Florio: Jets File Tampering charges AGAINST Pats

should never have said nothing, the correct answer was: "I can't comment on players under contract with another organization, especially with an investigation going on that matter".

It would push even more pressure to Goddell and Woody would panic maybe throwing some words that in the end would give more credibility to our cause.

Goodell is going totally witness protection today, you watch.
With Goodell it's more like "witless" protection. I know the Jets charges are patently ridiculous but don't underestimate the effect of Goodell's bias and stupidity. Kraft should not have opened his mouth about Revis situation until Jolly Roger made a ruling on the tampering.

In business, there is an expression that you don't "damage the brand" or do something to hurt your image. While the Jets themselves are a cl*sterf*ck of an organization, their actions of making a false claim of tampering damages the NFL at large and hurts the value of all teams... Goodell and the other owners can't be happy that one of their owners is acting like the drunk uncle at Thanksgiving embarrassing them all....

So, tampering.....

- Jerry Jones, after Murray signed with the Eagles

- Lions GM Martin Mayhew, after losing Suh to the Dolphins

- Bob Kraft, after losing Revis

Atta boy, Jest! Dumbasses...

Exactly. For Woody's charge to have any bite, owners/coaches could not praise departing players to mollify their fan bases. It's an absurd claim.

I would also think that tampering has to do with someone nearing the end of their contract/soon to be freee agent and/or with an option about to be picked-up/declined. In the NFL, given the life of careers, how can you tamper with someone who is under another team's control for several years?

It's a mockery. Like I said, I'll bet a lot of the other owners are livid and Goodell has to know that this makes him and his office look like an even bigger joke. I wouldn't surprised if the league added sanctions to Woody for this newest absurdity.

Pettiness like this is a hallmark of all NY/NJ teams. They all feel a need to bloviate their feigned importance in the sports media arena. It plays to the base like a politician preaching to the choir at a campaign rally.

The purpose is to subliminally rally the base to heighten their interest in short term emotional craving. Like giving a dog a bisquit .... it satisfies their present need .... the hunger for immediate satisfaction. They are emotional simpletons of the lowest denomination.

Manish Sphincta is the perfect media whore for them...he is their porn.

My god, this is the most pathetic organization in football. No Super Bowl APPEARANCES (forget wins) since '69 and now this crap. Woody Johnson is the biggest clown in the league and they're not winning anything with him at the helm. Now I SERIOUSLY hope Goodell makes them swap firsts with us, not only for BLATENT tampering but for wasting his ******* time with this nonsense.

You did, or someone did, I remember that thread. Can you link to the post?

This illustrates why lawyers tell their clients not to talk to the media (or anyone else) about a case. Any comment no matter how innocuous can give rise to a claim, and a claim, even it is not meritorious, can muddy the waters. Here, obviously what Kraft said was not tampering, as it was in the past tense. But it's time consuming to prove that fact. The Jets attorneys will insist that there was an implied offer beyond the literal language. All the Jets need to do is hassle and annoy Kraft enough so that they or he decide not to pursue the original claim of tampering.

The people here arguing that the Jets claim is not meritorious miss the legal strategy: the Jets don't need to prove their claim is valid, they just need to make it as annoying and time consuming as possible to defend.

I wish the fans wringing their hands over Kraft's statement would get over it, honestly. I mentioned, and Deus posted, almost identical comments by the Cowboys and Lions over losing star players.

It is beyond absurd to think that what Kraft or any of the others said is tampering, particularly when you're talking about players who are about to START long-term contracts with other teams. This isn't "strategy," it's insanity.

Owners and coaches speak to fans about losing star players - of course they do! That's part of the public relations of being an owner.

And there is no "legal strategy" here, since it's not a court of law. Woody stuck his crooked and wrinkled old finger in the eye of the NFL. Let's see if RG has the gumption to truly smash the guy the way he deserves to be smashed.

Of course it's not tampering. But the charges the Jets filed give Goodell the cover to blow off the charges NE filed. Kraft should have said nothing, like BB.

If that's the case, then what about comments by every other team, every year, when they lose a star player?

Woody's comments reduce the NFL to another level of stupidity. They won't sit well.

Well, I hope your unwarranted faith in Goodell is rewarded.

(Also, do those "comments by every other team, every year" happen while they have pending tampering charges against the team that signed the lost player? I don't recall this particular scenario happening before. The problem is this -- Goodell will acknowledge that Kraft's comments aren't tampering. He will then (intentionally, falsely) equate Johnson's comments to Kraft's, dismiss both sets of charges, and tell them to stop bothering him with playground stuff. If Kraft had shut his mouth Goodell would not have this opportunity.)

PFT just opened the bomb bay doors. Waited until it was no longer the headline. Hilarity shall ensue!

Goodell is in a corner here. He survives at the suffrage of the owners.

Woody is mocking them all with this ridiculous charge, and mocking the rules of the NFL - which have been enforced to serious consequence before.

Kraft said the same thing he and every other owner and every coach not named BB say when they lose a star player - we wish it would have worked out for us. He's a great player.

To equate that to what Woody did, and yes, with forethought and malice, is to stretch an analogy to the point of absurdity. Goodell is a lot of things, but stupid isn't one of them. I'm pretty sure that more than a few owners were pretty upset when Woody opened his mouth in the first place - like I said, tampering hurts their ability to hold sway over the players, so while the teams are in competition, there remains a gentlemen's agreement among the owners for the sake of them all.

And now this thumb in the eye of the NFL out of spite. I have to believe that Woody got wind that something bad was coming his way and this is a last desperation move.

And I think it will backfire. Woody might get sanctioned to go along with the fines/picks.

Same
Old
Jest
losers...
other teams file tampering charges Before a player hits free agency, the rodents do it after they sign a player and its impossible for another team to affect the out come.

I'm just as pissed on Kraft's comments as BB should be. God damn it, as if the Jets could not get an extra help being them the Jets and Goodell being Goodell.

This will offset things. Goody will say "Bob we will make this a tie, no one loses, and we are dropping the deflategate, all set?"

I don't see it. It was reported that the Jets were already expected to get a harsh penalty. This just adds fuel to the fire.

The Pats are dominating the news.

Jets butt hurt after being caught tampering.
Ravens whining about formations.
Colts whining about footballs.
Bills make the Pats #1 target.

The way I look at it is this: tampering is when you speak about what you want to happen with a player in the future, or what you intend to do. This is what Johnson did.

Tampering is NOT speaking about what already happened and how it didn't work out. You're not tampering with a player by talking about what they already know. The player knows you wanted them because they got your offer, and they already know what the value of the offer was. There's no tampering of any sort here. This is what Kraft did.

Furthermore, you have to take the timeframe into consideration somewhat. Though Johnson's comments were tampering, if he had made them right after Revis signed his deal with the Pats, it wouldn't have probably had a very big impact. I doubt any charges would've been filed. But instead Johnson made his comments toward the end of the season, only a couple months before Revis would likely be a free agent. This is why it is tampering. Conversely, even if you twisted Kraft's words into tampering somehow, the timeframe doesn't work: he just signed a 5 year deal with NJ two weeks ago. He's not gaining any further competitive advantage over Revis at this point.
