In a softball interview by Peter King, Goodell seems to be distancing himself from Kensil and/or whoever may have been the ones who might have set up a sting for the Pats:

The MMQB: You know that there’s a storyline out there that you knew about the deflating and wanted to catch them in the act.

Goodell: Let’s just short circuit this a little bit. I’m not going to get into what we knew and when we knew it because that’s part of what he’s investigating. … I can tell you that I was not personally aware of it until after the game.

This is a change from a strong denial of a sting operation from Dean Blandino before the Super Bowl. Goodell refuses to comment on a sting operation other than he personally was not a part of it. Sounds like duck and cover from him.

"The great and powerful Goodell has spoken! Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!"

I noticed that too. Looks like there's gonna be a fall guy. Would be nice if the Pats got some sort of compensation out of the deal, but I sincerely doubt they will.

Did you also notice the complete lack of any reference to tampering of any kind? Don't expect fair compensation for the Pats or a sufficiently harsh punishment for the Jets.

The way he said it almost sounds like a confirmation that it was a sting, but that he wasn't a part of said sting, supposedly. I also find it interesting that later in the interview he says he hasn't spoken with Wells for several weeks. Hmm....

Hard to buy the "sting operation" narrative based on what was leaked

Why on Earth should I trust anything that comes out of Goodell's mouth after the Rice fiasco, which proved him to be a liar?

Not saying you should trust his version of the story as the truth, but I don't know what he would have to gain by affirming the possibility of a sting, and the fact that he hasn't spoken to the man investigating his offices (who would be responsible for that sting) for several weeks.

I don't care about compensation to Pats for Deflategate (I'll leave that to Kraft to fight for if he wants to). I just want the results to be definitive in their exoneration of the Patriots, and worded in a way that the haters can't use it to imply that the Patriots DID do something but the league can't prove it. Probably wishful thinking (haters are creative enough to use anything for their argument), but that's what I'll be looking for.

It seems like it’s been hanging over the league for two months. Was there any thought in your mind to try to get it resolved that week so that it didn’t mar anything associated with the Super Bowl?

Goodell: No. I think the most important thing is to get the right information, to get the facts, and to get the truth. And not to make any judgments until you get that. We have been very careful on that. We followed the facts. We took the information. We determined that we should bring Ted Wells to further the investigation. We haven’t given him a timetable except to be thorough, be fair, and get to the truth. When he’s completed his report, that will be made public as well as to all of us.

BOLD part:
Well, There is a first time for everything. ;)

According to Grigson, he notified the league during the week leading up to the game. Like the Ray Rice tape, this is another piece of information that never reached Goodell.

It seems like the people in the NFL office spend as much time ensuring the integrity of the game as they do making sure the Commissioner is unaware of their efforts to ensure the integrity of the games.

If this turns out to be a failed sting operation that Kensil orchestrated or was complicit in, Kraft needs to demand an independent examination of any adverse actions, taken against the Pats, that Kensil played any role in, up to and including CameraPlacementGate, and adjustments to the penalties where Kensil's anti-Pats bias and activism are concerned.

Someone lied, that much is clear....http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...here-was-no-sting-operation-against-patriots/

Don't hold your breath.. :)

If Goodell actually said this (the last sentence), then this is HUGE news. "We determined that we should bring Ted Wells to further the investigation. I will be very happy if the public gets to see the report.

The only way that happens is if they were somehow able to prove the Colt's actually doctored the ball Jackson intercepted.

Then you'll be disappointed, unfortunately.

How about if Kensil is the culprit?

You may not have a culpable team, but the league could give the Pats a compensation pick.

If the Pats are found to be the innocent victims here, there has to be compensation for the crap the team and the fans had to endure at a time when we had all earned the right to enjoy our accomplishments.

Not really huge news. Aren't pretty much all of these reports made public? Or atleast leaked in their full by someone.

For compensation to be warranted, 1 of two things would have to be proven. The league and/or teams colluded against the Patriots in deflatgate or that any high-ranking members of the leagues office (Kensil) were executing an agenda against the Pats that went back to Spygate.

Even if Wells proves such things, I would be shocked if the NFL made public that part of the Wells report. Unless Kraft an BB personally have possession of any hard evidence, I sincerely doubt the there will be any compensation for the Pats.
