Stevie Johnson likely to sign with Pats [3/17 update: signs w/ San Diego]

It's all relative.

Brandon Gibson will be the #4 wide receiver on the New England Patriots.

Andre Caldwell will be the #3 wide receiver on the Denver Broncos.

Perspective.

Since when did Brandon Gibson even pick up the playbook, let alone beat out the following to secure the WR4 position on the NEP?

Aaron Dobson
Ken Dorsey
Josh Boyce
Expected vet signing
Expected draft pick

That is one hell of an assumption.

More power to Aaron Dobson if he wins the job.

Or the veteran selection they've been attempting to get, which is why we're having this conversation to begin with.

If they were satisfied with Gibson as the WR4, why waste the time to even bring a guy like Johnson here for a visit, while waiting for his "decision?"

Brandon Gibson was brought here to add competition for the final WR depth role, but judging by many different factors including contract and current depth options, he's certainly not anything even close to a lock.

Please sign him and Pierre already. That'd be terrific progress imo at this point with plenty of time to address cb/dt/interior ol

Here come the lamentations from "The only solution is to sign a tall name WR" crowd when he signs with SD. On to the Crabtree and Bowe threads and then the flood of every tall WR we need to use our first pick on or trade up for in the draft.

If Stevie Johnson signs with the Patriots, I promise not to post for a whole week.

The New York Daily News' Manish Mehta reports the Jets have expressed interest in free agent Stevie Johnson, but he's "narrowed his choices" to the Patriots or Chargers.

Johnson has a successful history with new Jets OC Chan Gailey from their Buffalo days, but there aren't a lot of balls to go around in New York with Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker locked in as the Nos. 1 and 2 wideouts. San Diego would be Johnson's clearest path to statistics as the No. 2 to Keenan Allen.

Free-agent receiver Stevie Johnson soon won’t be a free agent any longer.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the former Bills and 49ers receiver intends to pick between the Chargers and Patriots on Tuesday morning.

The source says the Jets received “heavy consideration,” but that Johnson feels good about San Diego and New England after visits on Friday and Monday, respectively.

Joining the Patriots would create even more AFC East intrigue, given that Johnson traditionally has had success against former Patriots and now Jets cornerbackDarrelle Revis. Johnson was cut last week by the 49ers, who acquired him via trade with the Bills last year.

MY GUESS: Patriots...

I'm most concerned with the fact that he's already located on the West Coast and San Diego is a drive away.

he will pick San Diego its close to where he lives.

I do not like his attitude and could care less if he signs here. Just a point to be made for those holding out hope. California has a very high income tax rate 13%. Chargers would have to offer more to make it comparitable.

if he wants to win, he comes to NE
..if he wants to relax/retire..go to san diego ( dont blame him )

I was trying to be positive... But, yeah, He is from west coast and will be the #2 receiver... He would be #3/#4 receiver for the Patriots..

Was Tim Wright that bad last year?

Wright is a move TE, Gronk is a in line TE, different position. Chandler fills a need.

SJ would be an excellent pick up.

Wright didn't do a damn thing last year outside a few touchdown catches, and may not have played at all in the playoffs. He's probably worth giving a training camp to, but he wasn't impressive in any form.

I don't think he would have visited the Patriots if that was the overwhelming concern. Most likely, it will come down to the offer.
