Patriots pick up some draft picks (compensatory 3rd & 7th)

Ok so now we have what , 9 picks?

With the #6 from the Jets we can trade down and get another 3. Is there space for another team in NFL? Kraft could field a Patriots B and put Steve Belichick in charge. That team purpose would be to develop our rookies in real games and of course beat the jests twice a year too.

And as it stands right now, the Patriots are in line to pick up three compensatory draft picks in 2016:

- a 3rd for Darrelle Revis
- a 6th for Vince Wilfork
- a 6th for Shane Vereen

The other additions/departures cancel out.

Actually, now a 5th for Wilfork:

There are two changes to the 2016 compensatory picks based on 2015: Vince Wilfork is now promoted to a 5th and Brice McCain demoted to a 7th

Is this true? The descriptions of the "secret" formula that I've seen online say that players that are cut are excluded from the formula. Didn't we technically cut Revis, Wilfork & Browner? Or did we just decline to pick up an option for next year? I'm not really up on all the contract details - just wondering how accurate all the stories are about us getting a high comp pick next year really are?
Technically the Patriots declined the options for these players, as opposed to cutting them.

There is precedent (Stallworth) that when a team does this, it does not figure into the compensatory formula.

On a side note, I fully expect next year that the NFL's competition committee deems that the Patriots have found an unfair advantage, and they push for a rule proposal that the league treat declined options to be be the same as a player being released in regards to the compensatory draft picks formula.

Accurate

Moved down 12 picks for Ayers, and 9 picks down for Casillas with potential compensation in next years draft. How do you all feel we made out with those trades?

considering this is not a deep draft like the previous 2, and considering they contributed well in a championship season, I'm not even mad.

Since the 97th must be used, how much do you wanna bet the 96th gets moved ?

The last two times NE had consecutive picks, both were used (Butler/Brace in 2009 and Ridley/Mallett in 2011).

I think the Pats love being at #32 that player wont get a contract that strains our cap. Also they will be some pretty good players in Round 2 not necessarily at #64. So 64 and 96 get us somewhere Mid Second Round we would still have a Third and Two Fourth's and their is not much room in the Inn.

Or they're getting better at it............

No doubt. Ridley and Mallett were both very useful players for us. And assuming Ridley eventually signs somewhere, we might still get a compensatory pick for him.

Lets say the Patriots covet a Particular Player in the First Round. Where does 32 and 64 get us in Round 1?

I have no idea what I'm talking about, but probably into the early-mid 20s at best. I say this because off the top of my head, if you want to move up just a couple picks in the late 1st, it'll cost a third or a fourth. 64 is essentially an early third, so we could probably move up more than a couple spots, but nothing gamechanging.

Accurate

- a 3rd for Darrelle Revis

Accurate?????

Until this post, there was always a question with regard to the final calculation of compensatory picks. Miguel has never indicated that he could "accurately" determine our compensatory picks two months before the current draft. He certainly doesn't forecast them a year in advance. Even adam will only give an estimate.

SOME THOUGHTS
1) Few understand the exact formula.
2) There are signings in the last FIVE months of free agency that could affect next year's compensatory picks.
3) Contract and playtime detail could affect affect the picks.
4) Whether player make their teams will affect the picks.

CONCLUSION
We will be able to make a better ESTIMATE of 2016 compensatory picks after the season starts.

Thanks for the responce guys.

Didn't see a thread about it so figured I would start one. It's reported from several sources that the Pats received the top overall compensatory pick in the third round (#97), as well as a seventh round selection (#253). This brings their stable to...

1-32, 2-64, 3-96, 3-97, 4-101, 4-131, 6-177, 7-219 and 7-253, for nine total picks. While comp picks can't be traded, the others can, so there's a fair amount of ammo if the Pats want to jump up and grab a guy in the second or third. Otherwise, they'll be taking a lot of players in the first four rounds, which is a good spot to be in with the draft depth this year.

I'll leave you with a nugget from our favorite reporter Benny...

#Patriots have 5 picks in the top 100. That doesn't seem fair
Bills, Dolphins, and Jets received NOTHING!
