Do not see them signing McClain at all.. "once bitten twice shy".

Step 1: Sign McClain and have him smoke pot in the off-season so he gets suspended for the first 4 games and doesn't take up a roster spot
Step 2: Start the season with Mayo until he gets injured around week 4, then swap in McClain
Step 3: Profit???

I'm a big believer in environment affecting people, and this young man had a lot of issues, then got drafted by the Raiders, the most dysfunctional organization in the league. I mean heck, Dallas was a stable place for him.

So I think there's value in surrounding him with pros like Mayo and Hightower and Collins. They would help him as much as he would help the team.

Edit: Or he could start the season for High if he's still injured. I forgot about that. But I want to forget about that.

Another one bites the dust...

Dallas first offered him a veteran minimum, he definitely is worth more than that after his play last season, I thought he would be such an excellent fit here that BB would even go a little over his based value for the player if necessary, but not in this range, maybe 2 Mi tops in an incentive laden deal. This guy presents a high chance of pumping the breaks after a payoff.

Everything about McClain other than his physical abilities is totally the opposite of what BB wants.
Again, I think it was confirmation that he is not a Patriot type player, and I'd bet a lot BB concluded his guess was right.

And in doing so, he elected to offer McClain a contract?

It could have been heavily incentive-based (e.g., $50,000/game active, etc.).

This never made terribly much sense to me. It's hard to win a bidding war when you don't see a guy as a definite starter but another team does.

The two most logical signings are players the Patriots wont touch with a ten foot pole:
Fletcher and Spikes.

@jeffphowe: The Patriots offered Rolando McClain $4 million in a contract that was comparably structured to the accepted Cowboys' $4M offer, per source.

@Edwerderespn: I believe Rolando McClain offers from #Cowboys, #Patriots were very comparable and for nearly same total value. $3M base with $1M play-time

@jeffphowe: I do find it interesting McClain got a $4M offer from the Pats, who could restructure Mayo's $4.5M injury guarantee when he passes physical.

The media is going to push the "same offer" narrative, but identical contracts would have to make Dallas' offer more enticing financially. In Dallas, there's nobody to blame but himself if he doesn't get the full million in incentives. In New England, he'd be betting against the health or performance of three very good players.

Wasn't too interested in McClain anyways but yet another player that chooses the other team over us. I just don't understand why these players aren't showing the interest.

in my opinion, its pretty simple. I think it comes down to playing time. We have a lot of good players at just about every position. theres no guaranteed playing time here. its nice to go to a winning team that has a shot at a title, but id rather play on a crappy team than ride the bench on a great team

I don't want anything to do with this guy. But like Joey just said two posts up I don't understand why we're having so much difficulty signing free agents this year. This better not be fallout from our reputation being tarnished due to the BS around KensilGate.

I was thinking about that too, usually the world champions have a better shot at attracting veteran free agents looking for a championship ride, but this year's free agency went crazy, teams throwing money a lot even at players on the wrong side of the 30's so I think it's all about money in the end. BB stuck to his approach.
