I'd rather spend a second on a cb and coach him up a la butler. Cheaper too.

Their price tags were reasonable, and not outrageous.

I would say that 3 years @ $16 million a year is not "reasonable" when Sherman signed for $14 million a year. It is quite "outrageous" actually. $2 million a year more than the next highest paid CB in the NFL. You'd have to be nuts to pay that.

Nope!

http://www.rotoworld.com/player/NFL/4317/Tarell-Brown

No interceptions and only 4 passes defensed last season.

I'm not saying any of these guys are world beaters, although i'd give Brown a look, but that's not the point.

The real story here is, are we all to believe that ATippett gets his scouting reports from f***ing Rotoworld? I mean, a site that's entire function is to round up stories that almost solely relate to fantasy sports?

"Hey, I mean if unpaid intern at Rotoworld says he's bad, what other information do I need?!!?"

Nonsense.

My gawd this sounds like our secondary before Revis and Browner!

Brown: below average starting CB
Fletcher: awful starting CB
McClain: nothing special depth CB

I'm a fan of our current CBs more than any of them.

Why don't you research the statistics provided by Rotoworld and then draw your own conclusions about a cornerback in decline?

@PFF_Jeff: Sterling Moore had a +4.9 coverage grade in 2014, did not allow a TD in 498 coverage snaps. Played mostly out wide, could be starter in SF.

PFF sucks, but Sterling might actually be the best CB available. At 25 years old I'm curious to see the $ he's going to get.

I never said any of them were world beaters, but if you think that by simply looking at statistics you can properly evaluate cornerback play, I have a bridge to sell you.

I think it's important to have a veteran CB or two in camp so that the most tenured outside corner on the team (Arrington being primarily slot) is not Alfonzo Dennard, who may or may not have been outright benched at the end of last season. Even if those players end up cut, it's good to have their experience to pass on to the young bucks.

Brown was actually a decent corner on some very good Niners teams recently, if he's healthy I have no problem giving him a shot. Take some flyers and hope one pans out.

Browner is not a #1 corner. I believe we have the personnel to fill the #2 corner position already on the team ASSUMING that we get a true #1 corner. That can only come from a trade. Thankfully that's exactly what we did to get Talib so hopefully Bill sees that and is looking for someone.

I think you may be onto something with this line of thinking, and that it could help to explain the decision (along with the previously mentioned shift back to zone, which would make Browner more expendable).

The one problem with assuming that we'll just go out and sign a guy like Talib is that it very well could end up as a Duane Starks, who cost a 3rd rounder that year. The situation with Talib was perfect for Aqib to resurrect his career in a "last chance" setting, since he was on the chopping block in Tampa Bay. I don't know whether or not Belichick can find another similar situation like that where everything lines up perfectly or if he'll even try via trade, but I think it's going to be more difficult than some are expecting.

The reality is that we may have to go with what's here, while adding in some cheap vet (hence the 4 guys brought in today) and a draft pick. I'm guessing that's what happens, myself.

Here is the bottom line:

Tarell Brown sucks and was is the past tense of is.

Tarell brown will be good again. Patience.

BB has learned from his second round cb mistakes. You'll see.

Deltha O'Neal wasn't available?

what was the name of that corner we had on the roster at the beginning of the year but we just had too many good players so we had to cut him?

i think he was a 2nd year player last year so should be going into 3rd year rght now, and he showed promise in preseason last year...

bring that kid back

Isn't it somewhat reasonable to expect the 2 pacts to be set up differently though? After all, Revis' pact will drop to 11 million a year in the last two years, since they're expecting his worth to decline at he ages. Sherman's was obviously not set up that way, since he's much younger. At the end of the day, they are both making 14m dollars a year AAV. They both received about 40 million dollars in guaranteed money, and they both were signed for five years understanding that Sherman's was an extension. The difference was that the Jets were willing to pay a couple of million more for the first TWO years to make up for it on the back end, which certainly makes some sense when you think about it.

Year THREE (the middle) of the deal already evens out with Sherman's, as they are both counting about 15m against the cap. Years FOUR and FIVE sees Revis' cap hit much less--about the same as Revis' difference in the first two years, which is 2m dollars. The main difference is that the Revis pact is frontloaded due to concerns about his age in 4-5 years down the road, whereas the Seahawks didn't have to take that into account with Sherman, and were able to spread the hits out more evenly.

I'm not disputing the notion that the Jets stepped up to the plate to improve their team, while also making their division rivals weaker, but I think some are taking it a bit too far with the way they're spinning it.
