My take on "Cap is Crap"

For the record I do not listen to Felger. In fact, I refuse to do so. I have been asked to call into his show and will not. Why? It is not because I am afraid of debating the salary cap with Mike Felger.
I would bring a DeathStar to the conversation while he would bring a water pistol. I will not call into the show because I am an unabashed fan of the Patriots. As such, my opinion according to him is not worth that much. I started this thread because it is so tiresome to hear the "cap is crap" quote from fellow Patriots fans.

Epic!
We need a megalikes icon

Done.
(Although I forgot to mention Patscap.com, sorry!)

Before his and Mazz's take on Deflategate made me break my vow and listen to WEEI again and I was listening to captain Douchebag, he was going on about "Why are the Pats $11 million below the cap?" Then Jonathan explained that Wilfork and the then healthy Mayo were getting not likely to be earned bonus, that with a healthy season (unlike 2013) that will be earned and they need space for that. Felger's response was "Huh?"

The Patriots ending $11 million over the cap might, I think, be worthy of an apology from Captain Douchebag. Anyone still listen to him to tell me if he did?

BTW, WEEI, if you have the equivalent of Smerlas and DeOssie breaking down a 4 way trade of Manny Rameriez on a Patriots Monday when the baseball season is over, I'm gone again for, what, 10 years.

Mike Felger.

Felger lives with his wife, the Wood (also known as Fox 25 anchorwoman Sara Underwood), and their daughter in Boston. He’s given up most of the hobbies he used to enjoy, including golf, skiing and reading. He enjoys spending time in places he can’t afford, most notably Nantucket. E-mail Felger at [email protected].

First off, props to Miguel. The most interesting man on patsfans.

Secondly, don't wanna hijack the thread but I urge you to google Sara Underwood. :)

Honest question Miguel, have you ever tried calling into the show? I know you would be cut off and shut down but have you ever tried?

I agree with your stance, Miguel. Unlike most on this board, I am not bothered by the sports radio hosts. They are entertainers and I am entertained by them. When listening, I know they have some knowledge about sports, but recognize that their jobs depend on ratings.

Back to Miguel : there is no reason for you to bring your knowledge of the salary cap to their world of ratings. You are right to "not bother" as your information would be drowned out by interruptions and stuff like "but,but... Cromartie, but Revis..." and you wouldn't be allowed the chance to begin a decent convo.

He has a star QB that helps to not only attract players for a chance to win but also he has played much of his career (after his rookie deal) making 20% less than what he could have otherwise if he demanded it.
Brady had the 5th highest cap number for a QB in 2005.
highest in 2006
2nd highest in 2008
4th highest in 2009
with a 17.4 million cap number in 2010 had have one of the top 5 highest cap numbers for a QB that year
5th highest in 2012
5th highest in 2013

I have been following the NFL salary cap since 2001.
Never saw a strong correlation between cap space + winning
Never saw a strong correlation between cash spending + winning
Saw a strong correlation between cap management + winning.

Miguel, a personal question, Do you wear a green eyeshade?

While donating, golfers could also sign up for their annual golf tourney. And after golf they have a fantastic early dinner at Montvale Plaza in Stoneham. From what I understand, the owner takes no money for the family style meal, which is a very nice gesture.

One thing I learned is that Belichick and Kraft sit down each year and do up a budget. This has a significant impact on how contracts are made up and how cap hits are structured. Belichick is not only managing the cap but he is also managing the cash he is allowed to spend each year. Belichick has only to worry about the Patriots but Kraft has to manage the cash flow for all his business interest.

The biggest risk of the Saints "cap is crap" strategy is that you can end up in a situation where all of your roster moves are dictated by the cap, rather than by on-field performance. You can end up is a situtation where you have to release good players and keep bad players because you painted yourself into a cap corner.

1) Props to Miguel, of course... owner of the most complete, best documented cap resource devoted to the fans of a single NFL team. Yet another way NE fans are lucky. Even when we can only sort of follow cap implications we at least have a place to learn more.

2) Yeah, the Saints fire-sale is a timely and extremely clear counterexample.

I don't get the Boston media down here, and it sounds like Felger and Mazz aren't anything to feel you're "missing out on."

1. The CAP IS Crap.

2. Said CAP is crap only if your players agree to deals that are structured in a way that can minimize potential dead money or high cap numbers. This is where Felger is completely wrong in his railing against the Patriots about Revis. He didn't even know the low full guarantees that Sherman and Peterson got. (Those deals both start rising in a year or so, but they can cut or restructure with minimal or no hit I beleive.)

You cannot take on 16 FG if you were the Pats. That is dumb CAP management. Another CAP is crap misnomer by those losers is "well the CAP is going up. It could be 160 next year! You'll have plenty of money!" Now it could be and quite possibly be so. This doesn't however mean the salaries stagnate. If McCourty got ~28 guaranteedand the CAP is 160 vs 142, is the market then 30-31? What will Hightower et al get vs what they would have gotten this year? My feeling is this dismantles their argument and wonder why no one has called in to bring this point up.

I don't know if any of this made any sense whatsoever, but please correct me where I may be wrong.

...And, somehow the league ok'd the Jets to release players prior to the start of the new league year so it wouldn't count against their 2011 cap. Yet, Goodell takes cap space from Dallas and Washington for going over an imaginary cap.

I totally forgot about this. More ammo that the Jets might benefit from a bit of FO favoritism. Strange that this isn't discussed more in that light. I'm sure that NO and a few others since would liked to have that "Get out of Cap Jail" card.
