Justin Houston was given the non-exclusive franchise tender. I know it's unlikely but our first round pick this year is 32 and if we get to the AFC title game again it'll be close to that again.

26 year old top 3 pass rusher in the league give up 2 late firsts for him and it negates a lot of our secondary issues.

Plus if we get a second round swap with the jets from tampering (also unlikely) it would be like trading only next years first round pick for this beast.

How are we going to then sign him, though?

Non exclusive tagged players can sign contracts with other teams , it costs that team 2 first round picks

Good player but I'm not into paying other teams big name players big free agent contracts for short term production, I want to get back to building through the draft and signing depth players in free agency.

You usually don't worry much when the player is of his caliber, but how would he fair making the transition from OLB to pure DE?

2 1st rounders also more than I'm willing.

Can we trade two firsts for Darrelle Revis?

No way. Those draft picks (and cheap rookie contracts) are absolutely essential for building a quality roster under the salary cap. A GM would have to be insane to trade those draft picks for an expensive vet. That would be the kind of move a loser franchise makes.

He's averaging 12 + sacks per season including his rookie year at 5.5 and coming off of a monsterous 22 sack season, for a team with huge questions at CB he might be a move you consider.

He's a beast.

Can you trade for a player under his tag, avoiding the 2x first round pick compensation with other compensation, then extend? Or is it 2x 1st rounders + contract only?

Why?
DE and LB are the biggest strengths on the team after QB.
Giving up 2 1sts to marginally improve an area of strength is crazy.

If they get him, it's either Houston on Chandler Jones. You cannot afford both long-term.

Not sure hes worth 2 #1s...

He's not going to get 22 sacks in a Belichick defense that demands rush lane discipline and setting the edge.

The pass rush is less than mediocre, it's a steep price but we currently have no pass Rush and no pass defenders in the secondary. Id do it to maximize Bradys window the defense effects him too. He played a lot better this year because he didn't have to force things as much.

Lmao. Not only would we surrender two first round picks but he would want a watt/suh type of deal.

Ludacris to think BB would give up 2 firsts plus a 100million dollar contract. And we do have pass rush, Chandler Jones was hurt for half of the season.

If franchised players were worth giving up two first rounders, there would be at least one franchised player who got signed by another team where they surrendered two first rounders in the last five to ten years. The fact that no one does it tells you how incredibly stupid it is to do.

It was slightly above mediocre last year. 40 sacks. Tied for 13th out of 32 teams in the NFL. Considering that Belichick is never going to turn pass rushers loose or do a ton of blitzing, I'd say the pass rush was OK.

Everybody wants a marquee deep threat WR and a marquee pass rusher. Those aren't high on Belichick's shopping list, in large part because they typically represent bad value in the cap department, i.e. teams overpay (because bad owners and GMs think it's the end all and be all).
