Patriots allow Brandon Browner to explore value around the NFL

My hope (as it has been since we started discussing 2015) is that Browner is extended. The trial period is over. Browner passed his test with high marks. Now is the time to extend his contract. BTW, this will likely free up a bit of cap money.

Make it so, Number 1.

Cary Williams' deal with Seattle is reportedly for 3 years / $18M:

That's a reasonable comp for Browner.
...and if Browner wants those same terms here he is gone. He'll be 31 at the start of camp this year. Not exactly young.

Browner's market is narrower than I think people realize. We all loved the guy's aggressiveness, attitude and physical style he brought to the defense but the trade off were penalties and a high-amount of completions against him. For some teams, that's ok. For others, that's unacceptable.

Please dont cut Browner. Extend him for more 2 years.
But im guessing that they will tradet him if we resign Revis. But if we dont he will be extended. They dont need the money but looking ahead they probably want to save some money for Hightower, Collins and Jones.
Browner is a legitimate CB #2, with a excellent contract AND NO MONEY gtd. So, IMO its not Mallets case. We have a two time proven champion with a great contract and we should look at least for a #4 and swap the #3s.

None of this Browner story makes any sense to me. What am I missing?

Browner makes 4.8 this year and next, but NONE of it is guaranteed. In other words, the Pats can cut him with no dead money penalty.

The Pats have to spend a ton of cash this year to get up to the 89% number required.

So they probably asked Browner to redo the deal to include guarantee money and probably tag on 1 year to spread the cap pain. More security for him, cap relief for the Pats.

If I'm Browner's agent at that point, given some of the deals floating around, I then ask the Pats for permission to look around and see what that's worth to us. The Pats agree.

The other possibility is that the Pats intend to TRADE him (his contract is quite valuable right now) and are giving him the chance to look around to see what he can drum up that would suit him. If that's the case, and I don't think it is, then I have to believe that the Pats intend to trade/cut contingent on a Revis deal being done.

They're not losing their #1 and #2 corners, certainly.

Not sure if it's been mentioned in this thread, but Reiss was on ESPN and said we could've let Browner test FA because if we don't sign Revis, then we're not gonna play as much press man, which is what Browner does.

So that doesn't sound very good to me.

I recall when Bryan Cox came to the team. His overall contribution was not tangible...but he brought a swagger and attitude to the D it never had. Browner reintroduced a lot of that swagger to the team...plus was a HUGE contributor.

Gonna miss that dude bad if he leaves.

so will i...a solid number 2 corner on the cheap compared to what other cb's are getting.
cary williams got 8m a year. lmao browner makes half.

As I said in another thread, it would be a HUGE loss. He brings a lot more to the team than just his skills as a corner.

I won't be pleased- I think he might have a very strong season, with a second year under the belt here, and his numbers are very reasonable. If NE really needs cap space, I'd just as soon as squeeze Dennard off the roster and work out something with Arrington.

I will be more upset if Browner leaves than if Revis does. Browner is a good value and brings a swagger with him. Revis is great but he is also extremely expensive and on a team that has many good corners waiting in the wings. I'd rather they use his crazy money to sign a real pass rusher and dominate on the line. We have a good backfield with or without Revis

Just as upset as Revis leaving? If I had a Sophie's Choice moment between Revis and Browner, I wouldn't have to think more than 0.0000000000000000001 seconds to make that decision. Browner would be gone in that scenario.

If the Pats have to cut Browner to keep Revis, bye Brandon.

And you can't say cut Amendola instead. Cutting Amendola gives you $1.6 million of cap space and cutting Browner gives you $4.8 million.

I hope that Browner renegotiates his deal, but if he is let go it is because they needed his cap space for Revis. I can live with that.

Are you serious? Revis is a HOF player. Browner is an above average CB. Yes, I like him and his physical presence but Browner doesn't bring nearly as much to the defense as Revis does.

And many good corners waiting? Like who? Do you not recall what their defense looked like in 2013?

Cutting Dennard would only save the team about a million. Redoing Arrington wouldn't make up the other $3.8 million. And those two moves could be in the Pats' plans even if they plan to let Browner go.
