The Patriots Couldn't and Shouldn't Match the Jets Offer to Darrelle Revis - READ THIS

Jets are in great cap shape from not doing Revis type deals. So, what do they do? Resign Revis and give him what he wanted 3 years ago. Revis won again and he has laid the blueprint for getting every nickel out of the Jets.

Richardson will be needing a new contract soon. The Pats are about team and the Jets about greed.

That's the best part. When Revis was 25/26 years old in the absolute prime of his career, with the Jets a playoff contender, the team couldn't fathom paying him his asking price of $16M per year. Now that he is turning 30 with a repaired ACL, the team in full-on rebuilding mode, suddenly he is worth that contract again. I'll say it again: this move was made so that Woody Johnson would get his "victory dance" and moment bathing in the tabloid bliss of New York adulation. His way of "beating" Belichick is sad and pathetic.

Good to know that I can ignore Rich Hill's work in the future.

This is what pushed me to the ledge. I would've had a lot easier time accepting the loss of Revis if we still had Browner. I keep having flashbacks to those putrid secondaries post-2009.

I'm more upset about losing Browner in addition to Revis but I guess we'll see.

Browner is gone because Revis is gone. Their primarily man-coverage styles were complementary (although different). Browner's style probably would work only in spot situations considering the likely upcoming scheme change emphasizing zone coverage.

Folks the problem here is the lack of depth in talent when it comes to the dline and the secondary. This team has lack of players in that department and dont give chandler jones. Over the years they have struck out in that department. We are back to the same broken record.
Yeah, damn those repeated playoff runs.

You're not gone, though, are you Tunes? I know I'm not gone. I'm going to every game they play this season, one way or the other. In fact, reading all these surrender monkey, wailing, screaming,"we are doomed now!!!" Revis post mortems, I have never wanted to be MORE of a loyal Patriot fanatic than in the half a century already passed.

So true..we still have a very Steve Young like QB sitting on the bench waiting to take over anytime now...I am not even gonna be surprised to see if they force Brady to retire within the next 2 years or just trade him so we can move on to a younger core on the offense.

I'd rather see them sign G to a cheap extension because Brady is still starting, that way they have him under contract on the cheap if/when he eventually starts. It's win-win, look at how Hoyer, Mallet (and to a lesser extent) Cassel are fairing. Long term he could do much better financially on a better team.

McCourty had a vacation last year playing single high. Back to Cover-2 will make that man earn every single dime.

I don't understand how people can say Revis signed a below-market deal for 2014 @ $12M, and then say that $14M is too much, after the cap increased significantly over last year.

It's not $14 million a year. That includes two fake $11 million years tacked on the end to make the Pats look like they said no to a reasonable deal. The real deal is 3 years, $48 million, with $39 million guaranteed. That's $16 million a year. Thats $2 million a year more than the next highest paid CBs in the NFL (Richard Sherman, etc.)

It's an insane contract.

If Revis had wanted to be the highest paid CB in the NFL playing for the New England Patriots, he would be the highest paid CB in the NFL with the Patriots today. That's not what he chose to do, for reasons that I really don't much care about.

I don't wish any player ill-will, but if the Jets eat his $39 million guaranteed and he suffers a career-ending injury in preseason, I won't be all down in the dumps about it.

but but...the cap is crap remember...

Another very interesting read on what went down with the Revis situation:

Something in that story stuck out to me. It was this comment.

Over the weekend, Gilbert will try to convince the NFL Players Association player reps that he can do for players what he did for his nephew.
If Gilbert is intent on doing what he's done for Revis for all NFL players, good luck. It will be lock out central. Gilbert has been able to guide Revis because he's one of, if not the best at his position. That isn't the case for 99% of players.

its frustrating as a fan… because we suffered through wilhite, butler, ras-i doweling, sterling moore, etc etc etc etc etc…. now we FINALLY had 2 good corners and succeeded…. then we let them both go and we're right back to the drawing board

No one "let go" of anything. The Pats would have had to pay MORE than this because if we were really trying it would have turned into a bidding war. Woody didn't want to lose the Post Back Page praise. Revis wanted to go back to NY. Belichick had to have known this. As I said in another thread, he probably knew it would go like this last year when he originally signed him.

Ever watch Cutthroat Kitchen? You know the people that bid something up just to make the other guy pay more, bit then they go too high and end up "winning" it? Belichick didn't want to "win" Revis (and hamstring the team for his and Brady's last few years) by accident.

Another example: I live near StL and I hate it. I'd move back to the northeast in a heartbeat if it was my choice (military). When I retire next year, my heart is back out that way. If a company in VT or RI offers me $50000 and a company here in StL offers me $70000, I'm still going back to where I want to go. I like it there and less money is worth it to me. Revis wanted to go back home. We'd have had to pay a higher amount to keep him here.

I feel like Browner is a perfect #2 corner in a man-to-man defense because his physicality (often getting beat) requires some safety help. If we ask for more than that (losing Revis and then having Dennard/Arrington/Butler on the other side and needing more safety help)...then it may be a recipe or disaster. I won't mind if lose Browner but just get stronger with better #2-4 CB play. I just pray we don't get a Wheatley, Wilhite, Ras-I redux.

This is what pushed me to the ledge. I would've had a lot easier time accepting the loss of Revis if we still had Browner. I keep having flashbacks to those putrid secondaries post-2009.

There's a theory out there that states once we knew that Revis wasn't going to come back, we backed off of picking up the 2m dollar option with Browner, since he wouldn't fit in due to having to go back to playing zone.

I don't know if it's true or not, but it wouldn't seem as though Browner's 2015 compensation was out of line with the other CBs around the league, so it may be considered.

Exactly. Revis is the 1%

Agreed. Except Revis keeps running his mouth that winning is important. It was last year for him that's why he took less to join the Patriots. But he keeps saying that again in various articles this week. That's bull crap, you didn't go to the jets to win. Don't spew BS.
