The Most Egregious Case of Tampering Ever

You're all correct. Woody Johnson tampered with Revis' heart:

Mere minutes after signing a contract that guaranteed him $39 million, new (and old) Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis claimed the No. 1 reason he returned to New York was not money, but because he simply wanted to come home. That, and some unfinished business.

“This is where my heart is,” Revis said Wednesday on a conference call. “When I got drafted in 2007, the GM then was Mike Tannenbaum and I told him I would do everything in my power to try to bring a championship to this organization. And I still feel that way.”

Revis’ decision to return to the Jets is just the latest plot twist in the dramatic tale of the cornerback and the team that drafted (and traded and re-signed) him.

“It’s pretty surreal,” he said.

Just a day earlier, the shutdown cornerback had been part of Gang Green’s biggest rival, the New England Patriots. They had declined a $20 million option and didn’t re-sign Revis in time to prevent him from being a free agent. Revis called Bill Belichick a “Hall of Fame coach” but wouldn’t say how close the Patriots were to meeting his financial demands, and instead chose to focus on his return to the Jets, whom he spoke about like an old flame he had just reunited with.

“I just felt like it was a no-brainer to come home,” he said. “And be back home. And make it a marriage.”

Revis, signed a five-year, $70 million deal that guarantees him $33 million in his first two seasons and $39 million total. The team made his annual average $14,024,212 − ending with his jersey number and the New York City area code. And of course the money mattered to Revis, who has always sought to maximize his wealth (he even included a product placement in his contract signing photo).

Revis is still performing at close to his peak, but he will be 30 before next season starts. So after he signed a five-year deal, the question was naturally asked: does Revis think he’ll retire a Jet?

“That would be awesome if that did happen,” he said.

Since the Jets traded Revis before the 2013 season, they have struggled to defend the pass. They were left without any proven cornerbacks on their roster until GM Mike Maccagnan netted them two new ones, Revis and Buster Skrine, on Tuesday. That, and Maccagnan’s other aggressive moves, have everyone wondering how good the Jets will be with their revamped squad.

“Yeah, we can make a lot of noise the next couple of years,” Revis told the team website.

And the Jets may not be done picking up cornerbacks either. The team has been negotiating with Revis’ old counterpart, Antonio Cromartie, and Revis said he would hop on the phone and do some recruiting.

“I am going to get in contact with him hopefully very soon here and try to convince him to hopefully come back and join our Batman and Robin tandem that we had a couple years ago,” Revis said.

Ok, it seems Mevis engineered things all along to go to Jesters for most $$s he could get. At this point, I would be willing to bet that half the tampering info the media got was from Mevis' agent (leaked to stoke the Jesters paying top dollar), as it was from the Jesters front office. But the thing he and YOU are forgetting is that it is a TEAM SPORT. And he plays in isolation on ONE/THIRD of the team (the D). So he takes away 1/6 of the field for 1/3 of the time = 1/18th of the team contribution. Even if he doesnt age-slow quickly being over 30, unchallenged to push himself by the coaches, and afforded every opportunity for distractions by the NY nightlife.... he is still eating up 16M (10% ) of your cap for only 1/18th (5%) of a contribution AT BEST. Let's see how your less-than-median paid LBs can cover all the TEs and slot-wrs that are running thru the spaces Mevis IS NOT COVERING. So his working for a championship is very unlikely to amount to much.

As to the marriage proposal: 1/3 of marriages end in divorce. And last I heard the NFL doesnt do PURCHASES (marriages); they do LEASES. So we'll see around year 3 how that whole marriage thing is working out (can you spell c-a-p c-a-s-u-a-l-t-y).

At the end of the day was all about the $$s. as stated. no disagreement there. He got what he wanted congrats.

As to your earlier-posts comments about this thread being a joke: Yeah it may be a joke to say the 6 and 32 pick should swap; but only because the Go-to-Hell regime is so undeniably Jester-tainted and not a joke from any sense of justice or tampering precedents. I dont think any of the posters who posited or supported the 6 for 32 pick punishment actually EXPECT it to happen. They (and I too) are just the substantial-minority of posters on the board who THINK IT WOULD BE JUSTIFIED. But there are plenty of ranges of opinions on what level of swap is justified. A SWAP of SOMETHING is the CLEAR PRECEDENT and has to happen or the tampering rule is well and truly gone.

Expectation - if Roger-dodger even forces the puke-green to swap 7ths I'll be surprised. I have no expectations of anything from him --- only prayers for an owners meeting vote that fires his azz.

No idea if this is a legitimate document (no idea why someone would write all this for fun): appears to be tampering policy of NFL.

Anyways, thought this might be a decent way to gauge the pats/jets situation.. Sounds like 1st round pick is a little far-fetched and maybe we can expect for something like a "pick swap" in the 3rd/4th and possibly a late round pick. Our maybe just a mid round pick? obviously if found guilty...

I agree with the outrage over this egregious act...

The details of his contract prior to the deadline.. how much do they need to move on this??

