Amendola restructures contract

Question for everyone:

Hypothetical:

Edelman
Lafell
Harvin
Amendola

How would we utilize them all to justifying paying each of them 4mil+? (Lafell 3)

Seems like overkill

The idea that was floated around is that Harvin could be also used in the Vereen 3rd down back role as well as out of the backfield to create mismatches / force opponents into specific sets.

@DougKyedNESN: No. Still could sign another WR. RT @bub71: @DougKyedNESN Does this mean were not going to target a receiver this off season?

I think it would be smart. What if Edelman goes down for an extended period of time? Also would allow them to rotate and let Edelman take off some snaps because the guy takes a beating throughout the season.

But we don't even know if Harvin will leave Buffalo so it's not like it's a done deal.

Also don't sleep on Brandon Gibson I know it is a meh signing to some but so was LaFell.

Don't forget about Gibson, who has success in Josh's system. And Dobson, who was pretty good in his rookie year.

Was almost ready to give up on him at the beginning of the season and I admit during the first half of the season I did give up on him. But the dude got better and better beginning of the second half of the season. And during the playoffs he came through for us big time. He earned his paycheck on the playoffs alone. Glad he restructured to stay with the team and help the team with cap.

Hopefully he can become next season what many of us hoped he would become when he was first signed. Lafell + Edelman + Gronk + A healthy Amendola that is on the same page as Brady. The receiving corps will be awesome.

Ya added that to my post while you were posting this. Plus it's not like Harvin even is a done deal he may not even leave Buffalo.

And Kevin Dorsey! Lots of thread left in those tires. :p

Does this hurt the teams chances of signing Harvin?

danny wants to stay close to kay adams and i dont blame him

I wonder if they will work on a contract for Solder?

eh I woudn't be expecting it. If anything they are working on Vollmer. Just note who Solder's agent is: Welker and Vereen's agent. Some bad blood there. Although maybe Solder likes being a Patriot and tells his agent "do your job and keep me a Patriot"

I suspect what this boils down to is that if Edelman gets hurt and Amendola is a strong replacement, he gets paid in line with what his contract already says, while in other scenarios it's a significant paycut.

I don't think we can acquire Harvin for less than 5 Mi /year and that seems a little too much for only play like a 3rd down back, on the other hand he is way more talented than Vereen so if signed he should be used more like a versatile tool in BB's toolbox.

As of now it looks like he doesn't have a strong market otherwise he would have signed with some team already , so maybe GM's are pumping the breaks on him.

I imagine this saves around $2M this year putting us about $12M under? Don't quote me on this.

Unless Harvin is looking for top money, no. It actually increased the odds.

Him looking for top money would obviously be a deal breaking regaurdless of anything else. Him for cheap intrigues me.

Ya probably. Miguel has them at $9.9m and that's without the Amendola restructure.

Not much detail. He was scheduled for $16.3 million in new cash money over the next three years (salary + roster bonuses). So, it looks like a cut of a little over a $1 million in a year with incentives to earn another $1 mil a year in incentives.

That's great news for the Pats and puts his deal in line with his production, IMO. Should lower his cap number to a point where it wouldn't make sense to release him (replacement would cost more than the cap savings).

This is the best possible scenario with Amendola's contract, IMO. A win/win for the team and the player. He's a solid guy, plays a useful role on the team, and cutting him wasn't going to be beneficial to the player or the Pats.
