Schefter: Expect Harsh Punishments if wrongdoing found in NFL investigations

There is no precedent for more compensation than a third round swap (Head coaches are different animals and were considered trades.). As for a higher swap, I'll believe it when I see it. The fact is the rule doesn't state punishment requirements. As such, it's just as likely that any additional penalties will not accrue to the Pats (different but similar to the limits on compensatory picks) and will just be forfeiture or, more likely, a massive fine. We have to wait and see.

The team that should be the most worried are the Fish. They're going to get squished. In this case, I can see a forfeiture of a 1st and a swap of third rounders AND a massive fine. Here there appears to be direct evidence. This could be the place that RG makes his point 'harshly' and not the Jets.
Actually, going back to 1970, the Dolphins had to surrender a first round pick for tampering with then hiring Shula who was under contact to the Colts. Knowing Goodell's past history regarding the Jets, I would be surprised if the Jets are the one punished rather than the Phin's who allegedly were tampering with Suh. Keep in mind that in all likelihood Kensil is responsible for the so called investigations.

NO chance we get their first straight up

I'm clueless.
What are the details on the Fins tampering? What direct evidence?

There is no direct evidence that the fins discussed actual contract terms with Suh in advance of the 4 PM deadline. Perhaps, the genuinely negotiated the details of the contract in the five minutes it took to make the announcement of his signing.

While I agree that the Phish are an easier target due to the timing of their contract with Suh and am quite confident Go-to-hell would much rather use them to 'make an example'.....

The other way to think about the jesters-pats tampering case is that it really is TWO (INVESTIGATIVE) CASES involving the same player.

Case 1: is the woody tampering that started with his media comments and continued with them releasing potential contract details to the media.

Case 2: is the actual signing of a contract so quickly after the patriots gave up on the option.

I expect the nfl to FULLY INVESTIGATE CASE 2, and then walk away saying - nothing to see here- no evidence of wrongdoing. Then focus fully on the Suh case and just ignore the first case of revis tampering. Then see if they can get away with it.

Of course, if the jesters were as stupid with their phone /email records as they are with everything else, they may box roger-dodger in a corner and he has to take action.

I would love to see something happen to the jesters 1st rndr (can agree with the logic of the comparative damage to the precedent cases), but even if they did decide to go hard on them, the delta between 6 and 32 is so much, I have to think they wouldn't go higher than swapping 2s. The pats are so disliked/jealousy that nfl can get away with that and won't be any outrage (hell, there is minuscule outrage now as it is)

No way we get their #1...but they have a 2nd round pick correct? I think it will be a 3rd..

glm seriously I'm gonna go through all post I've written many times and either liked or like mine over both these clowns. Go ahead now tell me his partner Mortensen is pro Pats. Yeah I thought so.
Can't really understand what you're saying but will you hush up with the Mortensen crap, I'm talking strictly about Schefter. I'll wait for you to give some actual evidence of Schefter showing venom towards the Pats. Now go.

Taking into account the punishments given in previous tampering cases, along with the fact that the Jets are repeat offenders, then add in the fact that the jets signed the player they tampered with, it seems more than reasonable to assume that the Jets are in line to receive a nice hefty punishment.

A swap of first rounders with the Pats and a loss of a lower round pick would be great, but its doubtful Goodell would go that far against his former employer. Therefore we might have to settle for a swap of second rounders.

Then again, would it surprise anyone if Goodell and the NFL continued their anti-Patriot crusade and gave their beloved Jets a slap on the wrist and a stern warning?

1) I agree that the jets should be punished.

2) Where does the rule stipulate that the patriots should receive compensation?
Precedent from two previous cases, the last of which I know Herrdell meted out (swap of third and loss of fifth, re briggs)

It's more than two cases if you include coach tampering - typically, aggrieved parties are rewarded picks.

Also: The deal was announced two days early, there was an e-mail sent internally by the Fins telling people to shut up. That Mortenson and Suh have the same agents. The Fins have reason to be 'nervous'. Reports in Detroit (rumors) were that the Lions nearly matched. Actually, I should've said the evidence looks 'direct', or is highly likely to be direct.

