Patriots sign RB Travaris Cadet

Cadet has good hands, but he is NOT explosive, not fast or shifty at all. Bigger than Vereen though.

There is a reason I don't coach football, let alone on an NFL team. But disclaimer aside, I've got to say that my first impressions of Cadet on film aren't nearly as strong as those when I first saw Vereen. Would love to be wrong though.

I'm guessing this more about camp competition and depth at the position than any excitement the Patriots have that he will be the new Faulk or even Vereen.
He plays special teams as well. Don't underestimate that aspect.

I don't think White's in the conversation at all, he's not comparable to Cadet, who has actual production under his belt. Whether Cadet can be as good as Vereen, I kind of doubt it. He looks pretty close as far as catching the ball, but Vereen was also a quality runner out of the shotgun. We're just not going to find anyone as good as Vereen, but the way Cadet can make yards catching it out of the backfield, it's the best we're going to do and will probably be fine in that role.
Quality runner? Woodhead was a quality 3rd down runner. Vereen was pedestrian at best. Little wiggle, little power and rarely broke anything. Same with YAC. While his route running and hands were great, he is not all that difficult to replace.

A 3rd down RB should be, needs to be, a threat to run the ball. This guy won't scare up a run threat based on his record, defenses will be able to ignore the run on 3rd and 5. However, he does catch the ball as evidenced by his record. I'm not too excited by this signing. Let's see what happens in camp.

Either Cadet will work out or he won't but will push White to get better. Training camp will be interesting

Bb seems to find a role where a player can maximize his skillet and his value to the team.

Which is why versatility is so important to bb.

It will be interesting to see what role if any cadet can carve out.

Awww now you reminded me of the dearly departed VW again...

But sirrously, good post. One thing... can he rush the quarterback? :)

Training camp fodder or the real deal???, time will tell.. he comes from a pass oriented program, so he should be able to adapt.....

Loved Vereen but he wasn't explosive, fast or shifty either. Saw a stat that had him ranked last in yards after contact.

Vereen's running plummeted this year, and he was still reasonably productive.

I put some combine numbers together for Woodhead, Vereen, White, Cadet and a bunch of other RBs that have been drafted that have receiving skills.. some are big names just for reference/comparison purposes;

Player - Height -Weight - 40 Time - 3 Cone Drill - Shuttle - Vertical - Broad Jump - Bench Press
Danny Woodhead 5'8" 200 4.33 7.03 4.03 38.5 120 20
Shane Vereen 5'10" 210 4.5 6.95 4.28 34 115 31
James White 5'9" 204 4.57 7.05 4.2 32 114 23
Tavaris Cadet 6'1" 210 4.64 6.97 4.21 33 120 16
Sproles 5'6" 187 4.47 6.96 3.96 33 105 23
Bush 6'0" 201 4.37 NA NA 40.5 128 24
Jahvid Best 5'10" 199 4.35 6.75 4.17 35.5 113 18
Roy Helu 6'0" 219 4.4 6.67 4.01 36.5 119 11
Giovani Bernard 5'8" 202 4.53 6.91 4.12 33.5 122 19
Montee Ball 5'10" 214 4.66 6.88 4.4 32 118 15
Tre Mason 5'8" 207 NA NA 4.15 38.5 126 NA
Jamaal Charles 5'11" 200 4.38 6.8 4.22 30.5 122 NA
Ray Rice 5'8" 199 4.42 6.65 4.2 31.5 119 23
Leon Washington 5'8" 201 4.42 6.96 4.37 32.5 105 17
Joseph Addai 5'11" 214 4.4 7.1 4.48 38.5 125 18
I didn't realize Vereen is so strong.

Solid signing. BB will maximize his potential

I didn't realize Vereen is so strong.

He has great weight room strength but it didn't translate to the field, as he was aw
ful with yards after contact.

Something interesting about Travaris Cadet: He has basically no pass-blocking experience. Can't take Vereen's role, but could share it.

Travaris Cadet has seven career regular season pass-blocking snaps in three years with the Saints. Would have to catch on quickly.

I wonder if they think he can pick this up quickly (he certainly has the size). Or, I guess, there's a small chance that they see him as not a 3rd down back but as a WR/RB combo, a less explosive Harvin type.

That would seem to be his major obstacle for playing time if true. Can't read too much into it since he didn't play that many snaps total for the Saints, but his lack of experience in the role is a definite question mark. I can't imagine that Woodhead had many blitz pickup snaps either before he got here, and he chipped in pretty quickly. Camp will sort it all out.

A little concerning but I tend think that an astute HC like Sean Peyton wouldn't let him see the field if he wasn't mostly confident that Cadet could pass block/pickup the blitz with Drew Brees.

To you point, with every system different we'll just need to see how he does here.

One thing is for sure..if he blows an assignment and TB gets crunched, Cadet will be "Grey'd"

Anyone else think that Tyler gaffney could effectively replace vareen? I like this kid

Sounds alot like Vereen!

That's they guy I'm hoping for. I liked him a lot at Stanford. Versatile and a patient runner.

Did anyone else get the feeling, like with Harvin, that once it became known that the Pats were interested in a player, interest from other teams did too?

Like other teams respect what BB does so much that his interests become other teams' interests?

Good job keeping this one quiet BB.

Seriously?
Cadet will be lucky to finish TC on the 53, as will be Chimdi Chekwa, another "stealth" signing
I suppose.
