Colts proposed rule change

But how often does a can't miss player like Luck come around? It's rare that the top overall player is a consensus pick before the season even starts (and stays that way) and VERY rare to have a prospect with so few questions. I don't like the idea of a rule change that will punish the truly worst team in football year after year for that one season the next can't miss guy comes along.

It's rare, but when it DOES happen it's a huge risk to the much-talked-about integrity of the game. You can have playoff berths decided by another team purposely tanking.

The NBA addressed this years ago with a lottery. Why doesn't the NFL follow their example? Do a weighted drawing for, say, the bottom 3-5 teams to determine round 1 order, then revert to order by season record for rounds 2-7.

Ya sounds like something a dome team would propose.

But let's get nuts with it. Let's make it if a team goes for 2pt conv. makes it and misses the FG the TD doesn't count and the opposing team gets 3 points and takes over from the spot of the FG.
:D

But then the original team gets to re-decide which end zone they're defending, and if they choose not to reverse directions of the field, the opposing team must do a "punt off" (we don't see many of those and fans obviously think they're a hoot) OR said team gets a single down with which to decide to either attempt to get a first down OR make their own field goal attempt. Please note that these plays are all un-timed (but have commercial breaks loaded in at every opportunity).

PS - I think we can agree that seeing head coaches stumble their way through strategies here would be entertaining as hell. Post game press conference: "Coach, can you explain your decision making with the post TD, post 2 point conversion FG attempt? Were you even aware of what the score was at that point in the game?" "uh... I took the wind? Liked the kicker's pregame warmups toward the open end of the... uhhh... stadium?"

Of course they did. But if that came from some other coach the vote at worst is 5-4 in favor.

And Mara's reasoning for why not to go through with it seemed confused at best. There are many ways to write the rule so that you're not rewarding the behavior of "throw a challenge flag after any big play."

EDIT
And the whole cost related argument against sideline cameras is laughable. Take the revenue from Joe Nosebleed's season tickets and buy yourself a dozen Go Pro's. Or bake sale / car wash :)

On top of this insane rule, every time the kicker makes an extra point they get to kick again but an additional five yards further. If the kicker makes it from 65 yards out he is awarded a silk robe and Cuban cigar to wear and smoke right there on the field. The game will be stopped until said kicker is finished smoking the cigar.

Hope he was kidding.
well the dolts do they play in a Dome, obviously its a lot easier to kick from that distance. But still a dumbass. crack pipe kind of idea.

Absolutely ridiculous proposal

Love this idea because it increases the importance of the kicking game. And that's always been the most exciting part of the NFL.

I also think all tie games should be decided by a sudden death kicking duel similar to World Cup soccer or the NHL.

This is the quote that stood out for me

So in other words being smarter than your colleagues and having a deeper, more profound knowledge of the game, it's intricacies and rules is frowned upon. Ingenuity is not to be encouraged as it creates an unfair advantage to the clever folks, even it is 100% legit and within the rules.
Yep. It's just like the game survivor. The strongest player is always voted off first by the weak to allow the weak a better chance to win. NFL coaches are no different.

Except it did happen when it just so happened the #1 pick was a sure-fire Hall of Fame quarterback and the Colts will reap the benefits for the next fifteen years.
I'm not sure I even really buy that story that the Colts tanked. If someone wants to post some facts and what not if they can find them I'd like a good discussion on this to prove me wrong. But, Cardwell and Polian lost their jobs, why would they tank if they were going to get fired? Not to mention Painter got benched for sucking, why wouldn't they stick with him if he was playing so bad and they wanted to tank? Just trying to be rational here. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

I think that every Sunday Goodell should be chained to a set of iron rings set in cement with his legs spread and every time there's a TD a kicker comes out and kicks HIM right in his puny little nutsicles. Then the rest of the week he can brag like the jackass he is that he's got these "big balls!!"....azzwipe

If I recall correctly the Colts had three quarterbacks on that team: Kerry Collins, Dan Orlovsky and Curtis Painter. Collins was by far the best QB of the three even though he was over the hill - but they pulled the plug on him after just a couple of games, the last of which was a very close loss. At this point it seemed apparent they weren't going to make the playoffs, which seemed to be the impetus for that change. Orlovsky was the next best QB but the Colts instead decided to make Painter their new starting QB. Orlovsky didn't get in there until near the end of the year (perhaps after an injury?)

There were IIRC some other debatable personnel moves too, but the decisions at QB were as I recollect the most questionable.

Collins was indeed great but was way, way, beyond his elite years due to being over the hill.

That Cowboy touchdown needs to be fixed and yet the proposed change does little to change it. The change is the receiver must establish himself as a runner. So Bryant still would not get a completion from that pass. Maybe someone can explain it better???

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/eye-on...h-rule-says-dez-bryant-still-didnt-catch-ball

"For years the requirement for a catch is control, both feet and after that the receiver had to have the ball long enough to perform a [football] act," VP of Officiating Dean Blandino said. "It was that act common to the game, football move, that created some confusion."

So instead of needing to make a "football move" to qualify oneself as a runner in the field of play, the receiver must "clearly establish himself as a runner."

In other words, the goal is to make it a simple deduction whether or not someone has made a particular kind of move to establish themselves as having possession.

Just my opinion, but Dez Bryant made a dumb decision on that play. Secure the ball and make sure it's a catch - above and beyond anything else. There was no reason to stretch out for the goal line at that point; a reception gives Dallas a first and goal close to the goal line, with plenty of time and four downs to score.

Overlooked in the discussion of that play is that Bryant completely forgot (or didn't care to think of) that specific situation. Extremely poor situational awareness.

Perhaps if he and other receivers took that situational awareness into account we wouldn't be having this discussion.

I'm actually for it.

Then we can add an upper cross bar making it a rectangular hoop. Then we can set the hoop on fire. Then the kicker can put his head in a lion's mouth.

The possibilities are endless.

I got more ideas but I have to find my crack pipe first.

Well that's how Irsay comes up with his.

It just never ceases to amaze me how depraved and utterly bereft of morals the NFL offices heirarchy is...

He is the only millionaire who somehow manages to look physically worse than most homeless people.
