Amendola restructures contract

I don't know why some think this impacts adding more WR's, we could trade for Dez, Demarius, and Calvin and cap space allowing still sign more WR's.

Let's create the biggest competition we can for training camp and the best 5 + Slater win.

I wouldn't hate seeing Edelman, LaFell, Amendola, Harvin, rookie/Dobson/Tyms/Gibson/Player X come September.

The minute you stop trying to upgrade any position is when you've lost.

While somewhat true, tying up resources at one position means you can't allocate that money elsewhere. I'm all for camp battles but if they spend $80 million on twenty receivers that means money not going to other positions. If they bring in Harvin then great, they'd have a million options and he could be used as a Vereen-type hybrid back and not take many snaps away from other guys. Beyond that, however, I think they're largely set at WR.

Love this restructure, and I've come to love Amendola. He needed a reset after 2013, and it took a while for this entire offense to gel last year. I think he found his role late in the year and am happy he'll be back, he's a competitor who battles every down he's out there, can never have too many of those guys.

i love this. he really turned it around late in the year. hes a awesome back up for julian.

3 years $15m for Amendola. STILL TOO EXPENSIVE!

I agree but what can you do. Considering the dead money you already paid him may as well keep him for this amount. He at least knows the system and as we know there is no guarantee if we bring someone else in here that guy will get it. He is making 3.7 this year. I can live with that. By the time year 3 rolls around you need to change it.

Because with LaFell, Edelman and Amendola all on the books for $3+mm and assured a spot, NE isn't going to take on anything more than bargain basement or prove it deals. Prior to this restructure, there was the possibility that Danny could be swapped out for someone else, though I never viewed that as all that likely. NE saves more with this restructure than they would have by cutting Amendola and signing a minimum vet.

Except it's not 3/$15m. It's 3yrs/$12.75m. He can get $15m if he hits all incentives. Which they might be incentives that he isn't able to reach and if he does than the contract was worth it. For example something like 80 catches he makes $750k. Does it for 3 years and that's what gets him to $15m

Amendola offers us not only an experienced WR who knows the system AND has rapport with the QB, but he's invaluable as quality depth in case of injury to Edelman. We had about an 8 game window to see what the Pats saw in Amendola when they first signed him. (that and that first Bills game in 2013).

Edelman took advantage of his opportunity when Danny got hurt and never let go of the job. But unlike Wally Pipp DA has resurfaced and by the end of the season, Josh found a way for Both of them to thrive in formations that had them both on the field at the same time along with LaFell.

These 3 along with Gronk, give Brady 4 productive receivers who can only get better the longer they work together with Tom. Then we still have Dobson, Tyms, and Wright to compete for snaps, depth and offer some size. All together they make up a very solid, if unspectacular, set of receiving options

Amendola had a great postseason. Rewatch that balt game and there are some crucial third downs where he reaches for the first. He really proved himself and was clutch in the playoffs. And he restructured his contract. Hes proved me wrong and I'm glad he's a patriot and wants to be a patriot

For some quantitative context:
Under the current contract, per Miguel, Amendola has $15mm in salary and $1.3mm in bonuses remaining.
So Amendola definitely gave up money.
Further, the 2015 salary of $4mm is probably reduced quite a bit. Some amount may have been converted into signing bonus - good for Patriots by pushing out cap hit; good for Amendola by collecting now and making it harder to cut him.
There may still be the structure of the game-day bonuses, which were about $30K per game.

But unlike Wally Pipp DA has resurfaced and by the end of the season

If Danny had played as well for the past two years as he did down the stretch last year, everyone would be thrilled to have him on board. At a reduced price, no less!

Health is always going to be a question, but it's also why he was disappointing for the first year and a half. Pats fans seriously underestimate how much ability the kid has.

What? He was more than worth it in the playoffs and why would you think he can't continue playing like that?
He started really coming on late in the season. No stone hands like WW in the playoffs either.

I watched it the other day on NFLN. Yep, you're 100% right on that. He fought for every yard.

@DougKyedNESN: No. Still could sign another WR. RT @bub71: @DougKyedNESN Does this mean were not going to target a receiver this off season?

Question for everyone:

Hypothetical:

Edelman
Lafell
Harvin
Amendola

How would we utilize them all to justifying paying each of them 4mil+? (Lafell 3)

Seems like overkill

The question is, which three of them will Revis cover?

The idea that was floated around is that Harvin could be also used in the Vereen 3rd down back role as well as out of the backfield to create mismatches / force opponents into specific sets.

Would have rather just paid Vereen....

3 more years of Brady6 rants to mock and laugh at. Cool.:p

Thank you for explaining incentives to Biffens.
