Anyone else think Gronk and Chandler will wreck the league?

I don't know if I THINK they'll wreck the league. I sure hope they do, though....

Andy, once I read your post; I immediately thought - but how could you insert Wright into that Gronk-Chandler mix. Be great to hear your thoughts on how they could use 3 TE set (i would think Wright in backfield, but you seem to imply you think Gronk would more likely be back there in that situation).
.
I don't think you do. Wright is the back up. If he is in he is the move TE and the other guy is on the line.
Wright is just a reserve player IMO, not someone you create a bizarre scheme to get on the field. On the goalline, we can use all 3.

Hard to get excited about the offense when you know the opposing offense is just going to march down the field and score for the win in the final 50 seconds of any playoff game anyway.

Is Chandler a lock to make the roster? Could Hooman, with his experience in the system, beat him out for #2?

Yes he is a lock, and no Hooman will not beat him out. Expect Chandler to play somewhere between 60-75% of the snaps.

People here are really UNDERestimating the effect that adding a second 6'7 260 lb behemoth target with proven starting caliber skills to the middle of the field can have on a Brady-led offense.

When defenses put all their focus on stopping Gronk and Edelman over the middle, who's gonna be left that can compete with a 6'7 TE who's already proven he can give you 50 catches a year despite absolute garbage at QB in Buffalo? And even if they do somehow find a guy that can defend someone with that type of size advantage, who's gonna be left to be able to compete with LaFell, or Dola, or even versatile Tim Wright?

I could care less if Chandler can block, we already have Gronk and Hooman who are both great blockers for that. I want a guy who is simply too big to cover, and too hard to match up with when there's already so many other targets to try and stop on our offense. That's what Chandler is to me.

Does he have the same skill set as Hernandez? No, but he doesn't have to be the same type of player in order to have a huge impact.

I'm all in on wrecking the league on offense, until I see otherwise.

I think there's a lot to be said for efficiency in converting drives to td, and it's kind of a hidden stat, buried under stuff like yards and catches, etc

if chandler does nothing but increase our td efficiency from inside the 10 it can be a pretty huge addition.

Well.....

OhOh is apparently still on the team, so that should mean that he got his $300k bonus. That doesn't guarantee that he'll make the team, but it certainly would seem to be a strong indicator (Miguel agrees, FTR):

So, unless the Patriots are going with a 4TE roster this year, Mr. Wright would seem to be in a precarious position, at the moment.

I just wanted to follow up on this a bit, because the numbers are interesting to me. The following assumes that there was no unknown cut of OhOh (certainly not likely after all these days), and no unknown agreement to defer/eliminate that $300k bonus:

OhOh now has $300k invested in him for this upcoming season. The rest of what he's owed v. what Tim Wright is owed (if they make the team), in base salary:

OhOh - $800k
Wright - $585k

The bonus OhOh was already given is more than the remaining base salary difference between the two players ($215k). OhOh still has the $400k roster bonus and some LBTEs, though, so there's some potential financially driven 'drama' here.

1) Yes.
2) Unlikely, but possible.

Gronk's 40 yard time is 4.68 and chandler is 4.78. That's pretty fast for TE.

I think they will, but also, Gronk and my three year old daughter could wreck the league as well.

hooman seems like the odd man out.

belly's getting the scissors ready for cuts.

In the red zone, two tall tight ends will be tough to handle.

In the open field we have gronk, chandler and Edelman all working underneath and crossing routes. Could get congested.

If we line up gronk and lefells outside the numbers, chandler at tight end on gronks side , Blount at rb and Edelman in the slot, then defenses will get nervous because we can run or pass out of that line up with ease.

The Angry 4 TE set. Don't forget we re-signed Develin. Put him Gronk, Chandler and Wright out there on the 2 and watch the opposing D piss their pants.

Those two really have the potential to completely neutralize a duo of Revis/Cromartie.

Exactly. And you saw a preview of that offensive scheme in the Super Bowl, against an opponent that also had at least one dominant CB

Did we target and test Sherman? No.

Did we need to? Nope. You saw a lot of short, low risk passes that kept the ball moving forward, and really making the CB less relevant.

Belichick always seems prepared for these copy cat moves as other teams emulate his previous season's victory, and adjust his following year's team accordingly

Chandler is no Hernandez athletically, but he is freakin' huge and will certainly be a viable threat opposite Gronkowski.

What I'm curious about is whether the Patriots intend to move Wright to WR, or if they still want him to work on improving at TE. Then what? 3-TE sets?

Seems to me that Chandler is what would be closer to the WR/Hernandez role than Wright

Chandler has more receptions (47 and 53 in freakin' Buffalo is nothing to sneeze at) and has caught more deep passes than Wright.

Just like Hernandez wasn't truly used solely as a WR, I don't think Chandler will either

No doubt Belichick has quietly put to together the potential here to make the Patriots VERY difficult to defend next season

I'd like to call the Gronk/Chandler hybrid "Rexy's Rectum Wreckers" for the amount of distress they're gonna cause Wonder Warthog's bowels up there in Biffalo.

I definitely can envision more 3 TE short yardage scenarios to maybe minimize the number of QB sneaks Brady does, someone like Wright can easily be forgotten and sneak past the defense on very a obvious running situation, kinda like Dobson did when he beat the Jests for a TD on his first NFL catch.
