have video of them surreptitiously removing air. ) The ball was in play and being lugged around and landed on by 300lb men and then had to be psi checked at least 3 times.

By definition of checking, you lower the psi. To check you have to let some air past the football valve and into the tester, onto the pressure sensor. So NFL will just wave that off and say the officials and colts checking unintentionally caused too much psi loss.

The Colts have we absolutely no authority to check game balls and if there were tape of the Colts or Patriots doing so it would be game over big sanctions coming. No team can alter a game ball in any way, only the v ref has the authority to check out.

I get what you are saying. There is nothing wrong with contacting the league about concerns.

However once you've made those accusations, you don't get to then handle the evidence in the case to convict the accusee.

There is real potential for wrongdoing on part of the Colts if they ever stuck a need in a Patriot football that subsequently was entered as evidence as proof of Patriot wrongdoing.

Agree completely. Unfortunately I think we would know already if there was any footage that indicted either the Colts or Patriots. However my optimism remains unfettered, i think Kensil is going to be fired and I'm still having wet dreams over who the Patriots will pick with the 6th pick in the draft.

Say what?
One, maybe two days effort by a grad student to run the high school experiment but using a temperature & humidity chamber*. A day for the writeup and a couple days for the prof to revise and sign it.
Done MONTHS ago.

The elephant in the stadium is that the NFL was fraking CLUELESS about physics and was gobsmacked by BB's tests.

* I did far more exhaustive tests temperature, humidity, etc. on telecom equipment we'd developed. Trivial.

Bill Nye the Science guy hasn't been interviewed to my knowledge :)

Breer typically knows squat. I've never remembered him being right about anything that's significant. Mid-season he said on Gresh and Zo that KC was the best team in the AFC by far. Dink...

I agree that Breer is an idiot who knows very little about football, but he does break a lot of stories in the NFL. He is no Schefter or Glazier in that respect, but he is far better than Mort. Knowing very little about the sport he covers and being plugged into the league are two different things.

I think we've all learned over time that being "far better than Mort" is an insignificant accomplishment. Breer has broken no stories of significance that I can recall. He's a useless tool who knows **** and spouts more of it. He couldn't hold Tom Curran's jock if his hands were soaked in Jerry Rice's cheating stickum.

Breer breaks a lot of League and owner news. He was the guy who broke that the owners of the Rams was building a stadium in Los Angeles. He broke a lot during the lockout. When it comes to league office and owner stuff, Breer is plugged in. He isn't as much at the player or individual team level news breaker like Schefter or Glazier. You don't see him breaking a lot of free agent signing news.

That is why if he isn't just speculating about the key point to look for is the league's involvement (which could always be the case), I think he knows the report is going to have a lot damning info for the league and Colts. He has a lot of connections in the league office which makes me think he isn't speculating as much as expecting to see something.

He's plugged into nothing meaningful and never has been.

He breaks a lot of wind. And for some reason you're blaming the dog.....

I hear you bud. I've seen Breer tweet crap that was total nonsense but I've also seen him have inside info on NFL business before anyone else. He can be a legitimate source of NFL info at times. Just depends on if today is one of those times.

It's pretty telling that Belichick was able to learn more about physics in a few days than the league has learned in almost 3 months.

He's available if they still need the balls tested, they could wrap it up by Sunday.
