Newman=2008 Deltha O'Neal?
Hope he still has something left. Man I was excited to get O'Neal....my god did he get old fast. Dunno how he got into another training camp with Houston.

Polamalu would be worth it just to see Steelers fans cry.

I know PFF is what it is but not watching Newman too much it's the best I can go on and they do seem to think he's been playing well :

"Given how Newman finished his last season with the Cowboys, you would’ve been right to think his career was cooked. But he’s revitalized himself in Cincinnati, posting a +8.3 grade last season and again staying in the positives this year."

Take PFF for whats its worth. Has good info. Good stats. Not the single source of truth but its good to use and cross-reference with other sites and what your eyes tell you.

I think Newman is still pretty decent.

He played 77% of the snaps last year but according to this article from today, he still has a good amount to offer.

I love the stat, "Disrupted Dropbacks"

But again, Newman has been somewhat effective of late. Here's an indication of how:

24.0

That is the number of opposing quarterback dropbacks he's been credited with disrupting the past three seasons, according to ESPN Stats & Information. Among Bengals defensive backs, that ranks as the third-highest total in that stretch. It ranks as 47th among league defensive backs in that same time span.

OK, so those 24 disrupted dropbacks don't look all that great when compared to the rest of the league. But considering the rotations the Bengals play at cornerback, and the fact the position has been one of the most consistently solid spots throughout Newman's three-year stay in Cincinnati, that number isn't too low after all.

Adam Jones leads the Bengals cornerbacks with 33 disrupted dropbacks since 2012. SafetyReggie Nelson is next with 28.5.

What is a disrupted dropback? They are defined as any sack, defended pass, batted ball or interception. Since cornerbacks very seldom come off the edge as blitzers in the Bengals' defensive scheme, and since Newman wouldn't be the first cornerback they would send on such a rare blitz, he didn't have a sack or a batted ball in his time in Cincinnati. But he did intercept five passes and break up another 19.

Patsfans: where posters complain about the Patriots potentially addressing a short term need with a player they aren't keen on.

You can't win.
Gotta have a thick skin around here.

Point well taken.

So who is more "done" is what we're arguing haha

Pretty much. Imo Polomalu should really hang them up, it sucks when a HOF player embarrasses himself.

This would be like the Joey Galloway of corner back signings.

Not comparable. Galloway could never learn the offense. He was also hurt the prior year.

Newman played 77% of the snaps last year, was productive knows how to play man and zone defense.

I dont know him. Is he any good?

Hes old but IMO still pretty good. Hes not elite, but COULD be a good sometimes CB2. Good tackler. Still get his hands on the ball.

Thx. Hope he sign here. I guess if he does and Stevie too we move to Connolly and thats it. Maybe one more LB.

Oh the humanity!!!

Newman is trash now. No thanks.

I haven't watched many bengals games, but seems he performed well with them? wouldn't be bad as a stopgap.

I expect us to draft a CB high as well even if we sign Newman. for all the handwringing, our drafting/bringing in CB's has not been too bad lately. Dennard, butler, ryan have all been decent at CB

Wow, Newman? Man, I do not like that move at all, not even for the minimum

It tells me that the salary cap situation is not great right now. Pats can't compete with teams that can offer big money for good players.

A better defensive back coach could help the younglings. I'm not a fan of the current secondary coach.

I don't get this visit at all. I seriously hope they pass on a 36 y.o corner. If we can't trade a #1 corner hope they play the young players we have and hope to get lucky in the draft.

Someone fill me in, does Greg Jennings basically suck now?

Where is $ on this list of priorities? I suspect it's #1, since he eliminated the cap smart SB contendahs.
