Best DL BB ever coached

I'm a big fan of Seymour but imo Wilfork had the better career. It's a shame things went south between Seymour and Belichick because he had a really good shot at The Hall before he he was sent to the black hole.

I think Wilfork had the more consistent and thus better career. Seymour had some crazy peaks. Both have completely taken over games in their own right though. Wilfork's playoff game against Baltimore in 2011 sticks out as one of those games.

Richard Seymour's 2003 season was JJ Watt-like (especially given how different the game was back then). Seymour also had incredible 2006 and 2008 seasons but we try and forget those seasons.
I'm a big fan of Seymour but he was never as disruptive as JJ Watt.

really? I admit I was just a kid in 03 but I dont hate on big sey. 2008 I remember he was unstoppable.

I wonder if chandler jones has this same issue in perception. He is not really impressive in the eye test.

He is really not impressive in any test. His midseason absence last year was basically unnoticed, as was his return. I would love to see the Pats sign Hardy and trade Jones. I have no idea what his return would be, but we would be automatically upgrading the position while helping the DB situation as well.

I would also love to see the Patriots go after Poe from the Chiefs or Liuget from the Chargers next offseason.

I agree with you on his performance. It also seemed like he's not very disciplined setting the edge. But I wouldn't touch Hardy with a 10 foot pole.

At their absolute peaks, I'd probably give the edge to Seymour, but Wilfork's peak lasted for a lot longer, so I'd give him the overall edge. I think people around here have a tendency to forget exactly how good Seymour was.

"I understand BB is one of the best coaches of all time, and he is a major reason the Pats have won three Superbowls, but every coach's time runs out. Based on the remaining schedule, I can realistically see 6-7 more losses this season. What happens if the Pats finish 9-7 or 8-8 and miss the playoffs? Does a new coaching staff even warrant discussion amongst ownership? This is his 11th year which far exceeds avg coaching stints in the NFL, but is it possible his offensive and defensive philosophies have become too predictable?"

"I know this is a very unpopular thing to say, but I firmly believe the Pats would be a better football team right now with Matt Cassel at QB. Brady's long admired accuracy and pocket awareness have been missing this season. I recorded the Ravens and Broncos game and have watched both several times, and Brady missed many open receivers that would have kept drives going or scored TDs. I don't know if anyone has noticed or mentioned it, but Matt C has almost the exact same QB rating with 1 more TD than Mr Brady. He is doing that with a patchwork OL and a horrendous WR crew"

"I know it is crazy, but I cannot, with 100% confidence, say I am totally happy we traded Matt C and kept Brady. I think about what he would have brought NE in a trade, combined with the progress Matt C showed last season, and I can't help but be curious about how strong of position this team would be in moving forward"

No love for Ron Brace?

Jones needs a more diversified set of pass rush moves and be a bit stronger vs the run to become elite.

From 02 to 06ish, Seymour was nasty in every way.

According to Borges, you guys are giving Seymour waaaaaaaaaaaay too much credit.

"On a day when they could have had impact players David Terrell or Koren Robinson or the second-best tackle in the draft in Kenyatta Walker, they took Georgia defensive tackle Richard Seymour, who had 1 sack last season in the pass-happy SEC and is too tall to play tackle at 6-6 and too slow to play defensive end. This genius move was followed by trading out of a spot where they could have gotten the last decent receiver in Robert Ferguson and settled for tackle Matt Light, who will not help any time soon."

Anyways, Seymour turned into more than Borges could have possibly predicted. I guess he might concede he was a better pick than Koren Robinson. Maybe.

I still take Vince over him. He was unselfish and did the dirty work, but could play DE too if he had to. Heck, there was a time I wanted him to play corner. He was an incredible athlete and teammate.

Seymour was great too, although he rarely played a full season for us. Only twice in his 8 years as a Patriot did he play all 16 regular season games, missing an average of 2 games a season. He was also up and down more. I feel like Vince was more consistent.

Both were great, but I think BB is right about Vince being the best he ever coached. He's a first-ballot Patriots HOFer and belongs in the football HOF as well.

To be fair, that injury history came largely from a shot that he took to the back of his knee playing as a goal line FB. I don't think he was injury prone so much as he took one freak injury playing out of position in a niche formation, and it persisted for the following few years.

I'm just mad the Patriots took Seymour when they did.

On a day when they could have had impact players David Terrell or Koren Robinson or the second best tackle in the draft Kenyatta Walker, they took Georgia defensive tackle Richard Seymour who had 1 1/2 sacks his last year in the pass-happy SEC, and is too tall to play tackle at 6-6 and too slow to play defensive end. This genius move was followed by trading out of a spot where they could have gotten the last decent receiver in the draft Robert Ferguson and settled for tackle Matt Light, who will not help any time soon.

Just my humble opinion.

Lmao

Was that iapatsfan?

Career interceptions: Wilfork 3, Seymour 2. Big Vince by a nose! Nobody passes on Wilfork Island.

I don't know if we can conclusively say it persisted or not. But FWIW, he only played 16 games 1 out of 4 seasons before the 2005 injury, and the year after, he played his 2nd and last full season for us. He'd end up playing 2 of 4 full seasons for the Raiders.

I'm nitpicking here, I admit. He had 3 other seasons playing 15 games, 13 his rookie season, another 12 before the injury at fullback, so it's not like he missed huge chunks of the season. But Wilfork was definitely a bit sturdier overall throughout their careers, and I think that matters in BB's mind when figuring out which DL was the best he ever coached. I think that's why Tom is so reluctant to even take a series off in a blowout and wants to play every preseason snap, take every practice rep, run every single drill possible.

I'll just guess it was iapatsfan, judging by his other posts they are probably only 1-2 other people that idiotic who post here.

I thought I implied it was, so you don't have to guess.

Well, word is that the human head transplant is only two years away so all is not lost for iapatsfan.
