BB's proposed rule changes: all plays reviewable; goal line cameras; PAT moved back

Karen Guregian with a nice op/ed column today on the subject.

NFL's try to squash Bill Belichick's ploy is pointless - Element of surprise is why Patriots used play | Boston Herald

That ship has sailed, hasn’t it? The cat’s out of the bag on that Belichick trick. Or it should be. The 31 other teams in the league should be ready at all times for the eligible/ineligible player tactic. If they’re not, shame on them.

The beauty of Belichick doing it in January was the element of surprise, knowing it was within the rules, and catching the Ravens off guard. His team was behind, and he was trying to find a way to turn the game around and put doubt in the opponent’s mind.

. . . . . . . . . .

Once again, if Belichick were able to create the same kind of confusion with the same ruse in the future, it would be stunning. Although, you never know. Some teams just aren’t prepared. That said, if the rule passes, its effect should be fairly negligible.

In the final analysis, Belichick clearly rattled a few cages with his unconventional looks. Can’t have too many coaches or players look so lost during games. But it’s not the first time Belichick succeeded in that quest, and it certainly won’t be the last.

PAT can't be removed... think of the lost commercial time! Never happen. ;)

I thought Belichick put it nicely in his case for moving the extra point back, saying that when the XP was invented it was never meant to be a 99.5% success rate free point. It was meant to be earned, but as kickers got better and more specialized, it became trivial. So the options really should be to A) make it less trivial by moving it back, or B) just make the extra point automatic unless you want to gamble for the two points. I'm in favor of A as I don't like these weenies getting free points.

What about making kickers do the Flutie drop kick for the extra point?

I don't know about this idea. I envision high revenue teams (Dallas, Washington, etc.) circumventing the cap in this scenario, making it that much more difficult for low revenue teams (Jaguars, Browns, etc.) to compete.

I agree--cap should stay as it is. Football is the one sport with a real cap, and it has worked great.

Found it: "Throw the flag, Bill" at about 1:53 here: .

Don't like 3 at all. Just leave the PAT alone. I don't want bad weather games decided on PATs. Not sure what 2 actually does and one is great

Um, you mean you have NEVER seen "we can't be sure of this angle but it looks like he crossed the goal line" replays? Number 2 does away with that.

It isn't automatic. Vikings lost a crucial game to the Bears on a PAT that cost them homefield advantage vs the Saints in the playoffs (a game they barely lost). Bengals missed a PAT in 2006 in Denver that cost them a playoff spot. How is it a huge injury risk? Players rarely ever get hurt on PATs. Just because Gronk got hurt once doesn't mean it's a huge injury risk that's just absurd. We're trying to find solutions to a problem that doesn't exist.

1) I still can't get over you not understanding the issue addressed by goal line cameras and frankly everything else you post is suspect. It shouldn't be, but I'm tired and can't control it.

2) The fact that in 4 years you got two examples... excuse me, 8 years ... is kinda making the point of your opponent.

Thanks for explaining the camera issue in a kind and polite manner. While the vast majority of posters here are awesome there are a few elitist jerks on here and I'm just glad you aren't one of them. Thanks again.

Looks like the camera proposal is going nowhere:

"I’m not optimistic that one gets passed because every stadium is configured differently," Mara said. "To construct camera locations and whatnot, I just don’t know if there’s a need to do that."

Could you come up with a lamer objection, Mara?

Interestingly, Mara also said BB's PAT proposal has some real support this year, though probably not 24 owners' worth.

Remember, this is a league befuddled for months regarding the HS physics of temperature vs pressure

Makes me wonder if anyone in his family can use this to show he is mentally incompetent or something.

If I was Kraft I'd install go pro cameras in the right places. (On the seat wall or whatever) and next year show him the $500 bill. And make Nikon (or whomever makes those) the official goal line camera of the Patriots. Then show Mara how he charges for that.
