Patriots vs Colts 2007:

Fast forward to 2 hours 48 seconds. Brady just hit Stallworth for a huge gain. Belichick clearly pissed at McDaniels about something. Could Bill actually be angry at josh for the offense not burning more clock on the drive? Before you all label me crazy, remember this was 2 years before the 4th and 2 game so take conventional wisdom and throw it in the trash. This is Manning in his prime. Thoughts?

Nice find, good post.
"Clearly Pissed" though? Agreed BB is not happy, however, the reaction is muted enough that this could simply be the general heat/tension of the final two minutes of a very tight game.

3 PI's called on us: 2 DPIs for 77 yards. The first one was a bad call, but the second one was worse, as the defender was in perfect position and looking back ahead of the receiver, still dont know how they called it a penalty. Later in the second half Faulk gets pulled, which forces a drop.... but no call - Brady understandably heated in calling it out to the refs.

Adding insult to injury the refs called OPI on Moss, when it looked more like it should go the other way. No straight arms from 81. Even Simms and Nantz (hardly impartial as ever) were mystified by the call. I know it was in Indy, but a balanced set of judgement calls from the men in stripes it was not. At the end Colvin spikes the ball after the win-sealing fumble recovery and is slapped with a delay of game penalty. Turned out to be a franchise record day for most penalty yards.....ouch

The Polian effect was at full strength from 2006-2009. Somehow Indy fans never seem to mention this if talk of the 2003 AFCCG ever comes up.

Welker at 2:11:47: "You ****ing suck!"

I always remember that from this game. :D

lol, awesome. Forgot about that. I'll always love Welker!

Wow, the offensive line really did struggle against those edge rushers. Brady was harassed all game and had to release the ball in under two seconds on almost every snap.

Manning has never lost a game when it was his fault. Just ask him.
Those Colts defense never got nearly the credit they deserved. They had some really good pass defenses. Hell in 08 they only gave up 6 touchdown passes. Impossible to do today.

That can't be right because all I've heard for years is that Manning has carried this laughing stock team on his shoulders, only to heroically fall under impossible weight in the postseason. Heck, even this year I saw someone point out to the difference between Brady and Manning by saying "look at their teams." The Broncos had nine pro bowl players this season. If only Manning could find even an average supporting cast at some point in his career, he would go 19-0.

Just re-watched the end of that game, man I miss Rodney and Rosey. Nobody ever talks about Colvin but man did he bring some attitude. He hated the Colts and tweets to rag on Peyton all the time. If he didn't get hurt vs Philly maybe the season ends on a high note. Oh well..

It's pretty incredible we won that game, most poorly officiated game I have ever seen. Absolutely disgusting.

The 2006 AFCCG might have been worse. So many bogus PIs on 3rd and goal they gave the Colts that gave them 4 extra points.. and then on the flip side Troy Brown gets mugged in the endzone and they call an OPI, derailing the Pats drive and forcing them to kick a FG.

There were a lot of penalties that resulted in direct point swings in that game, every single one in favor of the Colts.

All the Patriots got were letters of apology from the front office for making incorrect pass interference calls. Not joking, I know Ellis Hobbs got a "we're sorry" letter and I think someone else too. . I think both were 3rd down plays that gave the Colts another set of downs from the 1 yard line instead of kicking field goals... and we all know how that game ended.. in the final minute the Colts scored a TD and went up by 4, so Brady needed the whole field for a TD with 1 minute to go

I'm not huge on conspiracies but I think the NFL wanted to see the Colts make it past the Patriots to go on to the SB, which the Colts won to give Manning his first and only championship of his career.

Goddamn, watching this video really highlights how much Manning's arm has diminished. He used to have a hell of an arm.

I had forgotten how the officials used to have their mouth on manning's nuts. Such bogus PI calls, they tried to give the colts that game. Same as they gave the colts the AFCG in 2006 with that "face guarding" PI call on Hobbs, when it wasn't illegal to do so. Ugh, such an incredible year only to end in bitterness.

Brady's zip back then was just insane. Sometimes the ball is hard to see it's going so fast.....like trying to find the puck while watching hockey. It's amazing to see Brady in his prime---just damn scary.

Another guy that gets lost in the 07 run was Maroney---kind of a love hate thing with him and fans. I actually thought he was a vital part to that team's success that year. He was huge in that AFCCG against the Chargers. Such effortless running and catching out of the backfield---amazing in open space. Too bad he couldn't be committed to football that long.

I've only followed the Pats for two seasons so I thought it would be fun to see an older game. I now see that letting opponents score right before the half with a stupid play is a tradition.

The pass interference against Hobbs on Wayne early in the second is perfect evidence to show how corrupt and illegitimate this league can be sometimes. Especially with Manning.

I'm wondering if someone can confirm 100 percent, but if I recall correctly I believe that this was the play where the NFL later issued an "apology" to the Pats and Hobbs, stating that they got the call wrong.

The NFL did release an official apology after that game. A quick search didn't bring up the official release by the NFL, but I did find this:

That was the 2006 AFC championship if I recall correctly

The funny thing is, the Hobbs letter - which was the only one that was formally acknowledged by the BTW - was the least impacting of the game changing calls. Even without it, it was still 3rd down in the red zone against a gassed NE defense.

Negating a Ben Watson first down on the 18 already up 21-3 with an OPI call against Brown that was really DPI? Or allowing Bethea to tackle Reche on NE's last FG drive before the ball had even entered the screen? Those were embarrassing.

I don't think it was a league mandate or anything (though that guaranteed "first SB winning black coach" narrative was awfully tasty) but the officials were so bulldozed by Polian that they might as well have been. If it were any other team but the Patriots, that game would have gone down as one of the great shams in NFL history.
