Patriots allow Brandon Browner to explore value around the NFL

This is what we need. There is only 1 football to go around. Last year Edelman, Gronk, Lafell, Wright, Amendola and Vereen accounted for 97% of the receptions last year. Only that last name is a FA, and that was 52 catches out of the backfield.

I've stated this before: Brady is not going to throw it 800 times for 6,000 yards. That entire, intact receiving core is in place at a reasonable price. Should we let Amendola you might as well add 1.2 to the salary the replacement signs for this year and 2.4 to next years, because that's the dead money hit. That, and now we need a KR and backup PR guy as well, so you need another player because A. Johnson ain't fieldin' no damn kickoffs or punts.

Unfortunately we can't get everything we want.

I agree, I'd prefer the defense continue to have pieces added, but I'm not confident Amendola is a Patriot in 2015 (though it would certainly be best for him, IMO), so we'd need to add something, it's hard to count on the 2013 rookie class at this point.

The annoying this is that we all have begged for pash rush depth forever, we finally had a form of it this season, and once our #1 guy was healthy he went back to playing 100% of the snaps with Ayers playing LB sparingly, hardly ever at the same time as Jones.

If we get another pass rusher will he even play? It's like we don't believe in rotating.

so...we should know browners fate by 3 pm??

I said this could happen and people got mad at me.

I don't like the thought of losing Browner one bit. The defense took on a whole new swagger right about the time he came on in week 6 last season. He shut down Chris Matthews in the SB after he begged to be put on him and set up the key pick for Malcolm Butler to blow up the play and intercept the ball to win a super bowl. I know he is no Revis, but I personally feel he is a big phucking part of the defense, let alone the secondary.

Damnnit. Browner is almost as important as Revis.

The attitude and leadership he brings is huge for our team.

Browner is a solid number 2 corner

I agree. I did find that perplexing given the success that Ayers had right out of the gate. Finding a way to keep Branch would be a positive IMO as well. And I can only assume with BB's higher emphasis than most on ST's they find a way to bring Casillas back in the fold.

could just be to convert the roster bonus into a signing bonus.......that would save the pats 1.5M without spending a dime

I had suggested that kind of restructuring 2 months ago. It makes some sense.

Browner is quite good and has a skill set unlike the rest of our corners. But he is a #2 corner and not a #1 lock down corner. The importance is significantly greater with Revis.

He's limited in what he can do. It's definitely preferable to get everyone, but if it came down to "we can only keep 2 of McCourty, Revis, Browner", then Browner is clearly the guy that goes even if he costs a third-to-half as much as the other guys. McCourty and Revis are what make it possible to disguise the major flaws in his game, so if either of them go his value plummets.

Keep in mind, we've only seen him perform in the NFL in secondaries with an elite CB1 and an elite FS. Without that, I'm betting that he's a huge liability downfield. I'd rather we let some other team take that gamble, and pay us a draft pick for the privilege. If Byron Maxwell is worth the contract that he just got, then Browner on his contract has trade value.

I agree somewhat with what your saying but two points.. We cut amendola before we get rid of browner. Second browner is a big body which we desperately need in our secondary. The seawhawks showed that if a team is willing to play jump ball with a big receiver we dont have many answers.

Hopefully he stays; I think Browner can only be better next year, having a complete season in the defense. Obviously if it's between Revis and him though, you have to go Revis.

Curran's got it figured out. With a $4.8 million one year deal and no dead money, Browner could be an attractive trade target.

Or, they could really just want to do a longer term extension and need to help the player assess his market value.

IDK. most teams will just wait until the deadline for the bonus and see if the Pats cut him. If the Pats were to trade him, they should have started to shop him earlier.

FWIW, I'm still mad at you.
I think it's a horrible idea. I just thought the team would consider it because they think they can replace anybody.

I think Browner is incredibly overrated here. He's a pretty limited CB that needs a great supporting cast to be good. He's kind of like Arrington but they are good at the opposite thing. Arrington is very good against quick guys, but sucks against big guys. Browner sucks against quick guys, but is good against big guys. Both of them are chess pieces that really needs a very good supporting cast around them that can take over the things they suck at, and let them only do the things they are good at. None of them is a guy you can have as your best corner as they both would be very exposed when they can't just be locked down to do the task that they are very good at.

Which is exactly why most people want Browner to stay. Remember the SB? Some guy who never caught a pass in his career was killing Arrington and then Browner shut him down.
