The 3-Pick Plan: CB, DT, OL?

Is LB not a big need with Hightower not available until mid season and no one knows what the story is with Jerod Mayo's patella tendon injury. With the loss of Ayers and Castillo the Pats are very thin at LB. They are so thin they brought in Rolando McClain for a look this week. If someone like Eli Harold or Bernardrick McKinney is sitting at 32 they have to consider them as well. I call this the Double Down draft and see the Pats taking two players at CB, OL, DT and LB. What do folks think of taking Anthony Chickillo DE Miami as a conversion project to ILB. He has ideal size and speed for the position. He would be available in the 4th rd picks. I like Quentin Rollins CB Miami (OH), a player who has only one year at the position and a ton of potential (like Richard Sherman was when he came out). He is raw but he is a playmaker.

I can see the argument for adding an LB, but not in round 1. The Pats have 3 excellent LBs in a league where most defensive snaps are played in nickel or dime. IMO a new linebacker couldn't be expected to have the same impact on the team's success as a CB, OL or DT (or maybe even WR or RB, much as it pains me to say so!)

Well THAT is the million dollar question. Here's how I see it.

1. It's a simple fact that high end DT talent is as rare a commodity as franchise QB's. You can't pass one up given the opportunity.

2. On the other hand, solid run stuffers are another story, and are can be found throughout the draft most years. So the question becomes is there going to be a DT worthy of the pick at #32, and if not what kind of pick would make you take a leap to have a 5th year with the player.

3. The safest choice would probably be an offensive lineman that you could project as an upgrade at LG. That being said, history has shown us that we can likely find a starter in the 2nd, 3rd of even 4th rounds of the draft, so any OL pick that high would necessitate being not only an immediate starter but a an obvious upgrade

4. The real strength of our draft is going to come between picks 96 and 105. Will there be any" hidden gems" at that part of the draft. Who are the "Dominique Easley's of this draft, because when it comes down to it, the ONLY real "steals" that are going to happen between 1-95 are going to be injury, character concerns, or players with Jamie Collins syndrome, a small school genetic freak.

5. I am comfortable that we will find our OL depth, whether it's early or later. However for the rest, I find it hard to think we can do more than just average unless we are willing to roll the dice with more than a player or 2. Other wise I don't see us adding any impact players to the starting roster this year.

6. So beyond Marcus Peters, who are the injury/character guys who could possibly fall to us in the first 4 rounds that would make the congregation go "wow". This is the year I think we should take some shots. We have been drafting pretty well for numbers and depth the past 4 or 5 years, so I think we could afford to swing and miss this year. I think the draftnik community can do a real service to the less able like myself by creating a list of high risk reward picks that we can follow this month

We have enough ammunition to get some quality players where we pick, 5 in the top 101. We have plenty of ammunition if we want to move up in any of the rounds. Five of the top 101 players in the draft should help outré team significantly.

Perhaps, Belichick will need to deal with the issue of whether to draft a stud DT at 32. I suspect that this will not be an issue.

It seems to me that we should be able to find a starter at LG, a future starter at CB, a run-stuffing DT and a RB to complement Blount.
======

I understand that the bargains are among the injured (although they often bust). and the patriots can afford to take chances. I guess that I'm a bit tired of medical reports being the most important news from camp.

Steven Belichick worked out Ben Heeney. Doesn't have the traditional size for a Patriots linebacker but then neither Jonathan Casillas.

Heeney had the top 3 cone, short shuttle and long shuttle of any linebacker and the 6th fastest 40. I have to believe they're looking at him for the Don Davis hybrid role along with being a core special teamer. I think he may go to a Tampa 2 team higher than Bill will want to take him but if he makes it into the 5th round it wouldn't shock me if they drafted him.

I have a feeling BB is going to draft a LB earlier than any of us are projecting. Which is bad news for the real Mayo. Whom will be playing his last year as a Patriot and we'll need his replacement.

Dream scenario:

I hope Danny Shelton slides to around pick 15-19 and we trade up for him

Wow, your dream draft is a "1-pick plan"? It could take all 4 of the Patriots' picks on days 1 & 2 to trade up that high.

I referenced the Josh Norris/Doug Kyed NESN podcast in the Byron Jones thread but there was an interesting DT nugget too.

I've mentioned it before but Kyed has said that he's heard that the Pats are interested in Jordan Phillips and Grady Jarrett. Well in the podcast, Kyed said that he heard that the Pats are interested in Jarrett in the first round.

Now I have no idea about how reliable Kyed or his sources are so I won't speak to the authenticity of this rumour but before you dismiss it completely, bear three things in mind:

1. I don't believe that there's a huge difference between Jarrett and Easley. There games are very similar. In some respects, Jarrett is better.

2. Jarrett is smart, has been talked about as a defensive leader at Clemson and is a former wrestler.

3. BB was at the Clemson pro day. Three of the previous seven first picks have been met with/worked out by BB.

I would be surprised if it happened this way, just not completely.

In my mind, quality dt's are harder to find than cb or lb or interior o line.

I could see them taking bennett of Ohio state in the second. Easley with better size and functioning knees.

And yet inferior to Easley in every other relevant aspect. Seems like a waste of an early pick.

I'd happily take Grady Jarrett at 64. He really impressed me.

I don't see him

As inferior in any aspect to be honest.

Agreed. Would make for a really interesting attacking DL alongside Easley.

I don't see how they can pass on PJ WILLIAMS CB OF FSU. He's what they're looking for.

It seems that there are about six corners in this category.

Here's my question: what makes you think they're looking for a pure press man corner, after discarding Browner? I really don't know what they're looking for in a CB (or an OG, for that matter).
