In the patriots championship video the announcer said that "most people have never heard of Malcolm Butler, the man the Patriots call Strap." Does anyone know where this nickname came from? I thought it was a cool name and was just curious.

Scrap -- not Strap -- because he's always scrapping for the ball.

Does he have a nickname?

Butler was dubbed “Strap” shortly after signing with the team, though it has morphed to “Scrap” in some corners. ESPN explains:

Butler picked up the nickname shortly after signing with the Patriots on May 19, after teammates noticed him putting the “straps” on receivers on the practice field. Running back Brandon Bolden said he came up with it, and some teammates turned it into “Scrap” because Butler was always scrapping for the ball.

i could have sworn the announcer in the video called him "Strap", so I'm not hearing things. His nickname is both"Strap" and "Scrap" according to this article.

I heard "Scrap" was short for "Scrappy Doo" as a reference to the Scooby Doo character that was little in size but could fight with the big dawgs.

*I completely made this up.
