If he couldn't have re-signed with us, Houston was always the next best place. Good luck Vince, enjoy playing with another all-time great!

I hope Vince gets a pick six! (not against us tho)

Man, this makes me feel old. I can remember during that draft, when no one thought he would last til the Patriots pick, and how psyched everyone was when we got him. I believe that was one of the few times when the Patriots sent that card up right up there.

Thank you Vince. A true pro and a true Patriot. Glad you were able to move on to the next chapter of your career as champion. We will see you in the Patriots HOF.

A Texans defense with Watt, Vince and a healthy Clowney could be problematic for the AFC South....

Why the hell did so many teams pass on Vince ? He has been a beast.

DTs have largely been undervalued this year. Suh is a notable exception.

Isn't Watt a TE now?;)

Gonna' be so much ESPN drama this year for the Pats v Texans game with the Brady backups and now Wilfork.

That was a deep draft.

Sorry friend, I was referring to his draft status. Why did so many teams pass on him the year he left college ?

Sad to see VW go, an all time great Patriot I was hoping he would retire a Patriot. Hope he finishes his career in good health.

Some comments on the comments

1. You don't have to go back "several years" to get some vintage Vince. He was elite as late as 2012, when he might have been the best all round defensive lineman in the league.

2. That being said, he didn't play well before he was hurt in 2013. And while his 2014 was remarkable in his comeback from an Achilles injury, it wasn't more than solid on the field.

3. At this point in his career, he's worth more to the Texans than he'd be to the Pats. But most of that $5MM was for his value in the locker room as much as they expect to get from him on the field.

4. Like most I'd rather see him be with Houston than any other team in the league. Some one called it "Patriots Southwest". I like that.

5. I have very mixed emotions when there was talk of him coming back. My heart wanted it to happen badly, while my head knew it was time to move on. I know he would have helped us, if he came back, but he also would have taken away snaps from guys who need them.

6. I also think it signals a fundamental change in our defensive philosophy. Regardless of the alignment, I think our defense is gong to be much more aggressive up front, and the things that Vince did so well, aren't going to be as valued as they once were.

7. There are still some very interesting DT names left in FA, and the draft is loaded with DT's as well.

8. I don't see Vince as a HOFer, but it's less about Vince's accomplishments or lack of them, and more about how the HOF voters seem not to value the things Vince was the best at. He was the best 2 gap NT of his time, and those writers couldn't give a crap about it. As for the Pats HOF - He's a first ballot lock.

It's always sad when a mainstay like Vince moves on even when it's as nice a way as this. I think he deserves the Hall, but voters don't appreciate defensive tackles like they should. But who needs the Hall when the greatest coach ever says you're the best he's ever coached in his 40 odd year career ? Now the question is "who is the 2nd best DL Bill ever coached and is he in the Hall? "

Class act who will be missed in the locker room and on the field. Thank you Big Man for your many years of stellar service and best of luck in the future. One of my all-time favourite Patriots.

I hate that Big Vince is gone. I wish the Pats would have matched the Texans..

That being said, it's going to be interesting to see where the Pats go from here. I think that Siliga will push Branch for time.. The Pats still need a true NT. There really isn't one left in free agency..

Let's just hope Easley is as good as we hope he can be. Right now would be a great time for a sophomore leap.

Not adieu but au revoir, Vince... we'll see you when you retire a Patriot. Vince is a lock for that treatment. Two chances to beat up Indy a year instead of 1... what's not to like?

Do great down there unless the Pats see you again... & godspeed!
