Sign the Beast XL: Pats trying to trade for Philadelphia Eagles G Evan Mathis

Mankins was an all pro G that was traded for a mid round pick. Cmon Rich, it was just last season. ;)

Seriously, its not about the amount they have to pay him this year, which I hear is $5MM, but the Cap # which is closer to $8MM, plus the fact that he's 34. It's time to move on, but more from the cap number than the player himself....much like we had to with Mankins..

Plus Chip picked up some pretty expensive contracts recently in Bradford, Murray and Matthews. Guess who would be the easiest to replace. Your $8MM cap hit in your 34 year old OG. They might not be able to replace him 100% but they could get close. We replaced an all multi-time all pro with a journeyman and won a superbowl.

I think it was a smart move by Kelly. One which he's going to get killed for by the media, but smart nonetheless. Hopefully it will benefit the Pats, because at $5MM Mathis would be a short term upgrade and help stabilize an OL that might have had to start 3 very young players on the interior of the OL. Now an OL of Solder, Mathis, Stork, Flemming, and Volmer has the right mix of youth, younger vets and older vet that can work.
For some reason I thought Mathis was younger. You are spot on

Mathis would be a beast of a player for us, strike me as the kind of guy who would make a key block in a SB.

SIGN HIM UP

from most of the stories I read the fish are in the lead to get him

He's not a tall aging name WR. No interest.

so much for this....
we can find better value elsewhere. maybe an UDFA guard from rutgers.

The cap number for Evan Mathis is 6.5m dollars for the upcoming season. Not meaning to nitpick, but he won't be 34 until November either.

I do agree that he may not provide the best value, although he's certainly a major upgrade from Connelly at 4m dollars last year.

I don't mean to nitpick either but.... ;)

.... when he's traded, the team he's traded to is only responsible for the cash Mathis is owed this year, which is around $5MM the difference between that and 6.5 would become dead money on the Eagle's cap. Last year Mankins was an $8MM cap hit to the Pats. TB only had, IIRC a $5 or 6MM hit because that was his salary that year.

I'm not sure I understand this. If Connolly would be a $4MM hit, and Mathis is a $5MM hit, and Mathis would be a major upgrade, why wouldn't we pay "just" a million more for a "major upgrade" at LG Unless we could get Connolly back for $2MM? Is that what you mean.

I just want the Pats to get this guy. Is that so much to ask?

I think I mis-read your statement, and thought you were claiming that Mathis would cost "closer to 8MM." I was simply pointing out the fact that his cap hit was 6.5MM, not 8MM. If we're only responsible for the 5MM salary, then that's even better.

I believe that there is a possibility that Belichick will consider bringing him in. I think we're on the same page here.

Mathis is old. But so was Brian Waters when he signed with the Pats. Waters instantly made an impact with the Pats OL. Perhaps Mathis could do the same. I am concerned about Mathis salary cap hit, but if we spend only a late round pick ie 5/6/or 7 I'd be ok with the move because it could instantly upgrade the OL.

This is going to be one of those "price tag was too high for Belichick" deals where some other team swaps their fifth round pick for the Eagles sixth. Lol.

We can only pray that Belichick can take advantage of his connection to Chip. They are good friends.

We could do a post June 1st cut in TC (redone contract with Bonus) or zero money loss on a salary only contract. Obviously that would mean he didn't work out. His salary would only become guaranteed in week one of the actual season. It's not much of a big deal to fail on a fifth round pick (which we presently don't have). I don't see a lot of risk here, Connelly would move to RG if resigned. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
