What do you call a person who makes $44M a year and sucks at his job?

Goodell stands out in a bad way because the previous NFL commisioners/presidents served with distinction

  • Jim Thorpe - some say Athelete of the 20th Century
  • Joseph Carr - HoF
  • Carl Storck - couple of years
  • Elmer Layden - College HoF
  • Bert Bell - HoF
  • Austin Gunsel - shortimer
  • Pete Rozelle - HoF
  • Paul Tagiabue (nominated for HoF)
  • Roger Goodell
(influential parent) should be behind Goodell's name.

more successful than anyone on this board can dream of being
Don't confuse opportunity with success. Many people fake it till they make it in this world, and they suck at their job.

Depends on what you define as successful. If having lots of money and financial stability is what you call successful then I guess so. However, if you define success as your legacy then I I don't have to dream very hard with regards to Goodell. There are at least a million people who have the perception that this guy is a liar and or an idiot.

I think goodell resigns before the draft. With all his other screwups, he's bound to be booed off the stage if he waits more than a day or two to come up with the decision.

If he doesn't decide, he's a buffoon. If he decides to fine the Patriots, he'll be bundled with the murderer and the bomber in a Boston bon fire [or lynched on the stage of the draft].

If he decides no punishment, he'll be strung up by the rabid hordes he and his henchmen have created [see frankenstein].

He simply has painted himself in a corner. There's barely time to allow the results of his decision to cool before the draft. A resignation would at least be a [cowardly] way out.

He's not resigning, no chance. Kensil might be forced to "resign" though which would be almost as good.

He is only making $50M now? I thought he was racing LeBron James to the $1B mark.

I'd speculate that Ian could make that much money especially since he's raking in the dough from all those AFF redirects lately. ;)

Kidding!!!!!!! Please don't ban me.

Friendly wager. People can get through almost any kind of lying, cheating scandal, but once they become a public laughing stock, their days are numbered.

I cannot see him getting through the draft with his dignity intact. Remember, he is the face of the league and if there's one thing that billionaire's boys club is going to rebel against, it's being mocked by the media and fans.

All it takes is one meeting and he's gone, voluntarily or otherwise.

What do you call...?

The man in the empty suit.

I spent a long time in management circles. Saw too many of these guys. Got where they were through personal connections. Once there, if all under them went well through absolutely no effort on their part, they were fine. If things weren't going well, there was hell to pay with random victims burnt at the stake. Random because of course the empty suit had no real idea what was going on and who really was the problem.

Then when it crashed, via those connections again, onto the next job.

I'm not confused.

If Goodell was anywhere near as incompetent as you believe, he would have been fired long, long ago, probably years ago.

Maybe he will be gone soon, or NOT. However, for the past few years, Goodell has been a success in the minds of his bosses. And yes, I do think that is the usual way to measure success. he's not a doctor or lawyer or scientist. He is a businessman and a manager.

Technically, someone who grew up with a golden spoon and has been handed a high paying job on a silver platter because of it really isn't successful. True success is earned, not simply handed over. It also wouldn't surprise me if at least one member of this forum has made that much.

To suggest that rich people do not earn their success is an interesting hypothesis.

To me, his background got him the job. Once he'd been there a couple of months, it is his performance in pleasing the owners that defined his success or failure.

The Warren commission was faster than this deflate gate report.

You need to reread my post if you think I stated that rich people don't earn their success. Some do, Jonathan Kraft is a perfect example. That said, most kids born into super-wealthy families feel supremely entitled and are deeply flawed. Bill gates cites that as one of the biggest problems that super-wealthy families face. Goodell's background didn't remotely qualify him for the position of NFL commissioner. Every position he got was because of the influence of his father.

I think his success, such as it is, is because he doesn't give a damn about the game itself, only how to squeeze money out of it. Play a playoff game in Hong Kong with a 15 hour flight? Sure, if there's a 200,000 seat stadium and a worldwide pay per view contract.

He cares as much for the game as a pimp does for his meal ticket.

Some one who goes into a Contract Signing without a mask.

Guys like Goody get jobs because they have connections and then act like they earned it. I've seen it many times over the years.

Does he pay any taxes? I'm not sure that he does. If not that 44 mil is worth even more.

I would like to see him disappear from draft day. He and his phony hugs drive me crazy.

He is a fantastic commissioner, he has managed to keep the refs from striking, and keep people talking about football more than bad calls. He has made sure no scandal gets blown out of proportion. He's kept it so only like 5 or 6 Superbowls are mired in baseless scandals that overshadowed the game. He's been so fair and even in punishments that he's only been overturned on nearly every decision. He's also managed to be loved by both players and fans.

Slight qualification - I'm pretty sure the 44m was for the entire contract. But I'm not going to Google that.
