There are an aweful lot of in the box strong safeties on that list. I wonder why that might be...

Are you seriously using tackles as a way to say that a single deep safety isn't good?

Yup, because if a game factor can't be neatly wrapped up in a Madden statistic, it doesn't exist.

He's a good/solid player, with a glowing letter of recommendation from the greatest head coach of all time, and there's no other good safeties on the market, therefore his value gets over-inflated.

If McCourty had been a free agent at the same time as guys like Eric Berry or Weddle or the Seattle safety duo, McCourty woulda been the fifth most sought after safety of those five IMHO.

If you really believe that, fine. I would disagree, as would the vast majority.

It was McCourty who stabilized this secondary when he moved to safety. Revis took it over the top, but McCourty's play at safety originally rescued it.

The secondary was stabilized when Talib and Revis arrived. How have people forgotten we were an atrocious secondary with our all pro safety and no top tier corner. There is a reason why corners are compensated more than safeties.

That's incorrect. McCourty moved to safety around the same time that we brought in Talib. Him moving to safety was one of the things that helped us stabilize the secondary.

There's a reason why we just paid Devin McCourty what we did. Revis & Talib improved the defense tremendously, obviously, but you are severely underestimating McCourty's impact.

I do. I do believe he is a good safety, lol

It is rich how all of the Patriots' best defensive players were merely good, solid players when they were re-signed.

And yet there are much fewer high-quality safeties than high-quality cornerbacks in the NFL.

All I know is that CB shot up my list of priorities for this year's draft. I would seriously think about Byron Jones now. He,has the upside to turn into an Elite corner with the right coaching.

I think Marcus Peters could become the steal of the draft. I could very easily see him being a legit CB1 in the NFL. He ran a slowish 40 at the combine, and if he doesn't fix that at his pro day there's a really good chance he'll be available at 32. If his dismissing from Washington is a big enough red flag, I could even see him dropping to 64 potentially, at which point he's an absolute no-brainer.

CB in the draft is interesting now, because as we've seen there always seems to be one position that the Patriots double down on. Ridley/Vereen, Jones/Hightower, Wheatley/Wilhite (ugh), Cunningham/Spikes, Gronk/Hernandez, etc. I think until now I've assumed it would be either OL or DL, but perhaps Stork/Flemming/Halapio was our OL double dip last year, and CB could be it this year. Hopefully with better results than Wheatley/Wilhite...

So how can you say he is an "elite" FS? He is barley in the top ten in any category! So if you are not in the top five in tackles, sacks, passes defended, interceptions, fumbles forced, and fumbles recovered, what exactly are you basing your evaluation on?
You do realize that when a cover guy does his job perfectly he achieves no stat right? Covering your receiver so the QB considers him not open does not produce statistics.
Allowing your receiver to be open so they can catch a pass and then you tackle them does.

Great more secondary selections in the draft. If they are going to do thst then beef up the dline now.

I don't know what went on with Browner if he wanted more money or BB just felt
that without Revis they just really cant play as much man coverage, but I take
McCourty over Revis every time. revis locks down one side and most NFL teams
have two and three good WR's so just don't throw his way like the pats did vs
Sherman, but a Elite FS over top helps all the DB,

you don't add a top paid defensive player to a group of first and 2th round picks just to be a middle of the pack defense cause thats what they were last year. the pats went 16-0 with Ellis Hobbs and James Sanders starting at DB and the defense was ranked 4th over all because they had a great front 7. if the pats can add some more talent upfront they will be a better defense in 2015 without Revis

McCourty is not a high quality safety ; he is a solid ok player.Low Supply and High demand is what drove his price up because intrinsically he is not worth what he got.

I would be very happy if the Patriots' safety was last in the league in tackles.

These chicken littles have no common sense and are absolutely pathetic.