The words integrity, Goodell and the NFL shall nevermore be used in the same sentence..

this is the most hilarious thread of all time. Thank you all for making me belly laugh. I'll be sure to come back for more hilarity after it is announced that Woody Johnson will be fined and reprimanded. And, not to pour salt on the Revis wound or anything but don't forget... the Patriots have a $5 million dead money cap hit from Revis in their 2015 financial future. So in an odd way, you still have part of Revis with you.

I'm sorry, I can't hear you. My ears are still ringing from our 4th parade this century.

How has your's been going?

The sun will rise, the sun will set and the Pats will win the AFC East. Revis or not, they have been to 4 straight AFCCGs.

Your annual March Super Bowl win is a great accomplishment. At least it makes it more fun when you actually lose the real games.

Give my best regards to Fireman Ed...... wherever he is. :D

_____________

Neither case comes anywhere CLOSE to this one. This is far more clear cut - let's look at the factual differences:

1) 49ers Cunningham did not specify one player as Woody Johnson did. Also Cunningham wasn't even the HC. He certainly wasn't the owner. Comparing a Defensive Coordinator to an Owner in a tampering case is pretty ridiculous. The owner can pay the contract, not the DC.

2) The 49ers did NOT get Briggs in the end. In fact, Briggs re-signed with the Bears. And their owner did not PUBLICLY state that he wanted him. The Jets DID get Revis and their owner DID publicly state that he wanted him while he was under contract to the Patriots.

This situation is FAR greater than either of those two. It's not even close to being analogous.

No way Roger Jet-dell finds fault with the jets.

...and the clincher is to understand- beyond the press leaks, who and when from the NYJ contacted the Revis camp. Since Revis landed in Nj at 440pm on Tue and the Pats let him go at 4pm, beyond obvious tampering there must be a logical reason for that timeline to be accelerated.

Its sounds like crying over spilt milk but hey...draft picks are draft picks.

Definitely more serious charges, however, is there any precedent to a "revis-like" situation.. I couldn't find any (hence the other two posts). Seems like ole Roger makes up rules as he goes anyways so I guess its not worth spending too much energy on..

Also - Sorry mods - feel free to merge with other topic I scanned the front page and didn't see the other thread!

I wouldn't even go that far. That will only muddy the waters.

What Woody did in a public press conference and what eventually happened is UNPRECEDENTED in the NFL (at least this century).

That, in and of itself, is enough. The "investigation" into it is already in its third month. Putting anymore complexity to it will ensure that Brady/Belichick are retired by time a punishment is decided upon.

Imho, I think you are fine in setting this up as a separate thread.

The analogy to the two previous 49ers situations you listed are being used by many in the media and needs to be put in its proper perspective. The media DOES monitor this website and the hope is that some will see the reasons why this is NOT analogous to those situations that are being bandied about.

[Post edit: Oops, yes I now see the "Most Eggregious Case of Tampering Ever" thread so, I will have to merge 'em. ]

Border war with Whore24.

Revis isn't Lance Briggs, he's a first ballot HOF. caliber player and he just became one of the 3 highest paid defensive players in football.

The tampering was in division, which makes it far more egregious than any other case of tampering.

The owner had already tampered earlier in the year. The owner tampered publicly with Revis and called the Patriots to "apologize" for tampering with Revis.

After the first incident the Jets showed complete disregard for the tampering rules and repeatedly leaked their plans to " blow away" Revis with their offer and leaked the exact details of the offer to their beat writer who then published those details.

This is not comparable to any case of tampering before it and it warrants the most severe sanction in history as the response.

The Patriots should receive the Jets first round pick. No swap necessary.

As far as Revis goes he already choose his punishment, he has to play the rest of his career for a sh.tbag franchise and he retires with one ring.

We've been Double screwed the past 3 months.
Well,we did win the SB. And we were not flagged for PI during Butler's interception

Still waiting for someone to explain how or why this would have come out any differently if "the most egregious case of tampering ever" had not happened and the Jets had just limited themselves to doing what every team does (i.e. take away Johnson's public statement and the leaks to Mehta).

Ivan the big thing that lessened the punishment to SF was that Chicago initiated the trade conversation. They asked SF if they wanted to trade for Briggs, SF contacted Briggs agent to discuss numbers without asking Chicago's permission to. In most cases teams that trade tagged players allow the other team to work a deal beforehand, SF just assumed the Bears understood that. When the bears went to sign briggs long term they found out ant SF and the agent discussed numbers and the agent knew what he was worth on the market.

The most hilarious thing ever is that we won a superbowl paying your best player 12 mil dollars and that you wont even get to one paying him over a 100 mil. Now that is friggen truly hilarious.

Thanks, I didn't realize that, and it makes the distinction even greater.

Don't forget, you guys still have those sweet sweet memories of the Jets hoisting the Lombardi Trophy. In fact the 50th anniversary of that Super Bowl win is only 4 years away.

Congratulations
