Revis Signs with NYJ

There are only so many quality free agents out there and teams looking to trade away pieces are doing it now.

Worst part is, Revis screwed us out of getting a replacement at CB or DLine, by waiting so long. I cannot blame a man for taking the bigger paycheck, but call it what it is. Revis is a mercenary, and is never happy. Money doesn't buy happiness over 6-10 seasons, while watching Geno Smith throw 20 picks a year. GL to Revis Island, he helped us get a ring, but now, I can't wait for Jules to abuse him :)

It's a bit of a bummer, for sure.

All that said, investing, let's hypothetically say, 10 million in Revis this season wouldn't be wise, and that'd be the bear minimum in order to bring him back here given the guarantees he wants. We'd have just under 6 million in cap space after that, and you have to set aside 4'ish million for the rookie reserve. That leaves us with virtually no spending money.

Revis got his and we stuck to the formula. I'm fine with this, albeit a bit sad about the situation.

All that said, I'm slightly surprised by the Browner situation and can only hope that he'll be returning here. I still think he has a role and can help. The idea of Browner, Butler and Ryan, with Arrington in the slot isn't all that bad, especially given McCourty over the top.

On a related note, I'm a bit nervous about Chung. The reason he thrived this season was because he played exclusively in man-to-man against TEs and short/shallow zones in the flat and over the middle (as well as in the box as a run defender). He never had a responsibility with a deep zone. What does his role become if we begin to play more zone coverage, particularly cover-2? Is it possible that we'll look to replace him with a more well-rounded SS? All questions to be answered. Will he revert back to 'meh' form?

A CB who intrigues me is Tramon Williams. He's quite good and could fit in nicely here. Has the versatility to play man or zone. If we could manage to snag Williams (or someone similar) and/or bring Browner back, coupled with the drafting of a promising CB in the draft, we should be fine. That's assuming, of course, that we add some firepower up front. Sheard would be a start, and Knighton would be huge. We shall see.

Ultimately, it's a sad day but not a devastating nor unexpected day. The Patriots made the correct decision(s) (save for the Browner move, in my opinion). We opted for the younger, cheaper, and more versatile/athletic option (McCourty) over the pricier, older option in Revis. I'd also argue that McCourty is more of a leader and appears happier to be here, for whatever that's worth. While it's sad and disappointing, I'm confident that our team made the correct moves given the circumstances. It's time to move forward and build the team, brick by brick.

He didn't screw anyone out of getting a replacement and certainly not the Patriots. If BB & Co. had a replacement in mind they would have pulled the trigger on it the moment FA opened and let Revis go. Also as many have stated in various threads, the timing of when it was leaked that Browner can look for his value combined with more recent reports that Patriots were done with negotiations with Revis on Monday tells you that there would have been enough time to go to plan B.

All in all it suggests that plan B is not replacing Revis but changing our defensive scheme.

I am wondering the same thing. When they gave him an early contract extension I assume that it was because they identified a good fit for him in whatever scheme we will be running as plan B to Revis/Browner. I would be shocked if Revis leaving was not an anticipated scenario back then.

SO I guess this pretty much locks up who the opening night opponent will be? Don't see how any network could turn down this drama.

Where do you draw the line? That's a good question, and I'd imagine that every coach and GM would be at least a little flexible about it, which makes it even more difficult to answer. Since I wasn't talking about Revis' money, but about the behavior pattern of the ostriches, though, I'll leave it for another time.

Manish Mehta reported: Breakdown of Revis contract: $16M FULLY gtd, $17M fully guaranteed, $15M ($6M fully gtd), $11M, $11M . That's the line.

Funny, but I agree with the Patriots on this. The first two years are more than 11% of the cap, the third probably right at 10% of the cap - all guaranteed. That kind of money is too great an investment in one player, let alone one position group.

My view is that the Suh contract in Miami and the Revis contract in NY are the big first step to cap Hell for both of these teams. Great players, but lack of quality elsewhere will be readily apparent.

With Browner and Revis gone, one thing I am going to do is talk to my cardiologist about what medications might be available to help me survive 2011 all over again.

I am ok with it, I really am.

Revis is, and always will be, all about the money...hopefully for their sake he stays healthy.

Now lets go out and build another championship caliber team.

Challenge accepted....!

There is a small handful of players nearly every offseason in the NFL who can pretty much demand the top of what the market will bear in terms of compensation, even if it's an amount and on terms that won't make sense for most teams. Revis is one of those players.

All it takes is one owner who, for whatever reasons, is willing to pay it. It's usually Dan Snyder or someone else, but in this case it was Woody Johnson, desperate to appease the media, his fan base and his PSL buyers after the Mangini/Tannenbaum/Ryan/Sanchez/Idiotzik/Geno Smith era.

Not all players in that position opt for getting all they can get. Revis did. It's a disappointment for us, but he had every right to go that route. More power to him.

The Jets still don't have an NFL QB and they are working with an untested, rookie HC. This basically buys Johnson a transition year when fans will accept an 8--8 season. It also quiets the rumblings that were beginning on the blogs and in the media that maybe Johnson should sell the team. From that perspective, it's a lot smarter than some of Dan Snyder's moves.

This team took a step back tonight no matter what the kool aid drinkers tell u. These afc teams got better defensively and some offensively. I will wait to see what happens but once again the secondary is a weaknesss. Bill has been trying to fix it for years before talib and mevis.
What happened to "I will wait to see what happens?"

What is scary about all this is now the pats defense is behind the Jets, bills and dolphins.

Pats just let Browner and Revis walk so what's the back up plan? There are no good corners out there to sign. Is BB just going to draft a bunch of rookies so we can go back to the days of 2010 or 2011 where every scrub Qb throws for 500 yards? Or maybe we are relying on Brady, who will be 38 next season, to bail this team out every game?

Well this is disappointing, but I have to say, since we won the SB, I don't have this burning anger and upset about this whole thing like I would have in the past. I guess I am just getting complacent. Of course, this morning I am getting worried about our back field. Not looking forward to the returning to the days of 3rd & long - long completion. Sigh. I hope BB has a back-up plan.

Tramon Williams is a fine CB, but he's almost 32. He has had 28 ints in his career and is very underrated.

I'm sure Belichick has a plan.

They already have proof. Woody was caught red handed with his hand in the cookie jar. I'd be happy with a 3rd round swap and a 6th round pick. The rule clearly states SEVERE punishment. Tired of Goodell letting the Jets off the hook again and again and again. I didn't buy into this whole thing Joker was spewing years ago but it's really come to light. He was right all along.

When I first came here a couple of years ago I noticed Joker's stance on Goody and the Jets. It was the same stance as mine, only I didn't have documented proof like he did.

So true. Pat P in AZ is so over rated it hurts.

Just have no idea how we get a secondary that is believable by season start. Oh well, we won the big one, guess it's time to move on. Wonder what Brady thinks of this?

As one of the Michigan counselors mentioned in an interview during one of the Brady videos, he has a strong respect for authority. That's another thing that separates Brady from most NFL QBs.

I'm sure Belichick has a plan.
Agreed. Even if he didn't have one at 4:00 p.m. yesterday, he's formulating one as we type. The fact that they let Browner go a few days earlier tells me they've known for a few days at least that they weren't getting Revis back.

Zero.

Arrington, ryan, Denard, Mccourty, Chung.

That's your secondary core. That core has been burned a hundred times.

Why do people keep forgetting about Malcom Butler? That's sinful.

What gets me is that the pats supposedly gave up on Revis on Monday yet just let Browner walk. Pats have 2nd and 3rd corners as #1 corners. Which corners are going to cover Marshall and Watkins?
