In fairness to Sopoaga, he was a proven veteran player, which is why he netted a 5th.

In agreement, Ken. A number of posters have felt that with the loss of Revis and Browner, we are back to the secondary of 2011 and 2012. While no can deny that the Pats are definitely weaker in this area, I do not feel that the defensive backfield is as bereft of talent as it was several years ago. A good free agent pick-up, trade, or draft choice would solidify a decent, but not great, defensive backfield.

Who are the starters right now? McCourty,Chung,Arrington in the slot and two question marks on the outside?
I see the McCourty signing as kinda worthless because we can't play man to man.

Here we go with the 10 yard cushion on 3rd down.

I admitted that the defensive backfield would be weaker than last year, but I think that Dennard, Ryan, and Butler are better and have more potential than Bodden, Barrett, Dowling, and Molden, guys we plugged in at the corners in 2011. Both Arrington and McCourty have found their appropriate backfield positions and are considerably improved over 2011. Chung is also improved - not great, but improved.

I think you make a great point that our defensive secondary shouldn't be anything as bad as 2011 (SB loss), but that's also not saying too much when you think about it. Not meaning to be argumentative, just pointing out that the bar was set awfully low with that group of misfits. I think they were historically one of the worst passing defenses in the entire history of the NFL, which proves how much Belichick and Brady can help to overcome weaknesses. That likely goes hand in hand with part of your overall point.

I don't see cause for overreaction, but I can certainly understand why everyone is concerned. At the moment it is a major area of weakness, although I think we all expect it to be addressed. If Belichick could pull off some type of moderate trade and add a mid-high round draft pick, things could potentially look a lot differently.

Ryan had a tough year, definitely down from his rookie year. I wonder how year 3 will go? I have no idea. I think maybe playing opposite Revis is a blessing and a curse. The curse is that you get targeted more, which means more chances to look like a loser...but also more chances to make plays.

I think that could be said at any position on the team though, so we'll have to see what Belichick feels about it going forward. For all we know, it's nothing more than a fantastical wish here on patsfans.

I'm not particularly worried. As a few other posters have stated, one of the fascinating and entertaining aspects of the offseason is the way in which Belichick and the Pats management deal with the challenges of roster turnover - and always manage to produce a team with double digit wins. I might be pretty bored this time of year if the 2015 roster were exactly the same as the 2014 roster.

So where does Logan Ryan go from here?
