Stevie Johnson likely to sign with Pats [3/17 update: signs w/ San Diego]

most likely, the offense will be too complicated for him to learn so we'll never see him play.

they should also look at ex bills WR, mike williams. lol

Grasping the game has never been an issue for Johnson. His issues have stemmed from immaturity and an inability to focus on the job at hand. Oh, and being charged with the job of having to catch passes from duds at the QB spot.

This would make all the Dobsonites pretty nervous.

They better be nervous if Johnson is signed and Gibson picks up the offense (which is already familiar with as McDaniels was the OC in STL for a year)

I think those 2 signings give an indication of were McDaniels and BB might be going with the offense. Which is a quick pass offense.

Seriously at times last year Pats had only 2 WRs Edelman and LaFell; Amendola was basically non-existent outside of the first jests game and the end of the season. And the 4th and 5th WR was just a rotation between Thompkins, Dobson, Tyms, and Boyce and offered pretty much nothing outside of Tyms 1 catch that was a TD.

Ideally, I hope the WR group looks like this next year:

Edelman
LaFell
Johnson
Amendola
Dobson
* Slater

I really hope he's not just another WR they sign and cut late in pre-season

That would be a good group, although I think Dobson is expendable if we sign Johnson and he doesn't show vast improvement. If the Patriots FO was feeling good about Dobson, I don't think we are even talking to Johnson right now. Typically in addition to Slater, another one of our lower depth WRs also adds something to special teams.

200yds from your #3 WR in 2014 wont cut it in Todays NFL

Did just fine last year. ;)

I'm fine with Johnson's addition, but I think it should be noted that it was health that mostly drove Amendola's numbers down. With Gronk, Edelman, LaFell and Vereen all being active for most weeks, there weren't many more passes to be had. Danny certainly stepped up when the games got tighter and the other guys weren't as open.

Not sure I agree with that one. We basically had two wideouts during the 2014 regular season. Moving forward even if they are high on Dobson receiver is still a significant need.

Amendola was a steaming pile of **** for most of last season.

This is why I tried hard to not be insulting last year at all of the overly excited homers on here who argued the Patriots had their best receiving corps since '07 (with some saying it was better.) Anyone who could be considered a "potential star in the making"- which is like every WR who has ever played- is considered to be a huge deal. Dobson, Thomkins, Tyms, Boyce; these guys are not and were not great players and are vastly overrated by our fan base, much like Tate, Price, Jackson and others before were deemed to be top-secret projects who were ready to go to the Hall of Fame but who BB was saving as secret weapons for the Super Bowl.

Well looks like he isn't signing. Left without a deal

F*ck

The Patriots are the Kevin O'Leary of NFL free agency. They know they just have to get a few great deals to be great investors and pass on anything that isn't a surefire win. So, they just low-ball everyone and hope a few say yes. It really isn't a bad strategy.

just because a player leaves without signing doesn't mean he isn't singing. He has time to weigh his options

Yeah - CJ Spiller was also reported to leave New Orleans without a deal, for instance. This isn't 1985, you don't have to be in the building to sign a deal. Though they still use faxes so...

I'd like him signed, so long as the price is right. We lucked out last year on the injury front, but we can't count on that again this year. If Scott works out at TE, then we're set there. Then WR would be loaded up. The remaining positions are 3rd down back and Guard x2.

3rd down back can probably be addressed in the draft, though that necessitates using a pick on a running back in rounds 2 or 3 and necessitating a draft pick is usually bad - assuming they don't think White is the answer, which is probably a decent enough assumption. Still, though, there are a ton of good candidates in this draft class in those rounds. I wouldn't be surprised if they bring Connolly back on the cheap, though I'd like to see a guard.

Have no issue with the Pats bringing Johnson into the fold....though I'd prefer Shorts or Crabtree

Regardless we need the depth because between inconsistencies and injuries that seem certain we are not very deep at the position just somewhat...wouldn't surprise me if they got a Day 1 or Day 2 wideout from this years class as someone to give Garoppolo to grow with in the offense when he is finally ready to take over

Well that sucks very likely to sign I knew it was BS.
On the other hand Big Vince was said that he wasn't signing with Houston. We see how that turned out.
In the meantime bummed out.

How about some defense
