OT: Atlanta / Cleveland Punishments

I was shocked at how cheaply the Falcons got off. What they did is CLEARLY more egregious than Spygate.

Plus I agree with Mayo that no way the League gives takes a 2015 pick away from the Jets if they didn't do it for the Falcons.

I think the league is waiting to issue the Jets punishment so that it can push it to 2016.

I think this is setting up to be a giant let down for Pats fans..

The Wells investigation will come out as "inconclusive" and the only thing accomplished will be the further sullying of the Pats name without any proof.

The Jets will have to swap a 7th round pick in 2019 for their tampering

I happened to catch Mike & Mike this morning and they had Chris Mortensen on discussing the penalties to Cleveland and Atlanta. One of the hosts opened the questioning by saying that some people were suggesting that both teams got off light.

I don't remember what the commentary on Atlanta was, but the defense of Cleveland was laughable. Mort said that while people think missing the first four weeks isn't a hard hit, he emphasized what damage this does to Ray Farmet's reputation, and then asked hypothetical of what happens if Joe Thomas gets injured during the first week. Right Mort, and what happens if an asteroid hits the stadium in Cleveland?

I was waiting to see if there were any updates on the Pats issues, but what value would it have been considering who the messenger was?

ESPN would have been embarrassed at Mort's report if they had any shame.

Fark it. Run up the score on everyone next year. I've had it with these motherfarking snakes in this motherfarking league.

I'm pretty upset but somehow I'm just not surprised. Falcons deserved to lose a 1st round pick. What they did was worse than camera gate. F*ck the league and them saying They try to do the "right thing". They don't give a damn about doing the right thing. The "right thing" to them is dollar and cents until someone calls them out on it. They really don't care about doing the right thing.

The NFL is about PR not about 'justice'. They are selling a product not striving for an ideal society.

The sooner you accept that the sooner you stop being outraged when camera placement warrants a 1st round pick and piping in crowd noise gets a slap on the wrist.

Both should have been slaps on the wrist.
I would have liked this but your latest signature freaks me the hell out!

If something like a Joe Thomas injury happens, that's a big setback without an easy solution. It really doesn't matter if Cleveland has Farmer running the team or an all-star team of successful GMs in his place.

Here's the thing that I assume Mort and Mike & Mike didn't mention: Someone is going to be acting GM while Farmer is suspended. It's not like the GM spot will be vacant during that time. Right up until his suspension begins, Farmer can work with the acting GM to come up with contingency plans if an injury occurs (Promote the second string player, sign a free agent, sign a practice squad player, seek a trade, etc) like he would probably be doing if there was no impending suspension. So if something like the Thomas injury occurs, the acting GM will know his available options and will make a decision. It's highly doubtful that Farmer will return to work to find out that his temporary replacement traded 3 first round picks for Marcus Cannon.

I often wonder about why the league appears to have favorite sons - some of them are obvious - the Jets and Colts for example - and also why some teams are so harshly treated - New Orleans, Washington for example.

  1. It is worth noting that Rich McKay is the Chairman of the NFL's Competition Committee. Not to sound all paranoid conspiracy theorist, but I can't help but wonder how much this is a case of taking care of their own. I realize that the Competition Committee doesn't have anything to do with the investigation or punishment, but it does have the appearance of good old boys taking care of each other.
  2. As noted above, punishment seems to have a much closer correlation to the amount of publicity to a case than to the severity of a misdeed; scandal trumps rule breaking and creating an unfair advantage. And the amount of publicity an event receives is directly related to how much information is leaked to the league's mouthpieces in the press; contrast the new leaks on daily basis with football inflation versus the absence of any with these two cases.
  3. Also as noted above, penalties appear to have a correlation with a team's success. The Saints and Patriots were given severe sanctions; the Falcons (as well as the two teams found tampering with footballs earlier this past season) received a slap on the wrist (or less).

The Patriots fully cooperated with the league in 2007 and 2015. It did them no good. The league office should be represented by a proportionate number of employees from all the teams. It's a bunch of former Jets employees, since it is located in New York.

That's right, a bunch of maroons and chimps that they don't have to pay to relocate. Plus, none of them are smarter than the Fraudell in charge.

People need to chill with this non sense. The only team in New York is the Bills and they aren't getting any help.

Fo'real though Joker was right all along about Jetdell. Like I said before, ironically it turns out Joker was the most sane person on this board.

Comical that these punishments set up a much lighter punishment for the Jets. They basically used two other franchises blunders to cover up one of the worst tampering cases the league has seen in awhile. Mark my words. Friday at 5:55 pm, on the eve of the final four, the hand slaps will be thrown down. New England will be exonerated and somehow Godohell will throw in the light punishment on the Rats.

Cannon is worth more than that.

:)

If they are handing out punishments this week, is the Patriot's one coming for the ball thing?

If they are handing out punishments this week, is the Patriot's one coming for the ball thing?

1. Ineligible receiver rule changed
2. Jets allowed to tamper with Revis
3. Witch hunt of Deflategate continues despite all evidence that clearly shows that:
a) The Pats did nothing wrong
b) The Colts knew they were gong to make this allegation before the game, and then shockingly,
the one ball in their possession turns out to be the only ball seriously underinflated.
c) The league tried (and failed) to set up the Pats for the fall.
d) The distractions that the league hoped would derail the Pats in the Superbowl victory #4, didn't work.

The Patriots punishments have been getting handed out since the AFC Championship game and will continue until the former Jets employee in charge of the league can get the taste of the throw up that happened just before he had to hand Kraft a 4th Lombardi out of his mouth.

The silence on this is DEAFENING. I thought this might end up being a 3 day story. I was wrong, it hardly lasted one. The National Fraud League has proven to the world that hypocrisy us alive and well and living in the country's favorite sport. There is no inconsistency the league won't stoop to when handing out punishment. Cleary the standard is that we take care of friends and screw with anyone who is perceived as a threat. (though why anyone one would think the Saints are a threat is beyond me).

The integrity of the game is a joke. The league pretty much declared open season on the rules if that what creating an unfair advantage by pumping in noise gets you as a punishment. Why wouldn't pumping in noise be an option for EVERY team. It could win you 2 more games a year, the chances of being caught are minimal (if you have half a brain) and if you get caught what have you lost? There isn't a fan in the league who wouldn't trade 2 wins for a 5th round pick 2 years from now.

Outside of making money, the league seems only to have a single paramount issue these days, and THAT is to do what is necessary to restore the competitive balance to the league that the Patriots have thrown so far out of whack. The league longs for the day when they no longer have to go back to their fans every year and try to explain why the Pats are doing EVERY year what they can't get their teams to do. EVERY other team seems to come back to the pack every few years. Even the so called "elite" franchises, so why shouldn't the Pats.

So the league will continue to screw with the Pats' reputation with gratuitous leaks and innuendos. They will make sure they don't get the pick they deserve from the Jets tampering., Favorable calls will be fewer and farther between this year, and unlucky ones will become more prevalent, and of course rules changes that favor the mediocre will continue to prevail as the dumbing down the league progresses.

Still hoping that the Wells report will surprise me, but I'm not holding my breath
