Patriots allow Brandon Browner to explore value around the NFL

Why on earth would we not pick up an option for 4.8 mil on a guy who is worth 7-8 mil on the open market. Browners contact was a steal. This is just lazy fricken reporting. This guy is a true number 2 corner and would be a 1 on a crap team like the jets.
Just conjecture, but is it possible that Browner has expressed some discontent with the possibility of the Patriots picking up his option and that's why the Patriots are willing to let him explore his options. Rather have a happy Revis on a new contract than figure out how to keep Revis and Browner if Browner is unhappy. This is total conjecture...

Curran's got it figured out. With a $4.8 million one year deal and no dead money, Browner could be an attractive trade target.

Or, they could really just want to do a longer term extension and need to help the player assess his market value.

If that's so, he should have pretty good trade value, no?

That's what I'm thinking. Cutting him would be wasteful, even if ultimately the Pats decide to go with one CB less than last season.

Whittling down the CBs to less than Revis/Browner/Arrington/Butler/Ryan/Dennard isn't crazy. But Browner does seem like an asset.

The only thing that makes sense is a trade. I wouldn't support it at all but it makes far more sense than trying to squeeze him.

I like browner, why would we get rid of him? He's a great cb

To free up the money for Revis. I love what Browner brings to this team but the price for keeping Revis and McCourty is to trade Browner or release him then so be it.

I'll be pretty disappointed if they don't pick up the option but I guess I could live with it if it is the difference between signing Revis or not. After seeing what Maxwell/Flowers are reportedly getting, 4.8m sounds like great value for Browner. He brings a toughness and physicality that the defense needs so hopefully they can work something out and keep him around.

We're obviously not inside the walls, but Mayo and Amendola seem like much easier decisions to bang out than cutting or trading Browner, who was a much more significant contributor on a bargain bin deal for the team, who has show no outward signs of discontent that he would need to be moved for.

Mayo needs to pass his physical! Or Amendola gets released as post June 1st. I don't want Browner gone. This secondary is in need of that physical presence he perfectly provided last year. How can anyone forget this:

I don't want to read too much into this, but this does kind of seem like a "we need cap room now because we're picking up a $20M option" move.
That's what bothers me about deals like with Revis. You have to subtract to add.

We can't do anything with May until he's healthy. Miguel tweeted no restructure until then as any new contract requires the player's signature that he is healthy enough to play football. And we already know his contract is basically uncuttable due to injury.

Was unaware that he could not restructure until healthy, makes more sense now why we haven't heard from him.
