Belichick on Malcolm Butler: Typical BB speak or more?

I have a hard time believing Belichick would let both Revis and Browner go if he had no faith in Butler.. What the heck would he plan to do at CB?
Probably go back to playing zone and get a bunch of affordable competition in camp. They've come close to winning Superbowls with "plan B".

Not really. By any measurable, Revis is bigger and a superior athlete.
Revis
Height:
5114
Weight: 204
40 Yrd Dash: 4.38
20 Yrd Dash: 2.49
10 Yrd Dash: 1.46
225 Lb. Bench Reps:
Vertical Jump:
38
Broad Jump: 10'5"
20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.08
3-Cone Drill: 6.56

Butler
Height:
5096
Weight: 187
40 Yrd Dash: 4.62
20 Yrd Dash: 2.75
10 Yrd Dash: 1.62225 Lb. Bench Reps: 13
Vertical Jump: 33 1/2
Broad Jump: 09'10"
20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.27
3-Cone Drill: 7.20
40 Time Range: 4.62-4.64 (some say 4.4)
Didn't realize Revis was over 200. I found 198 in my search. I never said Butler was a superior athlete. That said, BB has commented that Butlers "Prod Day" stats were way off and that the Pats got much better results when they tested him. I don't think they' published those results. I doubt the kid will ever be another Revis, but he fights for the ball, and his trajectory (stole that from the draft forum) since joining the NFL seems pretty high.

Butler won't be another Revis, but there's no reason why he can't be another Asante Samuel, and that's pretty damn good. His size, athletic ability, ball skills, and small-school background all match up similarly to Asante.

The numbers I published were from the Alabama Pro Day. The 4.4 he ran was in Foxboro.

Yep. You did not say he was a superior athlete. I did. I just threw out the measurables as a reminder to anyone who questions how gifted Revis is at taking his physical abilities and applying those to his game.

Butler is a very good athlete too. Hes also a film junkie. There are plenty of top-CBs who have Butler's physical abilities that are able to translate those to Game Day. Just gotta see how MB does with a heavier workload and vs all different kinds of receivers...tall, short, fast, big, quick, etc. Some he may be able to handle. Some he might need help with. I think BB will give him the shot to show what he can do.

Butler = 5'11", 190lbs
Revis = 5'11", 198lbs

Size will not be the thing that holds Butler back.
Butler is not 5'11

I don't think anyone is saying that Butler is the next Revis. Only that he is the same height. That at least is something you can compare.
But then who would have thought Edelman was going to be what he is today. Aside from BB that is.

I was always a fan and thought The Squirrel would be an adequate replacement for WWW
I did not think he'd be equal or possibly better

{Raises hand}

Yeah, there was a small contingent of Edelman fan on this site, I always felt his only issues were injuries, and if he could get over that, he would be a very good player.

re: Butler height

He did signings at a verizon store in Boston last Saturday. Standing near him, he's either 5'10 or a shade under 5'10.

He seems to have hops in game though (the miracle Kearse catch). I'm not sure if his height will prevent him from being a CB1.

Butler is not 5'11

He's listed as 5'11" on the Patriots website. Not saying that's 100% accurate (none of these listings are), but he's at least close enough to Revis' size that to link his potential to his height is laziness IMO.

I love Butler but he's going to be limited no matter what because of his size. He's at a disadvantage with all the huge athletic outside WRs these days.

Revis is the same height. Technique and timing your jump are more important than a couple of inches.

Yeah, he's no Ellis Hobbs. He's probably right around the average for corners in terms of size. Ty Law was only 5'11" as was Otis Smith. Asante was 5'10". Guys like Browner, Sherman, or Patrick Peterson - that is, corners who are taller than 6 feet and can actually play - are exceedingly rare. It was enough to make Chad Scott a passable commodity as a starting corner for about a decade.

It's actually something Pete Carroll talked about last offseason after they won the Super Bowl. Someone asked him in an interview whether teams were going to start copying the Seahawks blueprint on defense now that they were so successful, and his answer was (in more Pete-like words), "They would if it were that easy to find two 6'3" corners who can run."

McCourty/Butler will be our starting CB duo. Book it.

Comparing him to Revis is laziness.
