NFL to Hire Sarah Thomas as First Female Official

And yet another bastion of male erectitude falls into the crevasse of dismay and despair as the realization that a women may know football as well as a man dawns.
When will it end for these poor shells of a 19th century demigod. They shout out "When will my erectness be fulfilled. Worship me thou craven women. Behold, I am a man, getith me a brew, and takeith off those forsaken shoes!"

I know a bunch of women that have played and plays football. Mean girls that could knock you on your ass. I've even had a girl in on my team.

The reason that a lot of the women that you see in sports media aren't that good at analyzing is because they weren't hired because their football knowledge, but because of their good looks. There are absolutely girls that have good knowledge of football. But please. Show the scientific research that shows that women, for some real reason are worse at understanding football. Show that women by their very nature and genes can't understand the game. Because that is what you are saying. Just because you don't know many girls that understand the sport does not mean that girls can't understand or be interested in the sport. I know a bunch of guys that just watch football because the excitement, but who knows basically nothing about the sport. Does that mean that guys can't understand football?
They may play the lingerie bowl or, at best, a weekend flag football league but never at the professional, college or even high school level.
I don't think it's an unfair point to question their degree of understanding a sport in which they don't participate in any meaningful way. It's not PC but it is a hard reality.

BTW- equality is not about taking all the fun things away from the men and giving it to the women. Its about allowing women to have the same freedom to choose, as men do. If a woman is competent and capable of reffing in the NFL, which she clearly has demonstrated the ability to do, then she should be allowed to do what she wants. Stop judging someone just because of your own preconceived limitations on what women are able to do. It only reflects poorly on you. She on the other hand, is now an NFL ref. Congrats to her.

You're talking as if equality of opportunity is the way the equality game is played. It's not. Equality (or better) of outcome is how the game is played today, and how it's been played for decades.

I always wondered, Deus: did your avatar beat out the competition on merit alone?

Ehh.... Those contests all have some bias/rigging in them. But I'm a sucker for the ladies of India and the Orient, so

That's all kinds of yummy goodness to me.

For all the chauvanistic idiots out there, this broad would make you swallow every chicklet in your grill for running your mouth.

why?...is she sawed off shotgun proof?

as far as a qualified female ref in the NFL...well...why not...it can't get any worse than the male morons working the games now...

We said that about the NBA referees, too, and then they gave us Palmer and Kantner, and proved us all wrong.

Feminazis? Yes because equal rights is totally equatable to the mass murder of millions of innocents. Unbelievable.
Really? That's what feminists are all about? Equality? Most of the stuff I've heard from them just sounds like "off the deep end" misandry (men are all guilty of being part of the "rape culture" or some such nonsense). They don't sound different than any other hate group and should never have been taken seriously.
Also, I've never seen a woman garbage collector in my life. I'm positive there are women who are qualified to do this job. I've never heard any "equal rights" advocates ever complain about women being underrepresented in those kind of jobs. I only hear complaints about women being underrepresented in CEO-type positions and the other highly desirable jobs.
Equality my ass.

100% correct...but it did take some heat off the league approved fixer refs they already had.

I actually dumped this girl to hook up with her. She was a sweetheart, but we weren't compatible. It was a Zodiac sign thing.

How many women do you know that have played football at any level?
Can you name one female member of the sports media that ever made an intelligent and insightful comment about game of football? EVER?
The next woman I meet with anything more than a superficial knowledge of the rules of the game will be the first women I met with anything more than a superficial knowledge of the rules of the game.
Let's be honest, this is a man's game. Over the years, I've noticed that more and more women are watching the sport because they they caught up in the excitement of it but I find that they are mostly 1/2 paying attention whenever there's a group of them watching and I find myself being asked to repeatedly explain the basics of the game to them (which is as annoying as f*ck).
It's as if men can't be allowed to have anything they can enjoy for themselves without a bunch of feminazi's getting their panties in a wad.
F*ck this PC bullsh*t and all the women and b*tchboys that support it! It's gone way too far and needs to stop.

I know women who have more than a superficial knowledge about NFL football.

But hey, since I never made the cut to play on an organized sports football team in HS or college and only played intramural and corporate football, I'll just stop posting on this thread.

You just gained a +10 in the humanity and humility column in my book. Love our female fans. It's growing bigtime. I think it's great.

Extremists take this stuff too far, in all directions. Whether women should be officiating football at the NFL level is a legitimate question, but whether they can learn the game is not.

It's unclear to me what you're trying to say here. You mean, female refs in the NFL are inevitable so we should just accept it?

To an extent, yes, that is what I was saying (it, in fact, is inevitable). Whatever ramifications, good or bad, are not going to be considered (though I argued that considering ramifications would be wise -- PC won't allow that though). So if 'it is what it is', no sense in not accepting 'what it is'.

I'm off the mind that equality of opportunity should always be the default. Tradition is not a valid counter argument to that. However, as there are differing physical and societal standards for the genders, it is always worthwhile to 'calculate the ramifications' of the change. And in a very very few instances gender should be considered before 'equality of opportunity'.
With that said I am having hard time finding a compelling enough reason to say the female gender should not referee an NFL football game. There are points to consider but I don't see them as compelling enough to set aside 'equality of opportunity'.
But introducing females to a closer proximity to the scrum of the NFL line of scrimmage, considering the behaviors that society says is not acceptable for females to be exposed to, the game will change eventually. This new female referee may not be the prime catalyst for the actual change but she definitely will be the start. As to whether the change will be good? That's an unknown/different topic...

Interesting thread. I never realized that physical differences between men and women meant that one was more suited to blow a whistle and make hand gestures.

Studies indicate that men see better than women at any real distance. Studies indicate that men also are better at spacial viewing.

So, yes, actually, in the context of seeing and calling a game live, while on the field, the physical differences between men and women probably DO mean that men are generally more suited.
