Stevie Johnson likely to sign with Pats [3/17 update: signs w/ San Diego]

I don't get this reaction by so many here.

We've got Edelman and LaFell, who both fit in here beautifully. We've got Amendola, who showed up big in important situations last year. We've got Gronk, who is Gronk. We've got Chandler, who is a very solid #2 pass-catching TE. We've got Tim Wright, who caught almost everything thrown his way, including a bunch of touchdowns.

And yes, we've got Dobson. People ready to throw him under the bus really should look at the first years of receivers they get all hot-and-bothered about.

I would have been intrigued to see Stevie Johnson here - always liked his game. but like the tweet above says, they were going to pay him to be the 5th option. I don't want Andre Johnson at 3/18...I don't want any receiver here who's not a game changer instead of a complimentary target for any kind of serious $$$. We've got a couple of more important holes to fill and three important guys to extend.

I'm surprised how confident you guys sounds about our current WRs. The three starters consist of two injury prone slot WRs and a WR who is the epitome of mediocre. Is it the team's current biggest need? No, but obviously with the losses on defense the offense is gonna have to kick into gear at a much more consistent level this season. I'm not one to keep shrugging off offensive players we've whiffed on. If Gronk misses any time it's gonna get ugly real fast.

My god. Your perspective is worst case scenario. Johnson won't save you either.

How is Edelman injury prone?

First team in the Sherman era to score four passing TDs in a game.

Grass isn't greener...it really isn't.

Epitome of mediocre? LaFell? And hasn't the "injury prone" label on Edelman been put to rest the past two years? Didn't NE just sign the first real backup for Gronk? And NE was the top scoring team in the entire NFL heading into week 17 last year despite starting September poorly.

You also completely miss the point that NE's offense is run from the inside out.

Man if we weren't coming off being champions this off season I'd be really in the dumps. Not a good offseason so far. It's more of the constant disappointment after disappointments and bad report after bad report. Is any news source credible anymore? ?

Agreed, the championship high is a strong one. Still thrilled beyond belief. I honestly think Belichick knew we were going to lose key guys, and went for it all last year by signing Revis, Browner, Lafell, etc. What I don't think he knew, was that the FAs from other teams he wanted to sign, would prefer going elsewhere. Obviously the lure of being a SB Champion isn't that strong. I'm quite shocked by the amount of guys who decided not to sign with the Pats and went elsewhere.

How is Edelman injury prone?

Edelman couldn't make it on the field is first couple seasons as a Patriot. I believe he had foot issues and surgery on his forearm as well. He's stayed healthy the past 2 seasons while playing WAY more snaps so perhaps his injury woes are behind him, though.

I'm pretty bummed because I really thought he'd be flat out amazing in our offense. The only bright side is that offense isn't our problem so if we're going to miss out on a player I coveted I'm glad it's on that side of the ball.

My point is we don't need a superstar receiver like moss or calvin johnson to achieve our goal.

"We" don't need anything to achieve "our" goal. Every position can be overcome.

That doesn't mean you try to field 53 scrubs and call it a day.

Correct. IMO Two years straight seeing 1000 snaps exempts him from injury prone.

I've seen this in a few places, but it isn't remotely true.

LaFell was a lower mid-tier signing that few were inspired by. Browner was a solid signing, but at a reasonable cost. Revis was a big acquisition, but also at a reasonable cost. He was basically the equivalent of a free agent franchise tag at a 10% discount with the cap hit spread over two seasons. Seriously, if Bill had one of those at his disposal would he ever not use it?

How about selecting a possible red shirt rookie at #29? Or taking a QB in the second? Or not addressing the defensive line at all until after the season began despite numerous names floating around?

Last year was business as usual, with an unusual opportunity. No more, no less.

I was torn on signing this guy to begin with.

I understand why he would go to the Chargers. He will be the #2 WR there and would most likely be #3 or lower here.

I think everyone would but the issue is the Pats can't draft/develop WR's to save their life...2014 was probably the most stacked WR draft ever and we waited till the last round to select that midget from Michigan that's not on the team anymore...

So who is it that you would have drafted on day 3 ? Because I don't see anything that should have been done differently on the first two days.

The #Chargers will pay WR Stevie Johnson $10.5M over three years, source said. He can get to $12M. He’ll be a big part of their offense

Lots of WRs want the ball on a constant basis..diva position. He will be going home and get a lot more touches then he would here. No surprise with his decision

I think we can change the name of this thread now. This REALLY pissed me off for some reason, maybe because that douchebag NBCdiana was so certain Johnson was "most likely to sign with the Patriots", I finally had something to feel good about. Finally something positive in this ****ty offseason, and just like everything else, it was taken away by some other team. This really ****ing sucks. I really thought Johnson would make this offense unstoppable. Also would have given us a BIG target, and also injury insurance for our injury prone receivers.

I don't blame Johnson, but douchebags like NBCdiana and PatriotsSB49 (or 50, whatever the **** he's called) need to stop teasing us with BAD info. The next time either of these 2 morons are right about anything will be the first time. I have a deep seated hatred for those 2, I HATE nonsense like what they tweet, and they are part of what makes twitter bad. False info teasing fan bases. Despicable people.

You should know by now..never..never trust a media report..on anything really

Agreed.

Remember this is the same Stevie Johnson who sent a joke tweet (in rather poor taste) about bombing Foxboro. Plus he's not a big physical outside receiver type of guy, we already have Edelman and Amendola who can do what he does. Don't get me wrong, I would have liked the signing if only because he's had success against Revis before, but I got over this rather quickly. Plus I expected him to choose San Diego, so it wasn't disappointing.

I'm much, much more concerned about our corners.

so stevie got less than DA....

You need to take a break. Every other post from you is *****ing

Guys, the injury prone label might have been put to rest but the way Edelman plays is very favorable to him getting a injury here and there. As a matter of fact he didn't play these 2 last seasons without missing a game, he missed 2 due to a concussion, and concussions are part of NFL injuries.

It's not only about depth, spreading the ball around helps to prevent injuries as your go to guy is not getting 70% of the targets. Also, we say WR1, WR2, WR3, etc.... who is the #1? Laffel or Edelman? I think in Josh McDonalds head is 1A and 1B pretty much. Both are quality starters. Assuming Johnson could pick the system, I don't think he is just depth, I think he is another viable option on the playbook.

Well, looks like he's headed to San Diego anyway.

Edelman has not had much of injury issues over the last few years. I have a feeling much of his injuries early in his career was due to his transition from QB to WR and not knowing how to protect himself from injuries. I think he has learned how to take a hit better than he did earlier in his career.
