Darrelle Revis Appreciation Thread

Hate to be maudlin, but it's going to be lonely counting that 100 plus million stack he'll end up with, watching other teams celebrate playoff and super bowl wins.

I have nothing against the guy, but I won't shed a tear. Big Vince is another story.

Mahalo brah. You're a hell of a businessman.

I'm with the masses, once a mercenary always a mercenary. He is what he is.

Just glad we won the SB so signing him worked out. Guess winning isn't THAT important to him, though.

He got both. He came for a discount to win a Superbowl that's done, bad to money.

I wish him no ill will.

The whole narrative about 'playing the Patriots at their own game' is a total strawman.

Revis is simply looking to make the most money possible - the Patriots are trying to construct a roster, under a salary cap restriction that limits how much they can pay individuals and still produce a consistent winner.

Revis is going to play out his career on a loser team - he won't sniff the playoffs again while in a Jesters jersey - but he'll have made some extra money doing just that.

Another thought; Revis was extremely good at maximising his considerable talent with huge amounts of film study - but it wasn't just about being the best - it was about being the best because that how you make the most money.

Now that he has the next 2 years fully guaranteed on a team that is unlikely to break 8 wins any time soon - what are the odds we see his considerable work ethic disappear? What is there to market any more?

When Revis tweets, "New York, I am coming home"... the odds were stacked against the Pats, and have to wonder how much of a chance we really had..

He got his ring, and now he gets the cash...

I appreciate his play for this team and his efforts to bring a 4th Lombardi back to Foxboro...

From a 4-win quarterback to a 4-win team, with a check for $40 million dollars in one hand and a Super Bowl ring on the other, Revis made out from his one-year deal. Playing for the Jets and living in NYC is a dream because he can expect to play three fewer games per year.

The Patriots also made out as Super Bowl champions while watching the Jets go in disarray. Jets fans who previously purchased a Revis jersey, also won out. TV networks win out because they will reuse the Super Bowl celebration footage not just for Patriots games, but also Jets games, too (Could there be a Sunday Night Jets game in 2015? NBC might have to remind Jets fans in 2016, instead.)

The Jets are the actual losers. The way they timed the release of Revis, and got Revis back, was in the worst way imaginable, leading one team to a 4-win season, mass-firings, investigation into tampering, and a $40 million fee, and another to Super Bowl Victory #4 for the owner, head coach, and quarterback, and much needed cap-space.

He won't even be able to wear his Super Bowl ring for another 5 years. There is no way the jets/fans could stomache him parading a flying elvis ring while being the Jets star player!

Don't forget about his lineage. His uncle, Sean Gilbert, is a former player and current NFLPA Executive. Revis considers it his duty to take the most money he can. I don't blame him at all. He'll never be Bruschi, Brady, Wilfork, etc. But he deserves a standing ovation the next time we see him - before we go back to calling him a bum and laughing when he pretends to pull a hammy after getting torched by Harvin.

How many people here have stayed at a lower paying and more demanding job because they like the output better?

Thanks Revis, and BTW Brady's record against the Jets speaks for itself...see you in September son...:D

I meant going forward. Sure, he could win another SB but the odds were far greater in NE.

Bottom line was Broncos were loadin up for a SB Run after gettin Blown Out by 'Hawks. They signed Talib so as soon as Revis was released by TB, BB jumped all over it with Browner. Revis wanted back to NY but Jets declined so he came to us. He never wanted to leave Jets and BB probably knew it was like a One Year Rental with that contract and tried a Contract Extension but Revis's heart was still in NY especially Woody Tampering with Jets could have signed Revis knowing what Pats gave him and throwin IzDick under bus.

This is a business we cut players for value reasons, players sign where it makes the most sense for them and their limited shelf life.

I don't hate BB for cutting VW, trading Mankins, Seymour ect, I don't resent Revis, Welker for the same reason.

Well said @Ice_Ice_Brady

Money well spent.

No one should be surprised he left for more money after increasing his value once again.

And also no one should be surprised by the petty reaction by a lot of posters.

I don't consider myself ungrateful, short-sighted or petty, thank you very much. I would like to say thanks to Revis for helping us get our 4th ring. Now I wish him in his return "home": diminishing skills, total chaos, a bad scheme for his skill set, inability to work with a rookie coach and mediocre teammates who don't make him look as good as the Pats made him look. Good luck Darrelle!

The reaction is somewhat ridiculous. Revis owes nothing to the Patriots. If the Patriots are not willing to pay top guaranteed money for the position they are not going to get a guy like Revis.

It was a deal that worked for both parties.

The Pats got Revis at a discount and Revis re-established his value so he could get his big payday. The Pats got their fourth Lombardi and he got his contract.

Now, both move on to uncertain futures.

Will the Pats be able to get off the field on third down as consistently and effectively as they did last year? We don't know the answer to that question, but we do know it won't be easier.

Will Revis return the Jets to "relevance" (which seems to be today's NY Tabloids' buzzword to describe what has happened) or a Championship? Well, the Jets are a different and probably much better team than they were two months ago, but they still don't have an NFL QB and will be playing under an unproven, rookie HC. So, they might be more "relevant" but I think any "Championship" dreams are two or three season scenarios...which coincides with the guaranteed money in Revis' contract.

Bottom line? I'm disappointed to have lost Revis, but I'd still rather be the Pats than the Jets this morning.

This is a much better thread than the others about Revis. We all know what Revis is - he is a hired mercenary that goes to the highest $. I don't begrudge him that. His year with the Patriots was win-win for both sides - he was a key player to the Patriots winning another Super Bowl and he got to reestablish his value after that debacle in Tampa Bay. I am 100% thankful for Revis for being a Patriot for 1 season. He is an all-time great at CB and without him the Patriots probably don't win the SB.

He was smart and used the Jets. Essentially the Jets are giving him $39M for the next two years because Revis will hold-out after two years for another new contract. Its what he is and what he does and when he does it (again), it shouldn't surprise anyone because he isn't playing for $11M in a few years. Good for him - almost $20M/year is a high price to pay and the Jets paid out of their nose.

Now the question should be what is the penalty the Jets should pay for tampering with Revis, because its like their owner opened up the rule book and repeated exactly the example provided in the rules as tampering. What the Jets did was essentially what the Belichick did with the taping - they knew the rules and they arrogantly flicked a booger at the league and did it anyways. Not saying the penalty should be the same, but the league has to come down hard on the Jets. If not, they just opened the door for every team to legally tamper with any player that has an option year left on their contract. Imagine JJ Watt has one more player option year left and Belichick publicly made comments like "I would love Watt to be on the Patriots. If I knew that $ was what he was looking for, we would have given it to him." If the League doesn't make an example of the Jets and make teams pause before doing the same thing the future, the league just became a free-for-all.
