I get that people wanted him back, but some of the comments on this board have been ridiculous.
Lets recognize that Revis came to a winner, he did not create a winner.
Since 2001 Bill Belichick is 170-54 in the regular season and 21-8 in the postseason.
Before joining the Patriots Revis had played in 98 regular season NFL games, winning 46, or less than half of them and is 4-2 in the playoffs, for a total non-Patriot record of 50-54.
The Patriots have won without Revis, and Revis has only won with the Patriots.
I loved having him here, but lets be clear, he was a piece of the puzzle, and one that history shows is not irreplaceable in the scope of a team.

He is pretty damn good.

But I do agree with your over all point.

In some ways its like a math problem. Any one of the 53 numbers in the equation can be reduced if you increase others to get the same result.
In this case, on a SB Champ, the contract it would have taken would have cost the Patriots more than double what it cost them last year. That reduces the other 52 pieces at least in some way.
There a thousands of ways to build a championship roster, especially when you start with the GOAT behind center.

Great post. He was the last piece of the puzzle. I wanted him back, but can't blame a guy for getting 40 guaranteed. I just don't want to hear him complain about losing because Geno Smith throws 20 picks

I don't know about last piece of the puzzle. He was a big piece, but the puzzle gets reshaped every year, and the guy reshaping it has done better than anyone Ive ever seen.

wait...I thought you said you threw away your Revis jersey and Mevis was dead to you, Guns? What happened, the resurrection of your green savior and an Easter parade, complete with drunken little Woody rabbits shytting gold pellets bashing Belichick pinatas?

Or Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Patriots will be okay without Revis; it's just that against other playoff teams, it often comes down to having one more or less major impact player. I thought the Patriots had the edge this time around versus other seasons when games were winnable but required getting some breaks along the way.

A huge vital piece to the puzzle. He didn't "create" a winner but he was a big part in the patriots finally being able to close the deal and win another SB after 10 years of getting close and failing. I don't think anybody here is doubting that we will once again be in the mix to go to the SB next year and probably have another 12-4 season. With revis gone tho there is no denying that our chances at a repeat just took a huge hit. With brady gronk and belichick I still give us a shot, but I'm nowhere near as confident as of right now. Before I thought we were the clear cut best in the AFC. Now I think we will just be one of the good teams that has a chance. We will see how it plays out.

Would Revis have helped Welker caught the ball in SB46? He was part of making the Patriots as competitive a team as they were in other years such as 2001, 2003, 2004, 2007, & 2011, yes, but he did not deliver them a Super Bowl.

Revis made McCourty, Browner, Chung, and the dline better. He was the final piece they needed. Either way, we agree In Bill We Trust...

Its funny how everyone thinks now that this revis guy is just another player lol. He along with browner and dmac brung some toughness to this secondary. I already have my pats championship gear and will cherish it cause it could have been our last run with tom terrific.

I said he was a big part of us winning the SB. I didn't say he delivered us a SB. No one player wins a SB. If we have revis in SB46 maybe the defense gets a key stop they didn't get without him. Nobody knows how that would have turned out so its pointless talking about it.

Pats' 2014 regular season record with Revis = 12-4
Pats' 2013 regular season record with Talib = 12-4
Pats 2012 regular season record with 1/2 season of Talib = 12-4
Pats 2011 regular season record with a patchwork secondary = 13-3

I assume there will be life after Revis.

Nevertheless, Revis and Browner together allowed the Pats to do things on defense that we haven't seen in a decade, and I think that was instrumental in our SB run. Without them, a major strength of the team changes considerably. It's too bad, but from a number of reports the cost to re-sign him would have had a huge long-term impact on keeping some of the young talent base. So we move on.

Jets lost their Defensive genius to Bills as I recall and their Offense sucks.......The Bills, who already had a good D, hired Rex as HC and they still need an Offense. Miami shored up their D but still need to find a legit QB...Will Tanny get better? What about Miami's OL? Good, mediocre or bad?

add 2006 if Branch doesn't go postal

Sure, but the point is there's not just one way to craft a Super Bowl contender. We had a terrible secondary in SB46 and up until Malcolm Butler picked off that ball, the season had exactly the same outcome as this year: a lead in the Super Bowl with under a minute, with the opposing team on the goal-line.

We lose Revis, yeah - that sucks. But we get stronger elsewhere and move on.

I am on record saying I still give the patriots a chance to win another one without revis next year. I just think we will need more breaks than before because I don't think we will be as good, that's all.

Did I say that? Sounds about right though.
Honestly I am not excited about having him back, he is a great player it's just the way he handles the business side of things that keeps me from being all in. Not that I blame him for the way he does business.

Good to hear from you Joe.
