We've been talking a lot about guys to bring, but what about the guys already here. Last offseason, I proposed extending Vereen, since he was generally in a "buy low" position and many of us thought he would finally break out. The Patriots, I'm sure, wish they had listened to us, because they probably could have locked him up for 3-4 years and 2.5-3.0M annually.

The Pats have quite a few players who will be free agents in 2016, and it's always a good idea avoiding these free agency situations where they often lose out to higher bidders. Of course, the value has to be there and they need to be sold on the player.

Dont'a Hightower
- Seems to me like a great candidate for an extension because they are not going to pay $13M to franchise him. Hightower is one of the young cornerstones of our defense and has demonstrated great leadership as well.

Nate Solder- Patriots picked up his option and will pay him $7.4M. There have been doubts about whether he's the long-term answer at LT, and the pendulum seems to have swung back to "probably" instead of "probably not." An extension would make sense to lessen this year's cap hit and solidify him as Brady's protector... there are few positions as important as LT when we are talking about stability and the importance of familiarity with the system and offense.

Stephen Gostowski- The franchise tag should be an indication that the Patriots want to keep Gost for a long time. At 31, he still has a lot of years ahead of him. Unlikely they'd apply the franchise tag again, and it's very likely some team will pay him a lot since he is a Patriot. I think he is the top candidate for an extension this offseason.

Ryan Allen- People seem to have mixed feelings about Allen as a punter. We have seen the kicking and punting game make a huge difference in the last two Super Bowls we've played in. Like Gostowski, Allen could expect pretty big money by virtue of teams collecting the Patriots free agents and beating them off the field rather than on it.

LeGarrette Blount- Blount doesn't appear to be slowing down, and I think he realizes he needs the structure in his life that playing for Belichick provides him. I wonder if he'd be open to a 2 year extension for maybe $3M? It is possible, though, that BB would see year 2 as two risky and prefer to take his chances on free agency looking for one more year.

Tim Wright- I doubt the Patriots see the value in Wright at the moment to invest in him beyond this next season. We'll see if he can develop.

Chandler Jones- Patriots have a club option for 2016, so extending him wouldn't make a lot of sense right now. If Jones performs similarly this year as he has so far in his career, it's going to be a tough decision whether or not to pay someone like a top DE when he is at least one step below that class. I have a feeling that Jones will end up being an agonizing decision for the Pats front office. He has played well, just not as well as we keep expecting him to play.

Mixed feelings about Ryan Allen? Why? He's a very good punter and excellent at handling bad snaps. I don't think he's going anywhere.

Before the end of the 2016 offseason if would be ideal for us to extend -

-Solder
-Jones
-Collins
-Hightower
-Allen
-LaFell

I'd rather use Chandler Jones' money on Collins in the future

Hightower needs to be locked up for sure

Definite no for me on Blount. Just draft a guy who preferably has some pass catching ability so they can stay on the field for three downs.

No on Blount. Yes on HT and Collins. Yes on Allen. Prob no on C Jones - though that could change. Sheard/ Ninko coming up soonish too ?

Collins is priority one. Freak athleticism and he finally put it all together this year, while in a starters role.

Hightower right behind him. Mayo isn't getting any younger, and has had a couple unfortunate injuries of late. Also love to hear Hightower played through a tough injury, at a high level, in the superbowl.

Jones I'm undecided on. I would assume he would chase money, given his brothers' careers and success. For top dollar, to this point, I don't think you sign him.

In any case, Collins is priority 1, Hightower 2. Solder seems like a tie for 3. If the coaches really feel he is a top 3 tackle (saying it to the media would be mistake #1), but it would move him into Hightower's range. I think Collins could be locked up at a decent discount before seasons end. I also think he is the most talented, and certainly has the highest ceiling, of the four mentioned.

Collins can't be extended for almost another year, so you can put that one on the back burner for now.

I didn't put him on the list for that reason. However, are you saying he CAN'T be extended or likely won't be extended? I am not aware of any contract stipulations but am wondering if you know of something along those lines.

Patriots did extend Gronkowsi and Hernandez after just two seasons, so they were in a similar boat as Collins this offseason.

Scratch that comment then. It could be my own bias but he doesn't seem to be good at pinning teams back inside the 10... again, I could be wrong and someone may cite stats that he's among the league's best. I just am frequently frustrated when watching him punt from, say, the opponents 45 and either punting it into the end zone or like the 17 yard line. Am I the only one who thinks this?

The three season rule is new in the 2011 CBA. Players in the 2010 (Gronk/Hernandez) class were not affected, but later ones were. Most notably, that includes Russell Wilson, who won a Super Bowl but was not eligible to receive anything other than his $660k this past season. He's eligible now, but Collins' class has to wait another year.

Jamie Collins cannot be extended this season, per the new(ish) CBA signed in 2011. Miguel has confirmed this several times.

Gronk and Hernandez were grandfathered in, since they were drafted prior to the new CBA kicking in. Credit to @ctpatsfans77 for breaking that down in previous conversations.

In all reality, all 3 of those players can be put off for TWO more years. Of course, as we're seeing with Solder right now (my number one candidate for an extension), they'd have the higher cap hit for both of those players next season even though it would postpone another year of seeing them hit free agency.

Hightower and Chandler Jones can both have their 5th year options picked up by May, which would mean that they wouldn't be free agents until the spring of 2017 (with Collins).

Since we can't negotiate with Collins and he won't be a free agent until 2017, he automatically goes to the bottom of the list. My guess is that we'll reach a deal with ONE of Hightower/Jones, while picking up the 5th year option on the other. That would mean that all 3 of them would be locked up through 2017 at the earliest, with the extended player obviously being under contract for longer.

Keep in mind that as we're (hopefully) seeing with Solder at the moment, those higher 5th year option cap hits can be erased with a new deal/extension.

When it comes to Chandler Jones, I wonder if the Pats are pondering trading him for the exact reasons you referenced. If Greg Hardy can convince the Pats' brass that he is a "reformed" man, I like the option of signing him and trading Jones. I imagine Jones would bring some decent value, and we would be replacing him with a better player. I just don't see any upper level contract being justifiable for Chandler Jones. If they decide they're probably not going to retain him, why not trade high if you can be convinced Hardy can be salvaged?