That's pretty much what I was thinkin, probably not goin to happen. With history of 2 franchises from Parcells to BB to Curtis Martin on & on & on with Jets, when BB came to NE I believe Kraft had to give a 1st Rd Pick to Jets. Whether Revis intent was to go back to Jets or not (we know he did) Woody put on stamp on it throwin it out there. That let Revis know that a bidding war could take place and worst/best case senario how you look at it Revis was coming out a winner either way, money wise that is.

I rather not use the Briggs case as the sceanrio was so different than the Revis one. The bears called SF on a trade for briggs, SF called rosenhaus to find out what the contract demands would be, the bears then had a change of heart and decided to sign him long term, an offer was made, Rosenhausl laughed and said SF would offer this and the bears filed charges saying they never authorized the agent contact.

The Detroit case was much more similar as a asst coach mentioned that HE would be interested in a KC player if he was cut. Now an assistant coach has no juice tosign anyone, unlike woody, the player in question was a bottom 53 player and was not in negotiations with the chiefs.
Your sf argument can be just as easily spun on its head. Given they were contacted and it can easily be assumed their actions would be the next logical step in negotiating a deal with Chicago.

So if anything, the Jets are worse, repeatedly, and publicly putting out their strong desire to sign a player currently under contract, playing in the playoffs, and with an option for the next year.

Wood's initial infraction does differ in form, however the blatant disregard for league policy for the second time in one league year ups the ante, so to speak. If it is discovered that further tampering took place (just head to Mehta's twitter and writings around the "legal" tampering period), which can also consist of leaks to media, then a hammer needs to be dropped even harder.

Given the bar has been set at swap of third and loss of fifth (jets don't have a 5 or 6), swap of second and loss of seventh seems reasonable given the blatant, and flippant dismissal of league policy for the second time in the same league year. If it is deemed the tampering continued leading up to free agency, while the Pats were negotiating and determining if they would pick up an option to retain the best CB in the game, loss of first, swap of second, major fine.

Is it heavy handed? Maybe, but with the absurd amount of tampering exceeding what has been deemed acceptable during the "legal tampering period," goody needs to drop the hammer on one, if not more teams (dolphins come to mind as well). as we all know, the current precedent for publicly ignoring a written warning from the league office was previously a loss of first round pick, as well as some of the largest fines handed down in league history.

Time to reclaim the throne Goodell, half the league spit in your face for the three days leading up to free agency. We all know who the most glaring, and blatant example was. Time to open up a can of whoop ass, just try not to **** up your manicure in the process.

I agree with whoever said the people who want their first back it up with facts and precedence which make for a very compelling argument. The problem? They leave out gotohell, who did the tampering, and most importantly IMO who got screwed. If this was the pats that did this a first is the minimum I would expect based on "past infractions". Seeing as the jets are such pillars of society there is no way the defending super bowl champions owners of the best 15 years of consistent football ever who the entire league hates and envies are getting the 6th pick in the draft. While I would be doing a jig of joy knowing how good Bill is with top 10 picks thinking about it is just going to lead to disappointment. I think a far more realistic expectation is a swap of 3rds loss of a 7th and a 250k fine. I could also see getting their second next year. I honestly believe anyone expecting more then that is severly underestimating how much the patriots are hated. I do think if this was any other team gotohell would have no issue dropping the hammer swapping firsts

So the routine goes like this...
// Program to determine punishment for tampering
If (Tamper = TRUE & TEAM = League favored Jets)
{lose low pick next draft + meaningless fine}
else
{Unleash Hammers of HELL}

i just hope the jets don't trade away their picks before goodell comes up with a punishment. there are rumors of rivers going to the jets, and most certainly SD will demand the 6th overall pick in return.

The reports are that the reason Rivers wants out of San Diego is because he doesn't want to raise his kids in LA because he is super religious and he doesn't want to expose them to the excesses of LA. How would moving to NY be any different?

Besides, I think Tennessee has the inside track if he is traded because he grew up only about 90 minutes away from Nashville.

does rivers have a say where he gets traded to (i.e,. a no trade clause)?

Based on other violations, we should expect of swap of third round picks at least, but this case is especially egregious so I would think a swap of second round picks would be in order....and we all know how BB loves second round picks.
